What makes Dunhuang unique
Dunhuang is unique because of the Mogao Grottoes, its incredibly detailed, colourful murals and the Mingsha Mountain.
The Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟), also known as the Thousand Buddha Grottoes (千佛洞), form a system of 492 temples 25km (16 mi) southeast of the center of Dunhuang, an oasis(绿洲) strategically located at a religious and cultural crossroads on the Silk Road, in Gansu province, China.
Mogao Grottoes is a group of ancient caves which were built in different dynasties. It is famous for exquisite(精美的)的murals(壁画)and various sculptures(建筑) kept inside the caves. With 735 caves, more than 45,000 square meters of murals, 2415 colored sculptures of different size, the caves contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art (佛教艺术) spanning a period of 1,000 years.
