I wandered into an exhibition about Janusz Korczak in Rome, and was overcome by the heroism of this ordinary man. I say ordinary—he was actually quite well-known as children’s author and an educator, but nothing can have prepared him for the decisions he had to take.
Trained as a medical doctor, Korczak became a children’s author and teacher. He ran two orphanages(孤儿院)in Warsaw—one for Jewish children, the other for Catholics. As a liberal and progressive thinker, he set up a children’s “republic” in the Jewish orphanage, with its own parliament(议会), court and newspaper. He suffered deprivation(损失)and danger for the sake of the children in his care, and ultimately chose to die with them, despite being given the opportunity to save himself. After the Germans created the Warsaw Ghetto in 1940, Korczak’s Jewish orphanage was forced to move into it. He went with the children, though he’d been offered shelter elsewhere. He stayed with them until August 1942, when he was sent to Treblinka with some 200 children and staff. They were never heard of again; it’s assumed that they all died in the gas chambers(毒气室).
The moment he led the children to the train to Treblinka, described movingly by eyewitnesses(目击者), his face lit up. The composer Wladyslaw Szpilman recalled that Korczak told the orphans to be glad, because they were going to the countryside and would be free of the city where they had suffered a lot. He wanted to spare them the terror of death.
Korczak should be remembered alongside people such as Sir Nicholas Winton, Raoul Wallenberg and Oskar Schindler. They managed to save lives, but Korczak sacrificed his, refusing to abandon his children on their final journey. I could never imagine being put to the same test. But I love children, as he must have done.
24.What did Korczak do for children
A.Give lectures. B.Write liberal articles.
C.Set up a “republic” for children. D.Offer medical care.
25.What can be inferred in Paragraph 2
A.Korczak was once in heavy debt.
B.The Germans created shelters for children.
C.The Warsaw Ghetto was unknown until 1942.
D.Korczak adopted Jewish and Catholic children.
26.How did Korczak spare the kids’ fright
A.By accompanying them to Treblinka. B.By freeing them from Germany.
C.By being honored as a hero. D.By sacrificing his life.
27.What kind of person is Korczak
A.Wise and determined. B.Devoted and selfless.
C.Caring and ambitious. D.Productive and passionate.

Directions, luggage delivery, tasty food. Those are some of the things we’ve seen robots offering at the media center of Beijing Winter Olympics. And most of the robots we’ve seen here aren't made to look human. Instead, they present a wide range of looks.
Two of the most advanced robots regularly operate in crowded space. One greets visitors, answers questions and offers to guide people through the crowds. Another one cleans the carpeted hallways of the main press center. It speaks to passersby in a woman’s voice. It seems to be speaking English. But we cannot make it out well, because it also plays joyful music while its two front brushes are clearing dust and dirt like a futuristic street-sweeper.
Don’t assume these robots work all hours just because they’re robots. They have carefully managed schedules. For example, the snack robots just go around the media center for about 15 minutes every hour—usually only between noon and 17: 00.
Another kind of robots helps out with logistics(物流)at the media center. These robots can carry up to 300 kilograms of goods, move freely along the relatively empty halls and automatically recharge themselves. They send unique codes through text messages to the receivers when the delivery has arrived. Then they can pick up the goods with the codes.
There are even COVID-fighting robots, which move around pre-programmed areas spreading chemicals. Food ordering, making and serving in the dining room are fully automatical too. Reporters from around the world can enjoy various food options here.
In short, robots are expected to play an outstanding role in the upcoming Beijing Winter Olympics. But the most important goal is to reduce direct contact(接触)between people.
28.What can the robots do according to paragraph 2
A.Sing and dance at the entrance.
B.Guide guests in crowded areas.
C.Cook and serve in the dining room.
D.Deliver goods and recharge automatically.
29.What can we know about the snack robots
A.They look like street-sweepers. B.They show up every 15 minutes.
C.They cook food on site for the guests. D.They have pre-programmed schedules.
30.What is the main purpose of employing robots at the media center
A.To reduce direct human contact. B.To promote made-in-China robots.
C.To meet the challenge of labor shortage. D.To test the reliability of AI technologies.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.A Wonderful Day at 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics
B.Helpful Robots at Beijing Winter Olympics Media Center
C.Robots’ Important Roles at 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics
D.A Unique Robot Show at Beijing Winter Olympics Media Center

China is one of the first countries to breed a medical culture. In comparison with Western methods, traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)adopt a vastly different approach. For thousands of years, Chinese people have accumulated rich experience in fighting all sorts of diseases, therefore forming a unique medical theory under the guidance of ancient Chinese philosophies.
The core behind TCM is that the human body’s life is the consequence of the balance between yin and yang. Yang functions to safeguard us against outer harm, and yin is the inner base to store and provide energy. When the balance between the two aspects is disturbed, people fall ill.
One of the traditional techniques of TCM, acupuncture(针刺疗法), means insertion(插入)of needles into superficial(表皮的)structures of the body—usually at acupoints(穴位)—to restore the yin-yang balance. It is often accompanied by moxibustion(灸法), which involves burning the mugwort(艾叶)on or near the skin at an acupoint.
The first known text that clearly talks about something like acupuncture and moxibustion as it is practiced today is Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon. It is the earliest and most important written work of TCM and is considered the most representative medical text in China.
Acupuncture and moxibustion have aroused the interest of international medical science circles. And TCM is gradually gaining worldwide recognition. The WHO issued a document in 2002 that appealed to more than 180 countries to adopt TCM as an alternative in their medical policies. In 2010, acupuncture and moxibustion of traditional Chinese medicine were added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO. Presently, TCM has been back in the news for its effectiveness in improving the cure rate of the COVID-19 since its outbreak in January 2020.

A.TCM. B.Acupuncture.

A.It distinguishes acupuncture from moxibustion.
B.It’s a foundation of world medical research.
C.It stresses the importance of using acupoints.
D.It greatly contributes to the development of TCM.
34.What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage
A.To introduce TCM to the world.
B.To review the development of TCM.
C.To tell TCM and Western medicine apart.
D.To comment on TCM in fighting COVID-19.
35.What might be talked about in the paragraph following the text

第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Freddie woke up to see it was snowing-again. The world outside was white. Snow covered the roads, the cars, the houses, and even the driveway Freddie had just shoveled(铲)the day before.
“Ugh,” said Freddie. “No more snow!” He got out of bed and headed to the bathroom for his regular morning shower. As he reached for the taps, his mother appeared in the doorway.
“I’ve got news,” she said. “There’s been so much snow overnight that the roads are slippery and dangerous. I just heard on the radio that they canceled the school buses for the day.”
Freddie groaned(抱怨). “Then how am I supposed to get to school ”
His mom grinned(咧着嘴笑). “I guess you don’t. It’s a snow day!”
Freddie’s eyes lit up. He’d never had a snow day off from school before. What would he do first
“I’m going back to bed!” Freddie headed back to his room and climbed under the covers. After a few minutes, he realized that it was too late. He was already wide awake. He headed down to the kitchen and then sat at the table, watching his father fry the eggs over in the pan and his mother pour juice and coffee. It was relaxing, thought Freddie.
After breakfast his mother suggested he go out and build a snowman. Freddie wasn’t too sure. He didn’t really like the cold and the snow. He’d rather stay inside and play video games.
“You can play afterward, but how about going outside for a little bit It’s good to get some fresh air, and who knows, you might even enjoy yourself.” Freddie unwillingly put on the warm clothes and headed outside.
Standing alone in the front yard, with the cold wind blowing, was not Freddie’s idea of a good time. Knowing his mom meant what she said, the boy sighed, thinking the quicker he completed his snowman, the faster he could go back inside to his video games. He set to work packing up some snow into a large ball.
Moments later, he saw one of his friends appearing from his house up the street. Dion waddled(蹒跚行走)out in his big snow trousers and heavy overcoat. He waved to Freddie.
“Hey there! I saw you out here and thought you might want company. Snow days are awesome!” Dion laughed.

One possible version:
Dear Allen,
How is everything going I’m more than happy to receive your e-mail, in which you asked me about my desire and plan after this epidemic.
At present, with the efforts of the whole nation, COVID-19 in China is almost under control. The first thing I’d like to do most after it is to live a healthy life. Only when we live healthily can we protect ourselves from diseases. To live a healthy life, firstly, I will pay more attention to the food I eat. As we know, we are what we eat. What’s more, doing exercise is also of great importance. I hope the epidemic in UK will come to an end soon.
Looking forward to your good news.
Yours,
Li Hua

M: Third-hand smoke I’m afraid not. What is that then
W: Well, it is here in today’s paper. Parents may think they are protecting children from second-hand smoke when they smoke outside their home or only when the children are not there. But now researchers are warning about what they call third-hand smoke. When you smoke, dangerous matter from cigarettes get into your hair and clothing. As babies are the weakest, when you come to a baby, you pass it to the baby and increase the chances of disease in the baby.
M: Is that so In that case I have to say that I should never get close to a baby.
W: That’s right. Actually all smoking parents should do the same or better give it up completely.

M: I saw you on the news! You’re a hero! Come on, tell me all the details.
W: Well, I was watching the pool from my chair, like I always do. There was a group of kids taking diving lessons in the deep end.
M: Go on…
W: I guess one of the students hit their head on the diving board, because I saw that someone was sinking to the bottom of the pool.
M: So, what did you do next
W: I jumped in the pool after their instructor jumped in and brought the kid back to the surface. It was a young girl, and she had swallowed a lot of water.
M: Wow. Did you give her mouth-to-mouth
W: Of course. Then I told one of the kids to call for an ambulance.
M: Quick thinking!
W: The girl coughed the water up almost immediately, and just like that, it was over. We cleaned the wound and bandaged it up, and the emergency services arrived twenty minutes later.
M: How was she
W: She had no memory of the past ten minutes. She wanted to go back in the pool. She didn’t even know why her parents were crying.
M: She must have been in shock.

W: Attention, passengers. This is a safety announcement. We would like to remind you that you should be careful today in the station, as the floor may be wet. Put your skateboards in the locked shelves at the top of the stairs. Even on sunny days, they are not allowed to be used near the trains. Those with walking sticks, just ask us if you need help. The station will be crowded today, with the snow bringing more passengers to take the train. Parents, please be sure that your children are always by your side. Of course, if you have problems, you can look for our staff in the center of the waiting area. For your safety, cameras are placed at each end of the waiting area. If you think anything of yours has been stolen, our cameras may have recorded it. We'll be able to help you find your things.
However, you should not have your luggage or other items out of your view. Our staff may need to remove or destroy anything left behind in the waiting area. Remember to watch the information boards for the latest weather report, and stay safe out there.
