Former truck driver Chen Xianjun played a final chord(和弦) on the guitar as he and his band-mates—a salesperson, a farmer, and two doctors—enjoy themselves in the music. Behind them was the photo of a foreigner wearing a warm smile and hugging his guitar. It was 27-years-old Philip Hancock, an Australian teaching English in Chongqing.
Hancock died in May 2018 in Chongqing because of diabetes. His parents obeyed his wish to donate his organs. Hancock’s liver and kidneys save the lives of three people in the band. And his corneas helped the other two, including Chen see the world again.
“Last year, Red cross officials suggested we form a band in memory of Hancock. They said Hancock loved music and dreamed of having his own band one day,” Chen said, “I’m more than fortunate to be able to do this.”
Over the past year, the five “musicians” have learned different instruments in the studio.
The Band for One, a fitting name for the group, finally came to Hangzhou on Nov.7 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the implementation(实施) of voluntary organ donations in China.

Part of Eart ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )h’s beauty comes from its oceans.Ocean scientists study the chemical make-up of the ocean, weather patterns, the geography of the ocean floor, and many other areas.Their work is exciting, although sometimes dangerous.Using technology to do certain tasks helps. For example, robotic arms are used for very dangerous tasks.
One basic part of ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) ocean study is understanding waves and how they work.Wind is the great maker of waves. The waves we know are mostly produced by winds blowing over the sea. They are directly connected with the wind speed and the time that wind lasts.
Sometimes ocean l ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ife can be seen in the wave.Living things seem to be staying within the wave, moving slowly inside it as if they were weightless. Besides the beauty of waves, scientists are interested in their technical ways. The diagram of waves shows how scientists examine waves.Waves are measured(测量) from the top (crest) to the bottom (trough). This allows scientists to find out the height of a wave. They also measure waves from crest to crest to determine (测定) the length of a wave.21*cnjy*com
During serious sto ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rms, huge waves might cut a sea ship apart.Ships are at great risk of winding up as broken pieces after being hit by the force of a huge wave.By understanding the ocean, scientists can prevent this breakup of ships by predicting when the water will be too dangerous for people and their ships. The study of waves and the ocean also allows scientists to make sure how certain beaches were formed.By studying the oceans,a great deal can be learned about the surface we live on.

Scientists say they ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )’ve developed a new system(系统). It can use “machine learning” to predict when and where lightning(闪电) will strike(闪击). The research was led by engineers from Switzerland.
European resea ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )rchers have estimated(估算) between 6, 000 and 24,000 people are killed by lightning worldwide each year. The strikes can also cause power cuts, destroy houses and start forest fires. For these reasons, some climate scientists have studied to develop methods to predict and control lightning. But no system has been created to effectively predict lightning.
The new system ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) is being tested in the experiments(实验). It used a combination of data(数据资料) from weather stations and machine learning methods. The researchers developed a prediction model. It was trained to tell weather conditions that were possible to cause lightning.
The model was cr ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )eated with some data. The data was collected over a 12-year period from 12 Swiss weather stations in cities and mountain areas. The data related to(与……有关) four main surface conditions: air pressure, air temperature, relative humidity(相对湿度) and wind speed.
The atmospheric(大气的) d ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ata was put into a machine learning algorithm(计算程序), which compared it to records of lightning strikes. Researchers say the algorithm was then able to learn the conditions under which lightning happens.
Amirhossein Mostaj ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )abi is a PhD student who led the development of the new system. He said, “Common systems for collecting such data are slow and complex, and they require expensive collection equipment(设备) like radar or satellites (卫星).”
“Our system uses d ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ata that can be gotten from any weather station,” Mostajabi said. “This will improve data collection in the areas which are not covered by radar and satellites or in places where communication systems have been cut,” he added.

If your pencil b ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ox is broken, the batteries (电池) in your flashlights run out, or you have some leftover food, how will you deal with these things You will probably throw them all into one rubbish bin. But actually, we need to sort (分类) all the rubbish separately. If you don’t sort your rubbish, all of it will go to a special place where it is buried (埋藏) together. As a result, it will take up some fields. Some rubbish will pollute the groundwater. Some rubbish that can be reused will be wasted.
In recent ye ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ars, some Chinese cities have been working hard on rubbish sorting.

Part of Earth’s beauty ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) comes from its oceans.Ocean scientists study the chemical make-up of the ocean, weather patterns, the geography of the ocean floor, and many other areas.Their work is exciting, although sometimes dangerous.Using technology to do certain tasks helps.
Sometimes ocean life ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) can be seen in the wave.Living things seem to be staying within the wave, moving slowly inside it as if they were weightless. Besides the beauty of waves, scientists are interested in their technical ways. The diagram of waves shows how scientists examine waves.Waves are measured(测量) from the top (crest) to the bottom (trough). This allows scientists to find out the height of a wave. They also measure waves from crest to crest to determine (测定) the length of a wave.
During serious storm ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )s,huge waves might cut a sea ship apart.Ships are at great risk of winding up as broken pieces after being hit by the force of a huge wave.By understanding the ocean, scientists can prevent this breakup of ships by predicting when the water will be too dangerous for people and their ships. The study of waves and the ocean also allows scientists to make sure how certain beaches were formed.By studying the oceans,a great deal can be learned about the surface we live on.

Scientists say they’ve ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) developed a new system(系统). It can use “machine learning” to predict when and where lightning(闪电) will strike(闪击). The research was led by engineers from Switzerland.21教育网
The new system is bei ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ng tested in the experiments(实验). It used a combination of data(数据资料) from weather stations and machine learning methods. The researchers developed a prediction model. It was trained to tell weather conditions that were possible to cause lightning.
The model was ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) created with some data. The data was collected over a 12-year period from 12 Swiss weather stations in cities and mountain areas. The data related to(与……有关) four main surface conditions: air pressure, air temperature, relative humidity(相对湿度) and wind speed.
The atmospher ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ic(大气的) data was put into a machine learning algorithm(计算程序), which compared it to records of lightning strikes. Researchers say the algorithm was then able to learn the conditions under which lightning happens.
