Lucio Arreola is 50 years old, the father of three daughters and a bank manager in Puerto Rico. He is going to have a surprising Father’s Day this year. He finds just about every day surprising now. Arreola has a new heart, or at least, new to him. On April 20, doctors transplanted (移植) the heart of a dead 25- year-old man into him. Although he may never know the man’s identity, he and his family will always be grateful to him.
Arreola was told he had a heart muscle disease 15 years ago that weakened his breathing and
circulation, so he went on a lot of medications. His wife and daughters worried about his health, while he worried about their happiness.

Lucio Arreola has been recovering from his heart transplant surgery at Houston Methodist over the past two months. “One day up, one day down,” he said. “Some days dark, some light. But what happens is that when the sun is out, you really feel it. Every breath is sweet. You see the trees and people. You hear your daughters laugh, and it’s like birds singing. You tell yourself, ‘There is no time in life for anything but love.’”
Liz Laguaite, a hospital music therapist, told Arreola and his family, “Why don’t you try to write a
song together about what you’ve been through and what you’ve learned ” They decided to try. Lucio Arreola worried that illness might make his daughters see him as a delicate man. But instead of frailty, they mostly saw his courage to go on. And he said their love was like his own powerful heart muscle that gave him faith, hope and courage.
“My weak heart,” he said, “helped make them strong.”
Lucio Arreola said he had learned that human hearts were delicate. But a family’s love was enduring. The Arreolas recorded the song they created while Lucio recovered. The song begins with the strong beat of a father’s loving heart.

C.The importance of exercise. D.The courage to live on.

The Dead Sea, a salt lake close to Israel, Jordan and the West Bank, is shrinking at an alarming rate— about 3.3 feet per year, according to the environmentalist group EcoPeace Middle East. And human actions are largely to blame.
“It's not just like one country is punishing the Dead Sea; it's more like the whole region,” said
photographer Moritz Küstner, who visited the area in February to work on his series “The Dying Dead Sea”.
The Dead Sea needs water from the other natural sources surrounding it, such as the Jordan River basin.
But around the 1960s, some of the water sources it relied upon were diverted.
Mineral extraction industries are another main reason why the water levels are declining, experts say. The Dead Sea's minerals have been popular for their medical power and can often be found in cosmetics (化妆品) and other consumer products.
And then, of course, there's the Middle East's hot, dry climate, which makes it difficult for the lake to refill itself.
Israel and Jordan have signed a $900 million deal in an effort to stabilize the Dead Sea's water levels.
It involves building a canal from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea so that both countries would be able to
not only supply water to Israel and Jordan but also to pump much needed water—some 300 million cubic meters annually—into the Dead Sea.
“This is the most important and significant agreement since the peace treaty with Jordan (in 1994),”
said Silvan Shalom, Israel's energy and water resources minister at the time.
Whether the canal—estimated to take three years to complete—will work out positively and as planned remains to be seen.
Moritz Küstner visited the Dead Sea to ________.
A.shoot TV series about people's action there
B.make a survey about the sea level
C.do his photographic series work
D.research into environmental problems
Something's happening at the lowest point on our planet, some 1,388 feet below the sea level.
高二英语第2页共6页
Which of the following statements is NOT the reason for the water levels' declining
A.The other natural sources the Dead Sea relied on were switched.
B.The Dead Sea's minerals have been dug and used in some products.
C.The Middle East's climate makes the lake itself difficult to store water.
D.Israel and Jordan are the two countries to destroy the Dead Sea.
What measure has been taken to save the Dead Sea
A.Bringing in water from the Red Sea.
B.Introducing water from Israel and Jordan.
C.Taking Israel's energy and water resources.
D.Struggling for international support.
What does the passage mainly tell us
A.Why the Dead Sea is dying and the measures taken to save it.
B.How important the Dead Sea is in Israel, Jordan and the West Bank.
C.How to solve the problem that the Dead Sea is being destroyed.
D.Protecting the environment is in no hurry all over the world.

Despite being there for your safety, many people still ignore the red man at traffic lights and cross early, running the risk of a deadly accident. Now Smart, a car maker, has come up with a smart idea for an experiment to see if safety could be improved at traffic lights by encouraging pedestrians to wait for the green man with a "Dancing Traffic Light".
The Dancing Traffic Light was designed to draw the attention of people who were standing waiting to
cross the road in Portugal. It shows a dancing red figure, as opposed to the static (静态的) figure that is normally shown. The figure is a low-resolution (低分辨率的) representation of someone who is in a room nearby, dancing.
Those who want to dance can go into the room and then select music of their choice. When the traffic light turns red, the music plays and the individual can then start to dance. A video is fed of the person
dancing in real lime to the traffic light and the dancing red figure can keep pedestrians amused while they wait.
Apart from providing entertainment for pedestrians as they wait to cross the road, there is also the
"gaming" side to the Dancing Traffic Light as anyone can be the dancing figure and so he or she can contribute to the project.
This isn't the first time that entertainment has been used for positive social outcomes. The Volkswagen
Fun Theory campaign involved a Piano Staircase which encouraged people to walk up the stairs instead of using an elevator and the Bottle Bank Arcade that was made to encourage people to recycle.
Smart said that 81 % more people stopped at die red light to watch it dance while they waited for the
green light to appear.
Why did Smart design the Dancing Traffic Light
To help reduce traffic accidents.
To make traffic lights more interesting.
To provide entertainment for pedestrians.
To draw the attention of pedestrians.
13. What is the idea behind the Dancing Traffic Light
A real person dances beside the traffic light.
A pedestrian performs a dance while waiting.
An individual dances to various music in a room.
A figure dances in real time to red traffic lights.
14. What does the author want to stress in Paragraph 5
The needs for more such campaigns.
The use of entertainment in some social activities.
The influence of the Dancing Traffic Light.
The good results of safety products.

15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
Road Safety—An Essential Task
A Campaign—A Solution from the Air
A Dancing Traffic Light—A Guardian of Life

You may be wondering what benefits students gain from cooperative learning. The answer is many! Other than giving students the opportunity to learn from each other, cooperative learning, of course, teaches a number of social and emotional skills. 16_____________.
Leadership Skills
In order for a cooperative learning group to succeed, individuals within the group need to show leadership abilities. 17___________ . Natural leaders become quickly obvious in small groups, but most students don't naturally want to lead. Assign(分配)leadership roles of different importance to every member of a group to help all individuals practice leading.
Communication Skills
.All members of a cooperative learning group have to learn to speak productively
with one another to stay on track. By teaching students to share confidently, listen carefully, and speak clearly, they learn to value the input of their teammates and the quality of their work improves greatly.
.
There are many decisions to be made in a cooperative environment. Encourage students to think as a team to make joint decisions by first having them come up with a team name.20______________. Make sure that each student has their own responsibilities in cooperative learning groups. Much like leadership skills, decision-making skills cannot be developed if students are not regularly practicing them.
Teamwork Skills
Decision-Making Skills
From there, have them decide who will complete what tasks.
Without this, the group cannot move forward without a teacher.
Effective teamwork requires good communication and responsibility.
Often, leaders of the group are also the ones that make most of the decisions.
The following skills developed through regular and effective cooperative learning are just a few of many.
