Christopher Thomas, 27, was a writer by night and a teacher by day when he noticed he was always tired and was losing weight fast. Diagnosed with diabetes (糖尿病), Thomas would need to inject himself with insulin (胰岛素) three times a day for the rest of his life or risk nerve damage, blindness, and even death. And if those weren't bad enough, he had no health insurance.
After a month of feeling upset, Thomas decided he'd better find a way to fight back. He left Canton, Michigan for New York, got a job to wait tables, nicknamed himself the Diabetic Rockstar, and created , a free online community for diabetics and their loved ones—a place where over 1,100 people share personal stories, information, and resources.
Jason Swencki's son Kody, was diagnosed with type diabetes at six. Father and son visit the online children's forums together most evenings. “Kody gets so excited, writing to kids from all over the world,” says Swencki, one of the site's volunteers. “They know what he's going through, so he doesn't feel alone.”
Kody is anything but alone: Diabetes is now the seventh leading cause of death in the United States, with 24 million diagnosed cases. And more people are being diagnosed at younger ages.
These days, Thomas' main focus is his charity, Fight It, which provides medicines and supplies to people—225 to date—who can't afford a diabetic's huge expenses. Fight It has raised about $23,000—in products and in cash. In May, Thomas will hold the first annual Diabetic Rockstar Festival in the Caribbean.
Even with a staff of 22 volunteers, Thomas often devotes up to 50 hours a week to his cause, while still doing his full time job to wait tables.“Of the diabetes charities out there, most are putting money into finding a cure,” says Bentley Gubar, one of Rockstar's original members. “But Christopher is the only person I know to say people need help now.”
21.What can we know about Thomas in the last paragraph
A.He works full time in a diabetes charity.
B.He employs 22 people for his website.
C.He helps diabetics in his own way.
D.Thomas tries to find a cure for diabetes.

B.It organizes parties for volunteers once a year.
C.It offers less expensive medicines to diabetics.
D.It owns a well known medical website.

This year the US will honour one of the country's most famous writers — Mark Twain (1835—1910). Most readers know that his real name was Samuel Longhome Clemens, but how many know where the pen name “Mark Twain” came from
The answer shows Clemens' colourful early life before he became a writer. “Mark Twain” was the cry shouted on a ship when the ship entered a part of a river that was two fathoms (6 feet) deep. “Twain” is an old fashioned way of saying “two”. Twain trained as a ship pilot on the Mississippi river for two years, a time that he wrote about in the humourous Life on the Mississippi (1883).
The famous river would become an important theme in many of his works — who could forget the journey of the Huck and Jim along it in his most famous book, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884)
With little education, he had to teach himself how to write stories. Whenever possible, he would go to public libraries. There he spent much time reading and thinking, which greatly helped him with his writing.
On the other hand, his life experiences gave him wonderful material to write about and attract readers. Twain wrote in a style that has been called “local colour” because it shows great knowledge of local people and their customs.
This gift is very clear in the two books for which Twain is still celebrated today. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its follow up The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which many people call “The Great American Novel”.
The most amazing invention in the book is the voice of Huck himself. Huck did not enjoy schooling. It shows in the way he uses language, in a spoken style. Only a master like Twain could copy the way a young southern boy talked so well.
25.According to the passage, what is the best part of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
A.The deep social meaning.
B.The exciting life experiences.
C.The special way that Huck talks.
D.The nice view of the Mississippi.
26.Which is the most suitable place in the passage for the sentence. “Twain did not come from the writer's background you might expect”?
A.At the beginning of Paragraph 2.
B.At the beginning of Paragraph 3.
C.At the beginning of Paragraph 4.
D.At the beginning of Paragraph 5.
27.What is the passage mainly about
A.Mark Twain's career as a great writer.
B.Mark Twain's interest in describing local life.
C.Mark Twain's achievements in American literature field.
D.Mark Twain's life experiences which influenced his writing.
28.What does the underlined word “gift” mean in the passage
A.Twain's talent for self teaching.
B.Twain's “local colour” writing style.
C.Twain's good sense of humour.
D.Twain's experiences as a ship pilot.

Think of London and you will probably remember the bright red double-decker buses. Think of Thailand's capital city, Bangkok, and the noisy tuk-tuks may come to mind. Think of San Francisco and you might see the city's cable cars.
Imagining what these cities would look like without those is difficult. They are symbols of these cities that make them different. However, these city symbols are not always so well loved by their city leaders. City leaders want what is best for their city, which often means the most modern transport.
In Bangkok, city leaders have banned (禁止) tuk-tuks because they consider them noisy and polluting. However, the ban has largely been unsuccessful as it has not changed Thai people's love for the cheap tuk-tuks over taxis.
In London the city's first ever mayor (市长) removed the red double-decker buses, which he thought were old fashioned. His plan worked, but Londoners were unhappy to lose the nice old buses they believed represented the best of their city. They made their unhappiness felt when the mayor came up for re-election. Most Londoners voted for his competitor, who promised to bring the bus back.
As for San Francisco, several cable cars are still in use but mainly as tourist attractions. They are too slow to be used for anything other than scenic trips.
City transport symbols may have a place in their city people's hearts, but it seems they are increasingly out of step with the modern world. As Londoners have proved, their continued life depends on people's willingness to fight for their survival.
29.Which proves the old city transport symbols are not loved by city leaders
A.Only a few cable cars are still in use in San Francisco.
B.Bangkok city leaders tried to remove the cheap tuk-tuks.
C.The mayor who sold double-decker buses lost the re-election.
D.The new mayor will bring back improved double-decker buses.
30.What can we infer from the passage
A.Modern cities should remove old city transport symbols.
B.The writer thinks highly of the old city transport symbols.
C.Old city transport symbols face the problem of survival.
D.Tourist cities will lose their attraction without the symbols.
31.What's the author's purpose of writing the first paragraph
A.To introduce some city transport symbols.
B.To explain why some cities are popular.
C.To talk about modern transport in some cities.
D.To attract more tourists to visit some cities.
32.The London double-decker bus is returning mainly because ________.
A.the new mayor loves it
B.Londoners fought for it
C.it is an improved transport
D.it is popular with tourists

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighbourhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks (盯着他们).
One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realised he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali's running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.
Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground.

参考范文:
Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead. Refusing to give up at this point, he jumped to his feet and ran as fast as he could. He dashed across the finishing line and won fourth prize. Thinking he would let her sister down, Ali couldn't help sobbing. Just then he suddenly heard the announcement from the broadcast that he won third prize as the runner who collided with Ali was disqualified for breaking the rule. Holding the shoes close to his chest during the award ceremony, Ali felt overjoyed and relieved as he eventually won the shoes for his sister.
Filled with pleasure,Ali walked home quickly. He could not wait to see his sister and share the good news. On his arrival, Ali found Zahra was waiting outside. Nervous and anxious, Zahra wondered whether her brother had brought her what she was expecting. “Zahra, see what I have got for you.” Ali said excitedly, taking the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The instant Zahra saw the shoes, her face lit up. So thrilled was she that she threw herself at Ali. “Thank you! Ali.” Tears of joy welled up in their eyes as the brother and the sister hugged tightly together.

M:It's almost vacation time. Have you found a summer job yet
W:No,I don't think I will work at the boy's camp where I worked last summer. Camp jobs don't pay much.
M:I think I can find a job at the Hollywood Hotel. A friend of mine was a waiter last summer. The pay wasn't good, but the tips were.
W:My sister worked there last summer, making beds and cleaning bathrooms. She didn't like it but she earned a lot of money.
M:That sounds really good.
W:Yes. And I want a job outside. After sitting in college classes all winter, I'd like a job in the open air.
M:The high school kids earn a lot of money every summer cutting grass. My brother is only fourteen, but he gets five dollars every time he cuts the grass, and it only takes him an hour. He just rides around on the machine that he bought, and the machine does all the work.
W:That's pretty good. I used to cut grass when I was in high school. But now I think I might work for a road-building company, or do something like that.
M:It could be a good experience. And you could earn a lot, too.
