Answer
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
Why did many people buy earphones? (C)
Which of the following statements is true? (B)
Which one is not suggested in the passage? (D)
A few years ago, cell phone users were in a panic. Reports suggested radio waves from cell phones caused brain cancer and other side effects. Many people bought earphones so they could keep their phones away from their heads.
Soon afterward, studies claimed that carrying a cell phone in your pocket would cause cancer to your liver and reproductive system. Lots of gimmicks appeared on the market claiming to make cell phones safer. Many cell phone users bought the gimmicks, hoping to avoid cancer.
Currently, no scientific evidence supports any of the claims that cell phones cause cancer. This does not mean that cell phones are 100 percent safe. All cell phones produce some radio waves and their long-term effects are still not clear. If you want to err on the side of caution, use earphones and also carry your phone away from your body.
Don’t forget that talking on your cell phone while driving distracts you and creates a bigger hazard—a deadly car accident. Turn off your cell phone while driving.
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
What is the probable reason why German car sales soar in March? (B)
What is the growth rate of the unemployment rate from January to February? (C)
Why will the Chinese investors benefit if they invest in Thailand? (B)
Germany:
Car sales in Germany, the world’s automobile-making giant, soared 40 percent year-on-year in March, said an official data released on Thursday. Germany’s VDA automobile federation said the new car sales rose to 401,000 in March in the biggest car market of Europe compared to the same month last year. The rise of the sales was partly thanks to the German governmental stimulus funds, which was earmarked earlier in January for used car replacement, totaling 1.5 billion Euros.
Japan:
Japan’s unemployment rate climbed to a three-year high of 4.4 percent in February as big companies took pains to cut jobs to fight global recession, the government said on Tuesday. The number of jobless people rose to 2.99 million, up 330,000 from a year ago and marked four straight months of increase, the Ministry of Internal Affairs said. The result follows a decline in the rate in January to 4.1 percent.
Thailand:
Thailand has planned a number of business activities to be implemented in the forthcoming months to attract investments form China as the Chinese government has offered a full support to Chinese businessmen seeking to invest overseas, including Thailand. Chinese investors will benefit if they invest in Thailand as the country is a gateway to other Southeast Asian countries.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
What is “blog”? (B)
Which of the following is not a fun_ction of blogs? (B)
How can a site reflect the blogger’s personality? (D)
The word “blog” gets its name from adding the letter “b” from “web” to the word “log”. It’s basically an online diary--- one that anyone can read by visiting your personal blog site. Free blog programs and personal blog sites are making blogs a popular trend.
Designing and owning a personal blog site may seem complicated. It’s a good thing that blog programs are user-friendly. Bloggers can decide on the look of their web site by choosing from predesigned blog templates. Changing the color or adding pictures to the chosen template allows a site to reflect the blogger’s personality.
The popularity of blogs in recent years has changed the way people record their thought. Publishing personal thoughts and opinions on the Internet is a new trend. Many people write about their daily activities or personal thoughts in their blogs. Others gibe their opinions on various web sites and provide the relevant web links. Almost all blogs contain a section where readers can leave their remarks for all to see.
Blogs provide a fresh new way for individuals to express themselves. Many people write blogs because they want to be heard and understood—by anyone who will listen. Other people use blogs as a way to vent.
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following passage.
What must nearly all companies do to develop? (D)
What do the savers do when they want their money back? (B)
How will these companies raise money? (B)
Large companies need a ay to reach the savings of the public at large. The same problem, on a smaller scale, faces practically every company trying to develop new products and create new jobs. There can be little prospect of raising the sort of sums needed from friends and people we know, and while banks may agree to provide short-term finance, they are generally unwilling to provide money on a permanent basis for long-term projects. So companies turn to the public, inviting people to lend them money, or take a share in the business in exchange for a share in the future profits. This they do by issuing stocks and shares in the business through the Stock Exchange. By doing so they can put into circulation the savings of individuals and institutions, both at home and abroad.
When the saver needs his money back, he sells his shares through a stockbroker to another saver who is trying to invest his money.
Many of the services needed both by industry and by each of us are provided by the government or by local authorities. Without hospitals, roads, electricity, telephones, and railways, governments could not fun_ction. All of these require continuous spending on new equipment and new development, if they are to serve us properly, requiring more money than is raised through taxes alone. The government, local authorities, and nationalized industries therefore frequently need to borrow money to finance major capital spending, and they, too, come to the Stock Exchange.

In the basement store, how much will the $300 evening dress be after ten days if it is still not sold? (C)
According to the passage, which of the following statement is true? (A)
American love bargains. Fifty years ago, items could be bargained for. That meant you could argue with the seller, and the seller might bring the price down. Nowadays, there are other ways to save money on purchases. One of these is to shop at a discount store, which usually sells products that have been widely advertised with the name of a recognized manufacturer. Another way to save money is to go to a basement store. There is a famous one in Boston, which attracts visitors from all over the world. On the day of a particular good sale, well-dressed people stand in line waiting fro the store to open. When the doors do open, the normally polite ladies in their fur coats and gentlemen in their suits push to get at the clothes first. This particular store sells clothes that originally were in very expensive shops. An evening dress with an original $1,000 price tag reappears in the basement store for $300. But that is not all --- the price of the dress is lowered by one-fourth every ten days. Careful shoppers will come back to the store again and again, waiting for the price to come down on the item they want. Of course, in the meantime it may be sold to someone else.

How often do the French touch each other during a 30-minute conversation? (B)
Which of the following is the country where hugging is less common? (C)
Which of the following is NOT the reason why people hug? (D)
Hugging is a way for us to show our love for each other. In the west, people hug for many different reasons. Families and friends sometimes hug just to show the other person they care. They many hug a loved one that they haven’t seen for a while, or hug someone who will be leaving fro a long period of time. Hugs are also given to comfort someone who is sad or to congratulate someone who has good news.
Hugging reduces tension and raises self-esteem. Scientists even found that hugging can have a positive effect on a person’s IQ!
Some Western cultures encourage hugging more than others. The French, for example, are some of the most affectionate people in the world. Researchers have observed that the French touch each other more than 100 times during a 30-minute conversation. Americans, however, typically only touch each other twice during the same time period. Italians and Greeks are known for giving lots of hugs. But British people, like American, tend to be a little more reserved about hugging.

W: Found trip or one-way?
M: One-way, please.
W: OK. You have two choices: Flight 5323 leaves at 6:25 a.m. and arrives in Cairo at 5:20 p.m. The other is a night flight leaving at 11:15 p.m. and arriving at 10:23 a.m. The night flight is cheaper.
M: Thanks. Please reserve for us the seat on the night flight.
W: OK. Two seats on the night flight. Anyway, you need to hand in part of the airfare to make the reservation for the seats. You know it is the rush hour for the planes. The seats are in great demand.
M: That’s quite all right. How much money need I hand in?
W: 30% of the total. Please fill in the form first.
