Charles Dickens (1812-1870)
Charles Dickens is one of England’s most famous novelists. He described life in the middle of the 19th century, a period that is now called Victorian, as it is when Queen Victoria ruled Britain. Many of Dickens’ novels take place in London.
His popular works are: David Copperfield, Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, and Our Mutual Friend.
Dickens’ works
David Copperfield goes from a happy home until his mother marries again. He’s sent to school. When his mother dies, he runs away to his aunt, who sends him to another. He makes more friends and falls in love, but hard times goes. His aunt and his friends lose their money to a fraud (诈骗). His nanny Peggotty’s family, whom David has loved, is also in trouble. David’s wife dies as well. In the end, everything is resolved. The money is returned; Peggotty’s family sets out on a new adventure; David remarries, to his friend Agnes, and begins his new career as a writer.
It’s Dickens’s most popular novels and was his own “favorite child.” The work is semiautobiographical, Dickens related early personal experiences that had meant much to him—his work in a factory, his schooling and reading, and his emergence from parliamentary (议会的) reporting into successful novel writing.
Oliver Twist is about a boy named Oliver Twist, who escapes from an orphanage (孤儿院) and meets a gang of pickpockets (扒手) in London. The novel is one of Dickens’s most well-known works, and has been the subject of numerous film and television adaptations (改编).
Have you read these two books
Read the excerpts below from two famous works of literature and discuss the following questions in pairs.
Classics can stand the test of time.
My meaning simply is, that whatever I have tried to do in life, I have tried with all my heart to do well; that whatever I have devoted myself to, I have devoted myself to completely; that in great aims and in small, I have always been
thoroughly in earnest.
—David Copperfield,
by Charles Dickens
adj. 非常认真的;真诚的
致力,专心,献身
You can never have too much sky. You can fall asleep and wake up drunk on sky, and sky can keep you safe when you are sad. Here there is too much sadness and not enough sky. Butterflies too are few and so are flowers and most things that are beautiful. Still, we take what we can get and make the best of it.
—The House on Mango Street,
by Sandra Cisneros,
n. 蝴蝶
What message is conveyed in the two excerpts
The excerpt from David Copperfield shows the main character’s passion for whatever he is doing.
The other excerpt from The House on Mango Street introduces the concept of making full use of what we have now.
Which of the excerpts makes you feel like reading the whole book Why
The second excerpt makes me feel like reading the whole book because I think the language the author uses is simple but beautiful. I particularly like her description of the sky keeping us safe when we are sad.
What is your favorite work of literature Why
born February 7, 1812, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England—died June 9, 1870, Gad’s Hill, near Chatham, Kent, English novelist, generally considered the greatest of the Victorian era. His popular works are: A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, and Our Mutual Friend.
Of the many works of literature I have read, my favorite is The Gadfly by the Irish writer Ethel Voynich. The story takes place during a revolution in Italy in the 19th century. Through a series of exciting events, the hero, Arthur Burton, comes to terms with his identity and becomes a true revolutionary. This book is an amazing coming-of-age story that moved me deeply, and I would recommend it to anyone.
What is the importance of literature and its impact on society
“Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become.”
—C.S. Lewis, British scholar and novelist
Why should we read
Reading literature exercises the imagination.
Reading literature transports us out of our current context and into other ages and places.
Reading literature enables us to see the world through the eyes of others.
Reading literature helps us to know ourselves—in short, to understand man.
Mind map of Literature
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.
—— Charles Dickens
