Beijing normally doesn’t have much snow in winter, so artificial snow was used at venues (场地) for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.
“This is by far the best man-made snow I’ve ever skied on,” American freestyle skier Ashley Caldwell said at a press conference.
Although sometimes mixed with natural snow, artificial snow has mostly been used in competitions in the past five to 10 years.
Snow-making machines were first used at the Lake Placid 1980 Winter Olympics in the United States. At Sochi 2014 in Russia, 80 percent of the snow was artificial, and the figure was 90 percent at Pyeongchang 2018 in South Korea.
Cooled water and compressed (压缩的) air are mixed in the machine and shot out into water droplets (水滴). With the help of low temperatures, these droplets will become ice crystals.
There are totally nine types of snow made by snow machines, with different water content. The smaller type number is closer to powder snow. The larger number means the snow is wetter. Drier snow is used in the daytime, while No. 7 or No. 8 snow is used during the nighttime with over minus 20 degrees Celsius. Different types of snow are chosen for different sports.
“In most cases, No. 5 snow is used,” revealed Wei Qinghua, mountain operation manager of the Zhangjiakou Guyangshu venues for Beijing 2022.
However, there are concerns regarding the environmental problems of using so much water for snow-making.
“Water used for snow-making only comes from rainfall and surface runoff (径流), and it can be recycled,” Wei pointed out.
“For water from melted snow, we have two lakes which can store it so that it can be used for agriculture, irrigation, tourism and landscaping.”

A.It is still not as good as natural snow.
B.It is made of water and ice mixed in machines.
C.It falls into eight types depending on water content.
D.It has been widely used in the Olympic Winter Games.
3.What kind of snow is used in the night
A.Natural snow. B.No. 3 snow.
C.Drier snow. D.Wetter snow.
4.How do they prevent affecting the environment according to Wei Qinghua
A.Water from melted snow is collected and reused.
B.Natural snow is made use of as much as possible.
C.Underground water is pumped up for use.
D.Snow-making is made more energy efficient.

The concepts of green Games and sustainability have been embedded(嵌入)in the entire process of preparing for and delivering the Beijing Winter Olympics, Li Sen, an official from the organizing committee stressed on Wednesday.
China plans to peak its carbon emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality(碳中和)before 2060. At Beijing 2022, the country is translating those promises into concrete actions. Beijing made hosting carbon-neutral Games a key component of its bid(努力) for the 2022 Winter Olympics, Li said, adding that it has fulfilled this promise in terms of venues(场馆), energy, transportation and even administrative work.
Six venues used for the 2008 Summer Olympics have been transformed for use at the 2022 Winter Games, including the Water Cube—also called the "Ice Cube" for the duration of Beijing 2022—the Capital Indoor Stadium and Wukesong Arena. “Reusing the old venues has reduced carbon emissions compared to the alternative of building new ones,” Li added.
As for ecological conservation, he said organizers have put resource saving and environmental friendliness in the first place. “We have implemented integrated(整体的) plans for ecological conservation to protect the mountains and rivers,” Li said.
When mentioning the Yanqing competition zone, Li said that organizers carried out environmental impact assessment work before the Games and integrated sustainability into the planning and construction of the venues, including the protections of plants. “We relocated those plants in the construction area to nearby spots or other conservation areas where they are carefully tended to and are growing well,” Li said.
Beijing 2022’s sustainability plans have gained praise from the International Olympic Committee. “In the time of Beijing 2008 and Beijing 2022, the commitment to sustainability has advanced remarkably, both in sport and in Beijing ,” said Marie Sallois, IOC director of corporate and sustainable development.

In May 2020, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (BOCOG) solicited medal designs worldwide. Hang Hai and his team set about preparing designs to submit to the BOCOG.
Medals reflect the culture and creativity of the host country, and the team set two basic principles for their design: First, it should continue to adopt the jade (玉) culture incorporated into the design of the Beijing 2008 medals to highlight Beijing’s status as the world’s first city to host both the Summer and Winter Games; second, it should be innovative.
“The medals of both the Beijing 2008 and 2022 Games are to honor the athletes and the Olympic spirit with traditional jade culture,” said Hang. Jade was chosen because it has been treasured in China and symbolizes good virtue. “The difference is that the 2008 medals used the jade as a material, while the 2022 medals represent the spirit of China’s jade culture,” he added.
In the process of designing the medals, one team member, Lin Fan, conducted extensive research into China’s ancient bi. Lin finally chose a five-ring one associated with Fu Hao — a Shang Dynasty queen—as the prototype (原型) for the medals. In the final design, the opposite side of the medals has the Olympic rings engraved in the center, surrounded by five big concentric (同心的) rings. Auspicious cloud patterns, as well as snowflakes and ice patterns are engraved between the circles. The cloud patterns are intended to maintain a cultural connection with the 2008 Games, while the snowflakes and ice patterns speak to the characteristics of the Winter Olympics.
The cases holding the medals are made of bamboo. “The International Olympic Committee inquired about the growth and processing of the bamboo to ensure it meets the requirements of a green Olympics and follows the concept of sustainable (可持续的) development,” Hang said.
The medals passed the quality test and were accepted by the Games’ organizing committee on January 7, 2022. The medals are officially named Tongxin and they are the result of many people’s efforts. However, the smile on the athletes’ faces as they wear them makes it all worthwhile.
1.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The history of the Olympic medals.
B.The inspiration for the 2008 medal patterns.
C.The significance of the 2022 Winter Olympics.
D.The essential requirements of the 2022 medal designs.
2.How are the 2022 medals different from the 2008 medals
A.2022 medals use the jade as a material.
B.2022 medals reflect the spirit of China’s jade culture.
C.2022 medals mark an innovation in the medal designs.
D.2022 medals follow the concept of environmental protection.
3.Why did the designers add cloud patterns to the 2022 medals
A.To strengthen the bond with the 2008 Games.
B.To show the charm of Chinese traditional culture.
C.To stand for harmony between human and nature.
D.To match with the features of the Winter Olympics.
4.What do we know about the cases holding the medals
A.They took a lot of time to process.
