Which of the following is not a change that will be caused by the warming? (D)
What is the most effective way to reduce the warming? (A)
Which of the following statements is not true? (D)
Over 100 years ago, the American writer Mark Twain said, “Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.” Well, everyone’s still talking about the weather, but now, people are really trying to do something about it. Scientists and world leaders are working to reverse a long-term global climate trend.
It has become clear that the world is slowly warming up. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, the earth has warmed by about one degree Fahrenheit over the past 100 years.
This seemingly slight warming is causing big changes. Glaciers are retreating, and polar ice is getting thinner. If this trend continues, the oceans will rise. This will cause flooding in coastal areas and other problems.
What is less clear is what is causing global warming--- and what we can or should do about it. Some believe the warming is simply part of the world’s natural climate cycle. Earth has always experienced periods of warming and cooling.
If the warming is natural, then there may be little humans can do to stop it. We may just have to learn to live with warmer temperatures.
Many scientists and leaders contend, however, that the warming is caused by the greenhouse effect. This happens when gases in the atmosphere—especially carbon dioxide—trap the sun’s heat. Burning oil and other fuels release these gases into the atmosphere. Since such human activity is causing the warming, they say, we should change our ways.
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
What is the percentage of the people in America who are overweight? (B)
Which of the following is NOT the reason why American people want to take off fat? (A)
What can we learn from the passage? (C)
About 70 million American are trying to lose weight. That is almost one out of every three people in the United States. Some people go on diets. This means they eat less of certain foods, especially fat and sugar. Other people exercise with equipment, take diet pills, or even have surgery. Losing weight is hard work, and it can also cost a lot of money. So why do so many people in the United States want to lose weight?
Many people in the United States worry about not looking young and attractive. For many people, looking good also means being thin. Other people worry about their health. Many doctors say being overweight is not healthy. But, are Americans really fat?
Almost 30 million Americans weigh at least 20 percent more than their ideal weight. In fact, the United States is the most overweight country in the world.
Losing weight is hard work, but most people want to find a fast and easy way to take off fat. Bookstores sell lots of diet books. These books tell readers how to lose weight. Each year dozens of new books likes these are written. Each one promises to get rid of fat.

What does the author want to show by giving the example of basketball players? (C)
What is suggested to improve reading ability? (B)
What is the fun_ction of the experiments mentioned in the text? (D)
Some people have the feeling that nothing can be done about their poor reading ability. They feel hopeless about it. Can you learn to read better, or do you have to agree that nothing can be done about it?
For sure, people are different. You cannot expect to do everything as well as certain other people do. If all of the students in a class tried out for basketball, some would be very good players, other would be very poor, and many would be in between. Even the very poor players can become much better players if they are guided in the right way, and with plenty of practice. It is the same with reading. Some seem to enjoy reading and to read well without any special help. Others find reading a slow and tiring job. In between, there are all degrees of reading ability.
Many experiments have shown that every poor reader can improve him reading ability. In these experiments, the poor readers were given tests of reading ability. After some of the causes of their poor reading were discovered, they were given special instruction and practice in reading. After a few months, another test of the same kind was given. In nearly all cases, these people raised their reading scores.
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a real brain food? (D)
What is the key to high scores in your test? (B)
Which of the following statements is true? (C)
All over the world, people tend to believe certain foods can make you more intelligent. However, no “brain foods” are proven to increase intelligence, but scientists do have found a relationship between diet and a healthy brain. A poor diet can make it harder for you to think clearly or concentrate. On the other hand, eating the right foods energizes you to use your brain to its full potential. In fact, some foods are essential for providing your brain with what it needs to grow and fun_ction properly. Oily fish, such as mackerel and salmon, are especially good for your brain. The special fats contained in these fish allow young brains to develop. They also protect mature brains for memory loss. In addition to oily fish, you should incorporate lots of dark green leafy vegetables and colorful fruits into your diet. With plenty of these vitamins, your brain will be at its best.
Eating healthy is always good, but brain foods will help you most if you eat them regularly. In truth, there is no magic recipe for increasing intelligence. You’ll still have to study hard. The good news is that eating dish and fresh produce will make your study more effective.

Which of the following is right? (C)
English learners, especially self-taught learners, may have trouble understanding speeches by native speakers. The following ways might help improve their listening ability.
First of all, do things step by step. It is not good to listen to something which is too difficult for you. Better choose a suitable course and start with the first book. Go on to the second only after you are sure you understand the first one.
Second, stick to one course. Don’t change books often. Don’t be tired of your course just because another course seems to be more interesting.
Third, listen to the English news programs over the radio from time to time. Better to through the news in the Chinese-language newspaper first. That will make it easier for you to understand the English news on the radio.
Fourth, if you have time, listen to some interesting short stories in Special English from VOA, or other listening materials of the same level as that of your textbook.
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
What kinds of families are described in the passage? (D)
Who will take the main responsibility of raising children in the future? (D)
According to the passage, why are American families getting smaller? (C)
Great changes have taken place in family life because of the development of science and industry. In the past, when more American lived on farms, the typical family had many children. Parents and their children often lived with grandparents. Many times, uncles and aunts lived nearby. When industry became more important than agriculture in American life, families became smaller. This was due to the fact that industry required workers to move off the land whenever necessary. Large families could not be moved from place to place as smaller families could. At the present time, people tend to have smaller families.
In the future, because of the development in industry, a typical family will be required to move even more often than now, so families will be even smaller. The typical family may remain childless and consist only of a man and a woman. A small number of families may take raising children as their main job. At the same time they may also raise other people’s children, leaving those families free to move from job to job.
