Drew Goodall was once homeless. But a chance of meeting with a stranger turned his life around. Over 2 decades ago, Goodall worked with stars like Brad Pitt and Hugh Grant, being eager to be an actor in London. But poor theater reviews destroyed his confidence.
Goodall ran out of acting offers. He ran out of money and was evicted(驱逐), ending up on the streets of London. His home was a cardboard box, surviving on what little money people gave him. He took on many jobs like polishing and shining people's shoes. And he never asked anyone for help.
He purchased a brush and a tin of polish from what little he had from begging and he began his trade in London's financial district. Goodall didn't have a license to trade so he was wary(提防)of the authorities. But after six months, one of his regular customers made Goodall an offer that would turn his life around.
Goodall was allowed to set up on the hall of his customer's office, which gave him a more stable income. He was now off the streets. The business grew as he moved in to other establishments, inspiring Goodall to start his own shoeshine business Sunshine Shoeshine. He began hiring the homeless and those with special needs to help with his trade.
Goodall soon began earning around 250,000 a year in profit as he set up and expanded in various places around London. Sunshine Shoeshine employs mostly former homeless people like him. Goodall's story and his way of giving back boosted his employees' confidence as well, since he gave them a new chance in life.
Goodall remembers where he came from, and now he is able to transform lives through his efforts. This is what Sunshine Shoeshine is all about. He gives others the ability to take control of their lives once more. He just gives them a little push in the right direction.
24. What made Goodall lose confidence
A. His being homeless. B. Poor theatre previews.
C. Bad comments on theatre. D. Competition between actors.
25. Why did Goodall have to look out for the officials
A. He didn't have a place to trade at. B. He didn't possess a permit.
C. He didn't have confidence in trading. D. He didn't offer customers good service.
26. What did Goodall bring to his employees
A. Their creativity. B. Their education. C. Their confidence. D. Their health.
27. Which words can best describe Goodall
A. Ambitious but selfish. B. Generous and humorous.
C. Confident but stubborn. D. Determined and helpful.

Craving(渴望)for food is a normal part of life. Some people eat what they want and do not worry about it. Others cannot control their desires. Cravings can come from the senses. They can come from the smell of fresh bread when we walk by a bakery(面包店). They can come from stress that drives us to eat fast food.
What is the solution Scientists say cravings are normal. They are coming up with new ideas. "Mindfulness” is one idea. Experts say, "You do not have to make cravings go away. But you also do not have to eat because of them. It is accepting them rather than pushing them away.”
Dieting is not the answer. Dieters are more likely to notice food. They have a harder time removing their attention from food. They crave more food. A doctor said, “Our cravings rise and fall, like waves in an ocean. Trying to fight that wave will never work. Accept that it is there and surf with it.”
Focus on how food tastes, and then replace the problem food with higher-quality food. For example, replace candy with blueberries. A study showed that people who used acceptance and mindfulness kept their weight off.
A doctor told the story of a patient who ate a bag of potato chips when she watched a TV show. The doctor advised her to pay attention to every single chip she ate. How many chips did it take her to feel satisfied A few weeks later, the woman said she had reduced her chip habit. Now she satisfied her craving after the second potato chip.
28. Which of the following will inspire a craving for food
A. A moving film. B. The pressure of work.
C. A desire to control something. D. The lack of knowledge of food.
29. What solution do experts suggest to deal with such cravings
A. Fighting with them. B. Making them disappear. C. Having meals immediately. D. Taking them.
30. Why is the story of a patient mentioned
A. To prove the result of the study. B. To show the importance of habits.
C. To add more opinions on cravings. D. To suggest a way of losing weight.
31. In which section of a newspaper may the text appear
A. Medicine. B. Climate. C. Health. D. Economy.
D
Experts used to say a free market is the best way to run an economy. And for years, workers enjoyed the benefits of technology. Technology added jobs and higher income for workers. But another word for technology is automation. And now, some experts see technology as a threat to workers. It is said robots would create a larger economy that would benefit all. Now, experts see a growing gap in income. Less-educated workers are falling further behind.
There are other threats. The economy is now a global enterprise. Off-shoring production has caused workers to lose their jobs as factories in the richer countries closed. The jobs go to low-wage countries.
But technology is the bigger threat. Artificial intelligence is the way machines will replace human workers. AI, as it is known, has the goal of thinking and performing like a human. There are times when AI does things people cannot do as well. There are other times when AI replaces workers.
It is not people with college degrees who face the most loss. It is the workers who have less education. Over time, the gap between the "haves" and the "have-nots" is growing. That is what worries economists.
For big business, the future is clear. Invest in technology. Machines are cheaper than people. There are heavy taxes on wages for workers and employers. However, companies often receive tax incentives to buy machines. They also do not get sick, take vacations or retire on pensions(退休金).
Experts are not sure about what to do. They agree that education and better job training are one direction to go. What kind of incentives will change some of the approaches to work Experts say employers should find ways to use AI to help workers, not replace them. There currently is no clear path to future prosperity for less-educated workers.
32. What may experts agree with
A. Technology does more harm than good to workers.
B. Economic growth has no connection with technology.
C. A controlled market is the best way to run an economy.
D. Technology causes more threats to less educated workers.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. AI's perfect skills. B. The great threat to AI.
C. Human workers' intelligence. D. The reason why AI is a threat to workers.
34. What does the underlined word “incentives” mean in paragraph 5
A. Rewards. B. Prices. C. Charges. D. Wages.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. AI concerns experts B. AI is replacing workers
C. AI is developing fast D. AI benefits all workers

As VOX—a classic record company—explains, the custom 57 (date)back to the early 20th century, when shellac records(虫胶唱片)first appeared in the market. The rates at 58 these records spun(旋转)varied, but 78 RPM(每分钟转数)quickly became the norm. When my father reported that he had just purchased a new house in new housing development, we were all overjoyed. For a long time, he had wished to purchase his own home. My parents had been living in several rental houses since they married. Finally, his dream had come true.
We began moving our belongings into our new home on a bright and sunny Sunday morning. My father hired a lorry to transfer our goods, and I was amazed at how much we had. The lorry had to make three journeys before most of our belongings arrived at our new home. I enjoyed sitting in the back of the lorry while it made the journeys. My parents, grandmother, elder sister, and I are the only members of our family. Nonetheless, the number of goods, both necessary and useless, was shocking.
We had a busy day loading the items onto the lorry and then unloading them at our new home, but that was not the end of the story. We had to move the things into the house and arrange them properly before we could call the house a home.
Our new house was a single—story house, the fourth in a row of identical houses. It contained three bedrooms, a living room, a dining room, two bathrooms, a small kitchen, a small front porch, and an even smaller garden. Modern houses are extremely narrow for room, but it was better than nothing. In any case, it was a significant improvement over our prior home, which was much smaller than the new one.
The kitchen was the first area we started organizing things. We needed to take care of our stomach before we could do any more work, so my mother set about creating her first meal in her brand-new kitchen, preparing the greatest tasting instant lunch I'd ever tasted.
We moved on to the rest of our belongings after lunch. My parents got the largest bedroom, my grandmother and sister got the second largest, and I got the tiniest, right close to the kitchen. I was totally overjoyed. For the first time in my life, I got my own room, and it even had a ceiling fan to keep me cool.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

M: My name is Bruce. I was born in Newcastle, not a big city, with a population of about 200,000, er…and it is located on the River Tyne, in the northeast of England, but not the Thames. There are five bridges over the River Tyne, and they link Newcastle to the next town Gateshead, where there is one of the biggest shopping centers in the world—the Metro Center. From the saying "Don't carry coal to Newcastle," as you know, a few years ago, the main industries were shipbuilding and coal-mining, but now the chemical and soap industries are more important. I moved from Newcastle ten years ago but I often return. I miss the people, who are so warm and friendly, and I miss the wild beautiful countryside near the city, where there are so many hills and streams. People who are born near the River Tyne have a special name. They are called "Georgies". I am very pleased to be a “Georgie”!

After moving into each other's room, we began to tidy up our belongings. But because most of the family were so tired that we almost had no energy left. We first moved in most of our furniture and larger items. My parents had the experience of moving house. They took charge of directing us to put things in place. My grandmother was old so we first clean up her room and made her at ease. My sister and I were responsible for most of the running work.
That evening, we enjoyed our first formal meal in the house. This meal had special meanings for the whole family. It was at our true home that we enjoyed our family reunion dinner. The new home was a safe harbor and a shelter. It gave us a sense of safety. By nine o'clock, I was in my new bedroom, which still smelled like new paint. I gladly lay on the bed, enjoying the feeling of moving home. It was fantastic. I quickly fell asleep in my new room.
