Kennedy School Newsletter
Hello to all the students, staff, and parents of Kennedy School. This is the last edition of the Newsletter for this school year, and I am sure that everyone is looking forward to the vacation. Congratulations to those students who are graduating and leaving us. We wish them all the best for the future. We look forward to seeing everybody else again after the vacation.
Three teachers are leaving us this year. Coach Roy Webster is retiring for health reasons, and he will be missed. He had the satisfaction this year of seeing one of his students win the Capetown Tennis Tournament. Congratulations to him and to Arthur Burney! Miss Young is also leaving us. She is getting married and moving to Grandview with her husband. Finally, our assistant principal, Mr. Nelson Collins, will move to his new job as principal of Thompson Secondary School. We will miss him here but congratulate him on his new job.
There have been several high points this year. We have already mentioned that Arthur Burney won the Capetown Tennis Tournament, a reward for his hard work at training. Also, Tony Moore won his age group of the Pottsville Marathon. Jean Simpkin won first prize in the Carson Short Story Competition. The school baseball team placed third in the inter-school competition, and our girl’s hockey team won the B grade competition in the Pottsville Hockey League. Congratulations to all our winners!
Our school garden won second place in the city garden competition. Thanks to all the hard work done by the volunteers. The drama club put on an excellent production of Romeo and Juliet, and the choir sang at several events for the city this year.
Classes will resume on September 3. Don’t forget that we have a change of school uniform for next year. Uniforms are available from Johnson’s Clothing Store. New uniforms should be worn as soon as possible, but old uniforms may be worn until the winter break.
Please have a fun and safe vacation!

①"Everything happens for the best," my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. "If you carry on, one day something good will happen. And you'll realize that it wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment."
②Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932. I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station and got turned down every time.
③In one studio, a kind lady told me that big stations couldn't risk hiring an inexperienced person. "Go out in the sticks and find a small station that'll give you a chance," she said.
④I thumbed home to Dixon, Illinois. While there was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me. But I wasn't hired.
⑤My disappointment must have shown. "Everything happens for the best," Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to job hunt. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.
⑥As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked aloud, "How can a fellow get to be a sports announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?" I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, "What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?" Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game.
⑦On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother's words: "If you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment."
⑧I often wonder what direction my life might have taken if I'd gotten the job at Montgomery Ward.

1. An elderly carpenter(木匠) was ready to retire. He told his employer-contractor(承包商) of his plans to leave the house-building business to live a more comfortable life with his wife and enjoy his family life. He would miss the paycheck each week, but he wanted to retire.
The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but over time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He used inferior(劣质的) materials. It was an unfortunate way to end a dedicated career.
When the carpenter finished his work, his employer came to inspect the house. Then he handed the front-door key to the carpenter and said, “ This is your house… my gift to you.”
The carpenter was shocked!
What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house, he would have done it all so differently.
So it is with us. We build our lives, a day at a time, often putting less than our best into the building. Then, with a shock, we realize we have to live in the house we have built. If we could do it over, we would do it much differently.
But, you cannot go back. You are the carpenter, and every day you hammer a nail, place a board, or erect a wall. Someone once said, “Life is a do-it-yourself project.” Your attitude, and the choices you make today, helps build the “house” you will live in tomorrow. Therefore, Build wisely!
1. The writer writes this story to tell us ________.
A. we should build wisely the “house” we will live in tomorrow
B. we should learn from the carpenter
C. the carpenter was very clever to finish his career
D. how cruel the contractor was to the carpenter
2.
I loved music when I was young. I learned to play the guitar at 11 and I wrote my first song four years later. My dream was to become a country singer.
After years of hard work, a record company was showing interest in me. One day during a trip to mountains, a friend offered me a bit of meth, a kind of drugs. I smoked it. And that was all that I thought about for the next year and a half. I couldn’t live without it.
When the police came to me, I looked like death. The first seven days in prison, I just slept. When I woke up on the eighth day, I had never known such shame and guilt. I walked down the hall to the pay phone. My mama is the sweetest person on the earth, and I knew this was going to break her heart. When I heard her voice on the phone, I told her where I was. She just said, “Son, don’t you know you can’t do anything to make me not love you?”
Her words gave me the confidence to face my trouble. And I also realized this was my chance to start a new life.
When people hear my words, I hope they will not make the same mistake as I have, but I do know that you can overcome almost anything, especially smoking drug. That’s why I share my story here.
1. The writer’s purpose in telling his story is to ____.
A. show the drugs’ danger B. thank his mother
C. warn his friends D. help other people
3.
Fat and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. “Football, tennis, cricket - anything with a round ball, I was useless,” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the one always made fun of in school gym classes in Devonshire, England.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first he went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to ride the bike along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set up his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength. At the age of 18, he ran his first marathon.
The following year he met John Ridgway and started to work as an instructor at Ridgway’s school of adventure(冒险) in Scotland, where he learnt about Ridgway’s cold-water exploits. Greatly interested, Saunders read all he could about North Pole explorers and adventures, he decided that this would be his future.
In 2001, after becoming a skillful skier, Saunders started his first long-distance expedition (探险)towards the North Pole. It took unbelievable energy. He suffered frostbite(冻伤), ran into a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit, pulling his sled up and over the rocky mountains.
Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he’s skied more of the North Pole by himself than any other British man. His old playmates would not believe the change.
1. What does the story mainly tell us about Saunders?
A. He is a success in sports. B. He is the youngest British skier.
C. He is Ridgway’s best student. D. He is a good instructor at school.
It was a Sunday and the heavy storm had lasted all night. The morning after the storm, though, was beautiful: blue skies, warm air and a calm, inviting sea.
My father realized it was a good day for fishing and invited my sister and me to go with him. I was only 14 and fishing had never been my thing, but I decided to go all the same. I’m so glad I did.
Being on the boat, we found there was something meters away. When moving nearer, we saw it was a mother whale with her baby. We couldn’t believe it — there aren’t any whales along the coast. The storm must have driven them there, where the sea water was so dirty that nothing could live in it.
The little baby whale — actually as big as our boat — was stuck and could not move. The mother went down into the water and came up suddenly, making big waves. “She’s trying to help her baby, but on the wrong side,” my father said. At this point, my father moved our boat to the other side and, heading the boat towards the baby whale, pushed it gently. With our several gentle pushes the baby whale turned over and disappeared under water. Then it swam up right beside its mum. They made great efforts to swim towards the deep sea but failed and started heading in the wrong direction. We hurried up to the whales and tried to lead them to the sea. Slowly, they let us lead them, sometimes rising from the water right beside us to breathe — and to give us a trusting look with those huge eyes. Once they hit their first part of clean water from the sea, the mum gave us a wave with her tail and off they swam into the deep sea.
In the excitement it had felt like only a few minutes, but we had been with those wonderful animals for almost an hour and a half. That was the simple and lasting beauty of the day. Today, I still look back to that golden day at sea.
1. By telling the story, the writer wants to tell us that ________.
A. saving lives makes people happy
B. it’s a good experience to go fishing
C. we should live with animals happily
D. keeping sea water clean is important
5. My name is Lin Hui. I like to tell stories about people who work together. What is even better is when countries help each other and build a good friendship. An excellent example of this happened when Britain and China worked together to bring the Milu deer back to China.
Milu deer, a kind of animal with large horns(角), used to be common in China long ago. Like other deer they lived together and ate grass and the soft parts of trees. Milu deer were often killed for food or sport. The Ming and Qing dynasties(朝代) did not protect them and many were killed. That is how the Milu deer disappeared from China.
Luckily before all of them were killed, some were taken to Britain to improve the environment of the beautiful park which belonged to the Duke of Bedford. He liked them so much that he took them from China to Britain. Milu deer liked the cool, wet weather in England and their number increased year by year. As a result, when in 1985 the government of China wanted to bring back the Milu deer, the Duke of Bedford was able to help. The first deer came back to China to the Nanhaizi Milu Park 20 kilometers south of Beijing and the centre in Dafeng, Jiangsu province.
The deer certainly seem happy to be back in China because their number has grown quickly. There are now so many of them that a new park has been opened for them in Hubei Province. At the moment the Milu deer live in centres where they are being well protected and cared for. It is hoped that one day there will be enough animals to let them live in the wild again.
1.What’s the best title of the passage?
A. The number of the Mulu deer. B. The life of the Milu deer.
C. The return of the Milu deer. D. The importance of the Milu deer.

She was only about five feet tall and probably never weighed more than 110 pounds, but Miss Bessie was a towering presence in the classroom. She was the only woman tough enough to make me read Beowulf and think for a few stupid days that I liked it. From 1938 to 1942, she taught me English, history — and a lot more than I realized.
I shall never forget the day she scolded (批评) me into reading Beowulf. “But Miss Bessie,” I complained, “I ain’t much interested in it.”
Her large brown eyes became sharp. “Boy,” she said, “how dare you say ‘ain’t’ to me! I’ve taught you better than that.”
“Miss Bessie,” I said, “I’m trying to join the football team, and if I go around saying ‘it isn’t’ and ‘they aren’t,’ the guys are gonna laugh me off the team.”
“Boy,” she replied, “you’ll play football because you have guts (勇气). But do you know what really takes guts? Refusing to lower your standards to those of the crowd. It takes guts to say you’ve got to live and be somebody fifty years after all the football games are over.”
I started saying “it isn’t” and “they aren’t,” and I still joined the team without losing my friends’ respect.
Negroes, as we were called then, were not allowed in the town library, except to sweep floors or clean tables. But with the help of some nice whites, Miss Bessie kept getting books out of the white library. That is how she introduced me to the Bront?s, Byron and Keats. “If you don’t read, you can’t write, and if you can’t write, you might as well stop dreaming,” Miss Bessie once told me.
So I read whatever Miss Bessie told me to, and tried to remember the things she insisted that I store away. It could be embarrassing to be unprepared when Miss Bessie said, “Get up and tell the class who Frances Perkins is and what you think about her.” Forty-five years later, I can still recite her “truths to live by”.
Miss Bessie noticed things that had nothing to do with schoolwork, but were essential(必不可少的) to a youngster’s development. Once a few classmates made fun of my worn-out hand-me-down overcoat. As I was leaving school, Miss Bessie patted me on the back of that old overcoat and said, “Carl, never worry about what you don’t have. Just make the most of what you do have — a brain.”
No child can get all the necessary support at home, and millions of poor children get no support at all. This is what makes a wise, educated, warm-hearted teacher like Miss Bessie so essential to the minds, hearts and souls of this country’s children.
1. Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?
A. Dreams Go with Education B. An Unforgettable Lesson
C. Unforgettable Miss Bessie D. Reading Makes a Full Man

Eddy was a bully. He loved to show off how smart he was to the boys in his group.
They would stand in front of the school every morning and watch the other children come in. One small boy at the school was called William. They would call out to him “Good morning, Silly Willy!”
One day, Eddy said to the other boys, “Watch this. I’ll show you how stupid Silly Willy is!”
He called William and showed him two coins: a large coin worth twenty-five cents and a small coin worth one dollar.
“Which one would you like?” he asked William.
William looked at the two coins.
“Go on,” said Eddy. “You can take one and keep it.”
William looked at all the other boys. They were all watching him. He took the large coin. Then he went into the school.
Eddy laughed and said to his friends, “He thinks the coin worth twenty-five cents is better because it is bigger. He doesn’t realize that the one dollar coin is worth much more. Ha!”
All the boys laughed and talked about how stupid William was. They thought it was very funny.
The next day they did it again, and William chose the large coin again. They all laughed. They continued this trick for several days. Sometimes Eddy did it, and sometimes the other boys in his group did it. But every day William chose the twenty-five cent coin.
After ten days, one of the boys in the group started to feel sorry for William. When he was sure nobody was near, he told William about the trick.
“Eddy and the other boys are tricking you,” he said. “They laugh at you because you take the twenty-five cent coin. Even though the one-dollar coin is smaller, it is worth more. Tomorrow, take the small coin.”

Do you know Liu Wei? At the age of 10, he lost his arms by accident. However, by working hard, he learnt to take care of himself with his feet. It’s a piece of cake for him to dress himself and writing with toes now. When he was 19, he started learning to play the piano with his toes. It was a hard time to practice it for seven hours every day, but he finally achieved his dream. He once said: There are only two ways for me to go, hurry to die, or to live a wonderful life.
You see, the thing is wonderful or terrible that is not depending on the thing itself but how you look upon it. We should learn to Liu Wei how to face the challenge with strong wills. Let’s enjoy the life from now.

It was a winter evening, nearly 7 o’clock. I worked late at school. I was really tired. However, my son was still waiting for me to make dinner for him. I felt very sorry that I left him alone at home. So, I hurried home. It was a crossing. A car went past me in a twinkle of an eye. It ran very fast and so close to my body; hit my arm and my handbag dropped on the ground. I was so frightened that I couldn’t move. Luckily, I was not badly hurt. But you know what made me angry? The driver didn’t even stop to say sorry to me. He drove away. So be careful next time, both passengers and drivers.

“Will you take me trick-or-treating , Chad?” Zoe asked; she was already wearing her angel wings.
“Mom’s taking you,” I said.
“Mommy hurt her legs.”
“I have plans with my friends,” I said. We planned to race around the neighborhood to collect as much candy as we could, not considering costumes too much.
“Please, Chad,” Zoe begged.
“Fine.”
Later, Zoe skipped (轻快地跳) up the walk to the first house while I hung back. “I don’t want anyone knowing that I’m taking you trick-or-treating,” I said to her.
So she went to the door alone and called, “Trick or treat!”
The door opened. A woman stepped out. “You are so cute, but are you alone?” she asked, looking around worriedly.
“No.” Zoe pointed at my hiding place. Oh no, I thought. She’s going to announce me to the world.
“Can he have a candy bar, too, please?” Zoe asked instead.
The woman laughed. “Catch!” A candy bar sailed toward me.
“Thanks,” I called.
I thanked Zoe, too. “That’s what angels do,” she said. And she always asked for candy for me at every house.
At the last house, an ugly giant (巨人) sat on a chair in the corner. “I’m afraid,” Zoe said to me. If I went with her I would be seen by others. But after a quick check for my friends, I said, “OK, let’s go.”
“Happy Halloween,” the giant said gently. To our surprise, he was Mr. Gordy in costume.
“Thank you, Mr. Giant,” Zoe said.
“You’re welcome, little angel.” Then Mr. Gordy turned to me. “Why aren’t you in costume, son?”
“Chad is in costume!” Zoe insisted before I could open my mouth. “He’s my superhero!”
All of a sudden, I felt so proud. On our way home, we ran into my friend Jeff.

Heavy favorite surprised happy own willing hungry
2. What do you think of Madelynne?
___________________________________________________
3. Answer the questions.
Every year at Halloween, American kids of all ages go trick-or-treating. They hope to bring home as much candy as possible. Twelve-year-old Madelynne Caralli goes trick-or-treating, too. She’s ________ to get candy. But she really wants food. She trick-or-treats for donations to give to __________ people.
Her project began several years ago. When she read a book about children who volunteer in their neighborhoods, she decided to collect food for a food bank. “My mom explained to me that there are people who don’t have any food, and I wanted to help them,” she explains.
Madelynne and her mother visited the food bank website to find out what kinds of food were needed. Then they got in touch with people in their neighborhood and told them that Madelynne would be looking for donations at Halloween. She and her mother suggested things like canned soups — food that can be stored for a long time.
On the night she trick-or-treats, Madelynne puts on her costume and walks through the neighborhood collecting food. She says she’s been________ to see how much food people are ________to give. Last Halloween, “some people gave so much that the bags were breaking,” she says.
In the past four years, she has collected a total of 645 pounds of food. That amount of food helped feed 16 families for a week! She doesn’t carry all the food herself. Her friend Jordyn helps her carry the_________ bags. After Halloween, Madelynne and her mother take the food to the food bank. There it is sorted and then given to people who need it. This year, she plans on trick-or-treating in her grandmother’s neighborhood as well as her own.
The neighbors also give her candy for her________ trick-or-treating bag. But according to Madelynne, her ________ part of the Halloween is not the candy. It’s “the feeling that I’m helping people”.
1. Why does Madelynne want food at Halloween?
A. Because she doesn’t like candy.
B. Because she wishes to help hungry people.
C. Because she hopes to be different from other kids.
D. Because she wants to remind people not to waste food.
2. Madelynne started the project after she _____.
A. visited the food bank website
B. read a book about some volunteer children
C. got in touch with people in her neighborhood
D. knew many people didn’t have any food at Halloween
3. This year, Madelynne plans to _____.
A. prepare more bags to hold food
B. collect food as well as ask for candy
C. ask her friend Jordyn to help her carry the food
D. look for donations in her grandmother’s neighborhood too
4. We can infer from the text that Madelynne _____.
A. wanted people to donate food which is delicious
B. asked her mother for company when collecting food
C. gave food to people in need directly after Halloween
D. didn’t expect people would donate that much food

I was sitting in a train, waiting for it to start. Across from me sat a small boy, asking questions as children do. He asked his mother, "When will the train start?" I saw my chance and volunteered to answer. I said, "The train will start when we start pushing." The child opened his big eyes in surprise, "Really?" "Of course," I said. "Unless we push, it doesn't start." "Then let's push," he exclaimed. "Just a minute," I said. "The passengers are not all on. I'll tell you when to push." I watched for the signal light at the station and heard the station master's shrill whistle. Then I shouted to the boy, "Now! Push for all you're worth." He and I started to push in the direction of the engine. We pushed and pushed against the back of the seat .... and soon a satisfied smile lit up the boy's face. The train was moving ... very slowly at first, but then getting speed little by little. I congratulated the kid on his success. "We DID it! We DID it!
"Wasn't that great?" he exclaimed. He looked very pleased with himself. He was travelling in a train he had helped to start. I did not have the heart to tell him about the large engine operating in front. Someday he would find out for himself...
