Jane was not a confident girl before, because she was fat and others often laughed at her. As a result, Jane became very shy. She was scared to say hello to strangers. She was afraid to ask simple questions and speak loud in front of others. It seemed that she felt afraid of everything in her life. She used to believe that she would be like this all her life.
But one day, her friend Paul’s words changed her mind. He encouraged Jane to change herself. He said, “If you can give it a try, you will have a chance to make a change. But if you never try, your life is only going to get worse.” Jane was deeply touched by what Paul said. She thought, “Why not have a try After all, I had nothing to lose.”
The first thing Jane did was lose weight. She had a strict diet and did exercise every day. After 6 months, she lost 90 pounds. This taught her that she could change herself.
A few months later, Jane heard about a speech competition at her university. She plucked up (鼓起) the courage to sign up for the competition. For the first time, she was able to share her story and speak loud in front of many people. In the end, she got a big prize!
After the competition, Jane made a to-do list and started changing rapidly. She tried her best to finish the things on the list one by one. When working on them, she became more and more confident.
Jane was still making progress now. And she will never stop.

A teacher once told her students to bring a bag and some potatoes to school. When they didn’t want to forgive(原谅)a person, they chose a potato and wrote the person’s name on it. Then they put it in the bag. Some of their bags became heavier and heavier.
They were told to carry their bags with them everywhere for one week. They would put them beside their beds at night, on the seats when sitting on buses, and next to their desks at school. Carrying the bags everywhere made the students very tired. They felt heavy stones in their hearts. And they had to pay attention to them all the time, so they didn’t forget them. The potatoes went bad and smelt terrible soon.
Forgiveness is a gift to other people. However, it is also a gift to us at the same time. If we keep our sadness and hatred(仇恨)in our hearts, we will have to carry them around all our lives. So we should learn to forgive.

On May 22, 2021, people in China and around the world felt sad because China’s “father of hybrid rice(杂交水稻)” Yuan Longping died.
Yuan worked as a teacher at an agriculture(农业) school in An Jiang, Hunan after graduation. Seeing many people die of hunger from 1959 to 1961, he decided to study hybrid rice.
Yuan spent four years looking for a wild rice strain(品牌) that could be crossed(杂交). In 1964, he found it!
Yuan put all his life into creating hybrid rice, which ended hunger for millions of people not only in China, but around the world. Hybrid rice is grown in 57 percent of China’s rice fields. It is also grown in over 40 countries, including India, the US and Brazil.
In 2020, Yuan’s team set a new world record in growing hybrid rice.
Yuan was not only a great scientist but also a talented man. He had many hobbies, such as volleyball, swimming and violin.
Though he has left, we will respect and remember him forever.

What does taking the train mean to you Perhaps it’s just a way of getting to your destination(目的地). In fact, the train itself can be part of the fun.
On March 28th, China’s first panda-themed tourist train left Chengdu in Sichuan for Zunyi in Guizhou. It soon became the talk of China with its special design and comfortable service.
It’s inside and outside are decorated with giant panda pictures. Attendants(乘务员) carry panda toys and passengers can try panda-shaped food and Sichuan snacks. Some people call it a mobile star hotel because it has a bar, karaoke room, dance hall, and mahjong(麻将) room.
This luxury(高档的) service is one aspect that has attracted travelers. But train travel interests people for other reasons.
In the fast-paced times we live in, train travel is a good way to slow down. It gives you time and space to read, sleep, chat with friends, or simply do nothing but watch the changing scenery outside.
One surprising thing is that you might meet new people. Sheng Yawei, 26, once took the longest railway in the world—the Trans-Siberian Railway in the world. Sheng met a Russian student and they became friends. “I also met a cute boy who gave me melon seeds(瓜子). Though we didn’t understand each other’s language, it made me feel nice.”

As an exchange student, I studied in France for two years. The first time I took a class in the chemistry lab, I was surprised to find that students were fully “armed”. Everyone was wearing goggles (护目镜) and gloves. Safety comes first for science lab class.
My chemistry teacher Mrs. Louise usually gave us the instruction paper the night before the lab class and let us read it. During the class, she first went over the steps and then put us into groups of two to do the experiments (实验). What was special was that for every lab class, Mrs. Louise changed everyone’s lab partner to make them work with different classmates.
The class was often filled with laughter and screams (尖叫). We once tried to burn the chemicals and watch the colors of the flames (火焰). Different chemicals produced different colors of flames, including bright orange and dark green. Many students in my class were surprised. “Wow! That’s so beautiful!” they screamed. Then they excitedly took pictures, posted them online and sent them to their friends. Mrs. Louise didn’t get angry with us at all for our “noises”. She herself even took photos with us!
After finishing an experiment, we had to write a lab report. If we had a big mistake in the experiment, we needed to analyze (分析) why it happened and what we should do to avoid it next time. The lab reports were very important. They made up around 25% of our term grade.
