The First Period (Section A 1a—1c)
Teaching Aims
1. Knowledge Objects

② Don’t arrive late for class.
③ Don’t run in the hallways.

Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Free talk (about 5 minutes)
Have a free talk with the students. Talk about “Can we eat in class?” The talk may be like this:
A: Can we eat in class?
B: No, we can’t. We can’t eat in class.
A: Can we run in the hallways?
B: No, we can’t. We can’t run.
A: So, don’t run in the hallways.
A: Can we listen to music in the classroom or the hallways?
B: No, we can’t. We can’t listen to music in the classrooms and the hallways.
A: So, don’t listen to music in the classrooms and hallways.
Step 2 Presentation (about 5 minutes)
Show students a picture of a teacher and some pictures of students who are breaking school rules.
T: Are they good students? What rules are these students breaking?
Step 3 Match (about 5 minutes)
Finish 1a.
Let the students look at the picture and say what rules do the students break. Let them say it one by one and let the students read the school rules in the left box. Then match them.
Step 4 Listening (about 5 minutes)
Finish 1b.
First let students guess what rule Peter/Selina/Mike is breaking.
Let students listen to the tape, and ask them whether they have guessed correctly or not.
Step 5 Competition (about 15 minutes)
Have a competition between boys and girls, let them say as many school rules as they can. Have a talk like this:
T: There are many school rules in our school. What rules are they? Can you name any of them?
S1: Don’t eat in class.
S2: We can’t fight.
Practice in pairs like this:
A: Can you fight?
B: No, we can’t. We can’t fight.
A: So, don’t fight.
Teach these important expressions:
school rules (keep the rules遵守规则, break the rules违反规则)
be late for class=arrive late for class
Step 6 1c (about 5 minutes)
Let students work in pairs, and practice the dialogue like:
A: Can we arrive/be late for class?
B: No, we can’t. We can’t arrive/be late for class.
A: So, don’t arrive/be late for class.
T: What are the school rules?
S1: We can’t arrive late for class.
S2: We can’t run in the hallways.
Step 7 Summary (about 5 minutes)
In this class, we have learnt:

2.sentences: Don’t arrive late for class.

(3) Target Language: ①Don’t be late for class.
② And we always have to wear the school uniform.

Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Warm up (about 5 minutes)
1. Revise the language points of last class.
2. Talk about some rules in English.
Step 2 Presentation (about 5 minutes)
Take out an apple. Have a talk with the students like this:
T: Can I eat an apple in class now?
Ss: No, you can’t.
T: Can you eat apples in class now?
Ss: No, we can’t.
Repeat it with a cigarette.
Step 3 Practice (about 5 minutes)
Show students some pictures, then let students talk about them with “Can you/we…?”
S1: Can we arrive late for class?
S2: No, we can’t. We can’t arrive late for class.
Let students practice in pairs. Try to act it out in front of the class.
Step 4 Listening and talking (about 5 minutes)
1. Finish 2a, 2b and 2c. Check the activities Alan and Cindy talk about.
2. Listen again. Can Alan and Cindy do these activities? Circle “can” or “can’t”. Then talk about the rules mentioned in 2a.
Step 5 2d (about 5 minutes)
(Working in groups)
This activity provides oral practice using the target language. Work in pairs. Student A is a new student. He wants to know the school rules. Student B tells him/her about the rules like this:
A: What are the school rules?
B: Well, we can’t arrive late for class. So don’t be late for class.
A: (repeat) Don’t be late for class. Are there any other school rules?
B: Yes, don’t…/We can’t…/We have to…/We must…
Ask several pairs of students to act out the conversation to the class. Then, ask and answer the questions about the rules of this school. Give true answers. Pay attention to “have to” and “must”.
Step 6 Grammar Focus (about 5 minutes)
Review the grammar box. Ask students to say the questions and answers.
T: Circle the words “have to”. Pay attention to the verb that follows “have to”. And the simple form of the verb follows “have to” and it never has an “-s” at the end of it. Yes/No questions with “have to ” have the same form as present simple Yes/No questions.
Step 7 3a, 3b (about 5 minutes)
1. Show students some school rules, then let them practice “Don’t we /you have to…?”
School rules:
(1) Keep tidy and clean.
(2) Get to school before 7:20.
(3) Be polite.
(4) Respect each other.
Pair work. Ask students to practice in pairs like this:
A: What are the school rules, Alex?
B: Well, we can’t eat in the classroom.
A: We can’t eat in the library, too. But we can eat in the dinning hall.
A: Oh, we can’t wear a hat in class.
B: Well, we can’t play football at noon.
A: What else do you have to do?
B: We have to clean the classroom.
2. Finish 3a
Show students a picture of the school library. Let them talk about it.
S1: Can we…?
S2: Yes, we can./No, we can’t.
The rules for the library:
No food!
No wet umbrellas!
No listening to music!
No talking! or Don’t talk loudly.
No school bags!
This activity provides writing practice using the target language “don’t do…, have to…” Ask some students to read their lists to the class.
Step 8 3b (about 5 minutes)
1. Let students use the words to make questions about the rules. And then write the answers according to the school. Then let some students to read their answers.
2. Let students finish the exercise in groups.
Step 9 3c (about 5 minutes)
The rules for thedream school:
Let students talk about the school rules that they dreamed in groups, then make a list of the rules. Let one student of every group write their rules on the blackboard, then vote for the coolest school.
Step 10 Summary (about 4 minutes)
In this class, we have learnt some words: have to, wear, important, bring, player, uniform, quiet and some rules.
Step 11 Homework (about 1 minute)
1. Make a list of things you have to do at school first. Add as much as you can, then make a report.
