Unit 3 How do you get to school?
The First Period (Section A 1a—2d)
Teaching Aims
1. Knowledge Objects
(1) Function: Talk about how to get to places.
(2) Key vocabulary: subway, train, sixty, seventy, ninety, eighty, hundred, far, minute, by, far, kilometer, new
(3) Target language: ①—How to get to school?—I ride my bike. ② –How long does it take? –It takes about forty minutes. ③ –How far is it from your home to school? –It’s 10 kilometers.
(4) Structure: “How”questions. “How long”questions. “How far ”questions.”
2. Ability Objects
To learn to talk about : --—How to get to school? –How long does it take? –How far is it from your home to school?
3. Moral Objects
Help students establish the concept of time, and form a habit of punctuality.
Teaching key points
1. To learn to ask ways of getting to school with “how” questions.
2. To talk about the time to get to some places.

The difference between “I take the subway to school” and “I get to school by subway”.

A tape recorder. Some pictures.
Teaching procedures
Step 1 Leading in (about 10 minutes)
In these days, there are many ways of transportation, so it is very easy and convenient to go from one place to another. In this class, let’s learn Unit 3 “How do you get to school? ”
Step 2 Presentation (about 10 minutes)
1. Show students some pictures. And ask the students that how many means of transportation there are in it. What are they? The look at the pictures and learn the new words “subway”, “train”.
2. Show own pictures of the means of transportation and say: “ I take the bus to school.” Ask: “How do you get to school?” Let students answer the questions.
Step 3 Practice in pairs or in groups (about 15 minutes)
1. Make conversations like this: “How do you get to school? I take the bus to school. ” Pay attention to “how questions”.
2. Then let the students say: “ How other students in the picture get to school” Give them some help if necessary. Like this:
“—How does he get to school?” “—He takes the subway to school.”
3. (1) Let’s look at the book P13, 1a. Then check the answers.
(2) Book P13, 1b. Listen and do the exercises. Then check the answers. Ask one student to say the answers, the others say their own ideas.
4. Show some pictures to the students and say “ My home is far from school, so it takes me about 25 minutes to get to school.”
Let students pay attention to the numbers. And listen to 2a to master the new words. Then ask the students “ How long does it take you to get to school” “How far is it from your home to school?” Listen to 2b and 2c to get some information, then practice the conversations in pairs.
5. Guessing games
(1) Give the pictures with covering a part of them; let students guess how somebody gets to some places, and how long it takes.
(2) Write: let students write how he or she goes to school.
Step 4 Summary (about 9 minutes)
Let students close the books and say what they have learnt in this class. Other students add missing. Then read them together.
Step 5 Homework (about 1 minute)
Do a survey about how your parents or friends work or go to school, and tell them what is the best way to work or school. Why?
The second period (Section A 2e—3c)
Teaching Aims
1. Knowledge Objects
(1) Function: Talk about how to get to places and how far it is from one place to another.

Step 1 Leading in (about 10 minutes)
T:Hello, everyone! What’s the weather like today? It’s a sunny day.
Show a map of the city then say “I live far from school. I often get to school by car, sometimes I get to school by bike. What about you?” ?Let students talk about it.
Step 2 Presentation (about 10--15 minutes)
1. First use the cards to review the number from thirty to hundred. Or play a game: one says numbers in Chinese, the other says in English. Then show a picture from a girl’s home to her school, and learn the new part 2e. Look at the picture in 2e and practice the sentence : “How long does it take her to get to school?”“How far is it from her home to school?”
2. Show some other pictures and practice these two sentences.
3. Read 2e and make conversations. Then ask the students to find the language points and let the students discuss them in groups. Show their answers together. The teacher explain the difficult points.
Step 3 Practice in pairs or in groups (about 8--10 minutes)
1. To practice 2e in groups. List the main phrases in 2e and let students retell it in groups and ask some of them to show their answers.
2. Have students read the sentences of Grammar Focus. Let them pay attention to the structure “how questions”. Then ask several pairs of students to do some oral practice using?“how questions”.
3. Ask students to match the questions with the answers. Then let students make up new conversations according to the sentences in 3a. And then practice the conversations in pairs or in groups.
4. Use the words in 3b to make questions, then answer them and practice the conversations in pairs.
5. Do a survey. Ask the classmates“How do you get to school??”“How long does it take?” “?How far is it from her home to school?” and then write their answers in the chart to complete 3c.
Step 4 Summary (about 10 minutes)
Let students show what they have learnt in this class. They can show the main sentences to us. They can also make conversations using the main sentences.
Step 5 Homework (about 1 minute)
To make four conversations using the words in the 3b.
