1. That is a large population, but smaller than that of China.这是一个庞大的人口，但是人口比中国要少些。
①表示人口多与少，常用large 或 small 来修饰。
②句中的 “that” 用来替代上文中提到的 population, 在比较级或含有比较意味的句子中，常用 that 来替代上文提到的名词。比较级中用that 代指比较对象（单数）。
2.Canada is the biggest of the three countries in area.
加拿大是三个国家中面积最大的。
1)area表示面积，通常为可数名词 ，某些表达中也作不可数名词（常用单位：square 平方）
2)在面积方面、在面积上用
介词in表示“在……方面”。类似的用法有：in size 意为“在大小方面”；in shape 意为“在形状方面” 。

“the +序数词+最高级+单数名词+范围”，表示“……是……的第几……”，注意形容词最高级前加基数词和序数词时意义不同。如：
