Frank W. Woolworth was born in Rodman, New York, in 1852. His family was very poor farmers, and there was never enough to eat. Frank decided he did not want to be a farmer. He took a short business course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city.
Woolworth realized he had a natural skill for displaying goods to awaken people’s interest, but he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends (小商品) for as much as he could get. Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said: FIVE CENTS EACH. People fought and pushed to buy the things and the table was soon cleared.
Soon afterwards, Woolworth opened his own store, selling goods at five and ten cents. But he had another lesson to learn before he became successful. That is, if you want to make money by selling low-price goods, you have to buy them in large quantities directly from the factories. Once, for example, Woolworth went to Germany and placed an order for knives. The order was so large that the factory had to keep running 24 hours a day for a whole year. In this way, the price of the knives was cut down by half.
By 1919, Woolworth had over 1,000 stores in the USA and Canada, and opened his first store in London. He made many millions and his name became famous throughout the world. He always ran his business according to strict rules, of which the most important was: “THE CUSTOMER (顾客) IS ALWAYS RIGHT.”

It is the second week we have been studying English at university, and it is a new feeling for me. With the different language and the strange surroundings, I wonder how I can get used to school life in the US after graduating.
In yesterday’s class, the teacher Mr. Peters talked about baseball. He said, “Baseball is one of the most popular sports in the US. If you hope to speak English well, you must understand baseball. First you need to know the rules; then you need to try to find how it is related with the daily life.”
He gave us some examples and let some of us guess the meanings. Unfortunately, I had never seen a baseball game before, so I couldn’t make any sense of it at all. But I realized that it was very useful for me to study here and melt into American society, so I was eager to learn something about baseball.
So, after class, I got out a big dictionary and asked one of my friends who had been in the US for several years for help.
My friend told me more rules about the game, but the more he told me, the more confused I felt! Maybe one day I need to watch a real game to understand better!

Dear Jack,
Hello. I am writing to tell you about the changes of our classes. In case of the way to study, we used to listen to the teachers and take notes, but now our teachers put out questions, then we have group discussions. In case of the homework, we used to have much homework and have little time for other things but now we have little homework and much time. We can read many out-of-class books and search for information on the Internet. In case of the relationship between teachers and students, we always followed the instruction of the teachers in the past, but now teachers and students are just like friends.
