Herman Melvile, the writer of the famous whale story Moby Dick, once wrote that humpback whales were “the most light hearted of all the whales.”Known to be intelligent animals and can be seen working together to hunt schools of small fish, humpbacks are a favourite of whale watchers everywhere. And, if you listen closely, you might even hear one singing.
Marine (海洋的) biologist Jim Darling has studied the songs of humpback whales for more than 25 years. While recording whale songs on a boat near Hawaii, he invited author Douglas Chadwick to experience diving with a humpback. In the water, Chadwick heard the whale's songs in a way he never heard them before. “Suddenly, I no longer heard the whale's voice in my ears,” he said. “I felt it inside my head and bones.” When swimming with the whale, Chadwick could see that the whale was aware of him, but not alarmed by his presence. Up in the boat, Darling recorded the whale's song, which can be long and complex, sometimes lasting for 30 minutes or more. Actually, they are perhaps the longest songs sung by any animal.
Darling says that only male humpbacks sing, but for unknown reasons, it was previously thought that they sang to attract females, but scientists showed this was incorrect when they played recordings of whale songs in the ocean and the female whales did not respond. Another idea is that male humpbacks compete with each other using songs, just as other male animals on land do using their horns or sharp teeth.
Researchers have also found that humpback whale songs are different in different parts of the world, perhaps like whale national songs. They may also be like hit tunes on the radio, changing over time—from one year to the next, or even over a single breeding season when they produce young.
Another member of the research team, photographer Flip Nicklin, recalls a special moment he had while interacting with a humpback. While he was snorkelling (潜水) some distance from the huge animal, it approached him until it was just a few metres away. It then gently carried Nicklin towards its eye with a flipper (鳍肢) , as if examine him. Obviously, the urge to understand a different species goes both ways.
21.What do Chadwick and Nicklin have in common
A.They were afraid of whales.
B.They swam with the whales.
C.Their jobs are to take photos of the whales.
D.They are marine biologists studying whales.
22.What is this passage mainly about
A.How to record the humpbacks in the ocean.
B.How humpbacks communicate with people.
C.Humpback whale songs and what they might mean.
D.The career of a man who is interested in humpbacks.
23.When the scientists played songs in the ocean, ________.
A.the songs attracted fish
B.no female whales came
C.male whales became angry
D.male and female whales came together
24.What is NOT true about humpback whales
A.Their songs are short and simple.
B.Only male humpback whales sing.
C.Humpback whales are very friendly.
D.They are popular with whale watchers.

When researching my book Stop & Drop Diet, I become more convinced (确信的) than ever just how important breakfast is. One study that researched seven years of data on 20,000 adults found that people who often skip breakfast weigh more and have a larger waist than those who start with a healthy meal.
But “healthy” is key: As I start reading labels of breakfast on café menus and supermarket shelves, I realize too many meals are high in calories but proper on protein. A balanced meal — say, an English muffin, almond butter, and Greek yogurt with fruit — keeps your blood sugar steady. When your blood sugar is balanced, you avoid energy crashes and snack attacks later in the day. University of Missouri researchers found that a high protein breakfast leads to less snacking throughout the day.
My second breakfast tip is to be aware of add ons and fillings. An omelet may seem like a great choice, but adding a tablespoon of each of tomato sauce, cooked spinach, and cooked mushrooms is just 8 calories, while just a tablespoon of each of other things adds up to 77 calories.
Finally, remember that breakfast plates can often be oversized. Instead of ordering restaurant combos (组合餐), which add up to large portions of bread, potatoes, meats, and eggs, order off the restaurant's menu. Choose portion controlled food at the café. The average café bagel is equal to four slices of bread! You'll be surprised that a smaller option can just make you full, especially when it is with a great protein source like Greek yogurt or a hard boiled egg.
Here, take a look at the shocking number of calories you save when you choose a smarter breakfast.
25.What can be learned about people who don't have breakfast in the study
A.They usually look older than people with a healthy breakfast.
B.They are usually as healthy as people with a healthy breakfast.
C.They usually weigh more than people with a healthy breakfast.
D.They are usually much thinner than people with a healthy breakfast.
26.What will happen if one doesn't have balanced blood sugar
A.He will suffer hunger and reach for snacks later.
B.He will suffer low blood pressure and heart attacks.
C.He will need food high in fat and low in protein.
D.He will still have enough energy for the day.
27.Why does the author remind us to be aware of add ons and fillings
A.Because they are usually rich in fat and low in protein.
B.Because they may spoil the nutrition of the original food.
C.Because what is added is usually full of harmful chemicals.
D.Because improper things added may provide extra calories.
28.What is the text mainly about
A.An introduction of Stop & Drop Diet.
B.The weakness of restaurant combos.
C.Tips on choosing a healthy breakfast.
D.The harm of missing breakfast to us.

While the temperature in Chicago on March 4, 2018 was 5 degrees, the water was even colder — 2 degrees. That didn't stop over 4,800 people on North Avenue Beach jumping into Lake Michigan.
The Chicago Polar Plunge is a yearly event to raise money for Special Olympics Chicago. Each of the participants (参与者) collects at least $200 from friends and family members to get the chance to jump into the lake's icy water. More than $1.5 million was raised for a great cause: Special Olympics Chicago and the over 7,500 athletes it serves.
Special Olympics, a nonprofit organization, was founded in 1968. The group's purpose is to provide athletic training and competition in 22 sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities (缺陷).
After some initial speeches, the first group of participants ran into the lake. Many of the participants were members of teams that dressed up in costumes (服装), including Minions and Waldo from the Where's Waldo book series.
Chloe Krecun, 12, from Chicago, was shaking when she got out of the water. “I can't feel my feet or fingers and my shoes are filled with water,” she said afterwards. But she would do it again to support the Special Olympic athletes.
As other participants headed towards the water to “take a plunge”, one of them shared why he participated in the event. “My cousin has benefited from the Special Olympics, so my family and I are here supporting him by plunging,” said Brandon Marty.
Brunida Cotton, a special education teacher, was also paying attention to the Special Olympics as she prepared to plunge. “It gives the athletes confidence; they belong to a team and they enjoy being able to do things other kids do,” Cotton said.
29.Why did Brandon Marty take part in the event
A.To support his cousin.

Last weekend, I went to Mark's new house near a forest for a little get together. After lunch when I was chatting with him and his wife Cody, he asked me, “Hey Thoran, have you ever been to a secret sport?” Before I could even finish saying no, Cody and Mark were already at the door with their jackets on. And the next moment we were heading out into the forest with a camera, a fishing net and a plastic bucket(桶).
We walked through the forest along a path by a small river. Breathing the fresh air, we three talked and laughed all the way.
“Hey! What are you guys doing?” Someone suddenly shouted from behind. Mark and Cody's eyes immediately widened, and without a word they started running. I had no choice but to follow them, getting my shoes wet and dirty with mud. We probably ran for 10 minutes before Mark and Cody slowed down. I stopped to catch my breath and asked, “ Who was that?”
Mark replied, “The most annoying neighbour ever. If he caught up with us, there's no telling what could happen. He is always making fun of us. I dislike him.” We kept walking on for a few more minutes. Then a beautiful lake appeared before our eyes.“Wow! Amazing!” I shouted and could hardly hold back my excitement. The lake was large and the water was deep and blue, looking so peaceful with tall trees around it.

参考范文:
Looking around, we saw a rubber boat floating by the shore. “How about going boating?” Mark asked. “Good idea.” So we three excitedly jumped onto the boat and rowed far out. I was thrilled to find so many fishes in the lake. Before I could say a word, Mark had cast the fishing net into the water. “Let's wait and see.” Mark smiled mysteriously. “Look this way. Let me take a photo of you two,” Cody said, taking out the camera. Hearing that, I quickly approached Mark. But all of a sudden I lost my balance and fell into the water.
“Help! Help! Help!” I was so frightened and cried for help. However, none of us could swim. Mark and Cody tried to pull me up from the water but in vain. Struggling in the water, I was almost exhausted when I felt myself lifted by someone. It was Mark's neighbour, who followed us there and saw what had happened. Without hesitation, he jumped into the water and I was saved.

(Text 8)
Your body, which has close relations with the food you eat,is the most important thing you own,so it needs proper treatment and proper nourishment. The old saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” is not as silly as some people think. The body needs fruit and vegetables because they contain vitamin C. Most people take extra vitamins in pill form, believing that these will make them healthy. But a good diet is made up of nourishing food and this gives all the vitamins you need. The body doesn't need or use extra vitamins, so why waste money on them
In the modern Western world, many people are too busy to bother about eating properly. They throw anything into their stomachs, eating hurriedly and carelessly. The list of illnesses caused or made worse by bad eating habits is frightening.
(Text 9)
