Let's try doing the following experiment. Use a piece of string to hang a paper clip or any
other small object at about chest (胸部) level. Pick up a stick, such as a broom handle. Take
three or four steps away from the paper clip. Now close one eye and walk toward the paper clip.
Try to touch it with the tip of the stick. If you miss, try again, still keeping one eye closed. Now
try it with both eyes open and see if it's easier to do that.
What can we learn from the experiment In the experiment, you have to judge how far
away the paper clip is. Your brain has several ways of doing this. One simple way depends
on how much your eye has to focus (聚焦) itself. Using only one eye, most people will find it
difficult to touch the paper clip on the first try but the brain still gets some information about
distance - though not much.
On the other hand, your brain can judge distance much better when you look at something
with both eyes. In fact, your brain has more than one way to use both eyes in judging distance.
For example, to see anything clearly, you have to make both of your eyes point at the object.
When you look at a nearby object, your eyes turn inward. You can feel this happening if you
look at the tip of your finger and move your finger toward your nose. Your brain gets information from the eyes about how much they are pointing toward each other. Using that information, the brain can tell how far away any object is, whether it is a basketball or a paper clip.
( )46. How many kinds of things do we need at least to do the experiment
A. Two. B. Three. C. Four. D. Five
( )47. The passage mainly tells us that with eyes our brain can judge

B. Our brain cannot judge the distance of a small object but a big one.
C. How much our eyes focus helps our brain judge the size of an object.
D. How much our eyes focus helps our brain judge the distance of an object.

A. with one eye we can see an object as clearly as with two eyes

When something goes wrong. it can be very possible say. "Well. it's so - and - so's fault. "
or "l know I m late. but it s not my fault: the car broke town. " It is probably not your fault, but
once you form the habit of blaming (责怪) something or somebody else for a bad situation, you
are a loser You have no power and can do nothing to change the situation. However, you can
have great power over what happens to you if you stop focusing on whom to blame and start
focusing on how to remedy the situation. This is the winner's key to success.
54 For example, if you are late because your car has broken down, maybe you need
to have your car chocked more regularly. Or, you may start to carry along with you the useful
phone numbers, so you can call for help when in need. For another example, when your
workmate causes you problems on the job, find ways of dealing with them rather than blame
the person. You have to accept that the person is not reliable and find creative ways to work
successfully even if your workmate fails to do his or her job well.
This is what being a winner is all about - creatively using your skills and talents(才能)
so that you arc successful no matter what happens. Winners don't have fewer problems in their
lives; they have just as many difficult situations to face as anybody else. They are just better at
seeing those problems as challenges and chances to develop their own talents. So, stop focusing
on whose fault it is. Once you are confident about your power over bad situations and have full
control, problems are just stepping stones for success.

Is your TV connected to the Internet What about your chair or your fridge It is possible
that they are not. But in the future, most things in your home may be connected. as the so - called "Internet of Things"is developing.
The Internet of Things may be coning sooner than you think. It is reported that during his
speech earlier this year, Samsung CEO spent a lot of time talking about the Internet of Things.
He said that five years from now. every Samsung product will be part of the Internet of Things,
whether it's a washing machine or a vacuum cleaner.
So, how do household objects that are part of Internet of Things work Well. think of a
usual chair. When connected to the Internet, the chair warms up when it knows that the user
has just walked into the room and is feeling cold. An Internet - connected camera can help
people feel safer in their homes. It knows people s faces, and can even see when someone
passes by in the dark. Then it can send you a message on your smartphone to let you know
who's there.
But according to MIT Technology Review, whether companies are connecting dog food
bowls or security (安全) systems to the Internet, there may be problems. For example, the
connected objects may be hacked (黑客/攻击). Also, it can be difficult to get these devices to
work together because they are made by different companies. To fight this, many companies
have joined the Open Interconnect Consortium, an organization which aims to develop
standards for the Internet of Things.
So, picture this: you walk in through the front door of your home. The temperature
changes to make you feel comfortable after a long day at school. Your favourite music starts
playing for you. Do you think that a smart home like this would be a good thing It may happen
sooner than you think.

九、任务型阅读(共10分,每小题1分)
阅读下面的短文.根据文中信息完成文后表格.每空一词。
If you receive an email that looks something like this: ARE YOU GOING TO CLASS
TODAY How does reading this message make you feel Why did the sender use all capital
letters Was he or she angry. or did that person just forget to turn off the Caps Lock on the
computer In fact. using capital letters is usually a way that people shout online. Knowing
when to use or not to use capital letters is just one example of online etiquette (礼仪) -
often called netiquette. Virginia Shea's book, Netiquette, lists a basic set of dos and don 's for
communicating suitably with others on the Internet. Following are some of her suggestions.
First of all, always remember that you are sending messages to a real person, not just to a
computer. Don't write anything on the computer that you wouldn't say to someone's face. Also,
remember that the person who receives your message cannot hear the tone of your voice or see
the expression on your face, so make sure your meaning is clear.
Next, don't do anything online that. you wouldn't do in real life. Don't take anything
without paying for it, unless it's free. Don't take information from someone else, and say
it's yours. Don't read other people's emails - you wouldn't open your next - door neighbour’s
mailbox and read their mail, right
Try to write well. Good writing skills, as well as correct grammar and spelling, do matter.
Send polite, well - written emails or messages to others. If you're uncertain about how to spell a
word or which phrase to choose, look it up. There are lots of helpful books and websites.
Also, it's okay to show your ideas online in the chat room, but don't start arguments with
people. Arguments can't help to solve problems but may lead to more problems. Other people in
the chat room may feel uncomfortable to see the fighting. Therefore, express your opinions, but
remember that fighting online or offline is just not suitable.
When you're online, try to respect (尊重) other people’s privacy(隐私) and feelings, as
you do in real life. Remember, you are not the only one travelling on this highway!
Netiquette: a _____91_____book about manners online
Dos Express your meaning ____92________. Send polite, well-written emails or messages to others. Respect other people’s privacy and feelings.
