China’s post-00s athletes attracted a lot of attention at the Tokyo Olympics. They were calm, professional and strong in the competition. Remember these youthful faces who had their moments on the Olympic stage.
The first gold medalist Yang Qian took the first gold medal of the 2020 Olympics on July 24. The 21-year-old shooter achieved the top honour in the women’s 10-metre air rifle (女子十米气步枪) event. The diving-teen duo (二人组) Chen Yuxi and Zhang Jiaqi won the second gold medal for the Chinese diving team on July 27. The duo took part in the women’s synchronized 10-metre platform (女子双人十米勘匕台) event. They finished with 363. 78 points over five rounds.
The calm genius Zhang Changhong took the last shooting gold of the Tokyo Olympics on August 2. With 466 points, he set a new world and Olympic record in men’s 50-metre rifle three positions (男子五十米步枪三姿). The 21-year-old became the youngest Olympic gold medalist in the event. The Olympic newcomer was calm throughout the competition. He stayed focused on his position and action, rather than on the other competitors. That was perhaps the secret to his success.

The diving prodigy Quan Hongchan 跳水天才全红婵
The 14-year-old diver Quan Hongchan, China’s youngest athlete in the Tokyo Olympic Games, won the gold medal in the women’s 10-metre platform final when she scored perfect 10s in three of her five dives. She barely made a ripple (水花) in the water during her final’s performance and tallied (记分) 466.2 points to dominate (主导) the field.
Born in a small village in South China’s Guangdong Province, Quan started diving when she was 7 years old. The reason why she chose to become an athlete is heartbreaking (令人心碎的) —she wanted to win prizes as early as possible to help her seriously ill mother.

The butterfly queen—Zhang Yufei 蝶泳女王——张雨霏
