It’s very important to keep your hair healthy. Here are five ways for you.

Good fats are also called necessary fatty acids which the body can’t produce naturally. Eating these types of fats will help improve healthy skins, nails, teeth, and hair. They can be found in the form of oil, or in food such as seeds, nuts.
12
Hair is nothing more than dead protein(蛋白质). But that doesn’t mean it is not important. A lack of it can cause slow growth and thinning, while on the contrary, getting enough amounts can help growth. Good choices to include in the diet would be eggs, meats, tofu, fish and beans.
13
There are a handful of vitamins that have been known to be effective for healthy hair. Some of them include vitamins A, B, C and E, and iron. Other than in extra form, these nutrients can also be found naturally in fruits, peppers, low-fat dairy products, green vegetables and whole grains. A large salad can be made with the inclusion of a lot of these foods.
14
Getting enough exercise can help improve hair growth. Aim to get at least 20-30 minutes of exercise every day. It can be walking, jogging, weight training, biking.
15
Right after you brush your teeth, brush your hair as well. Brushing hair fifty to one hundred strokes before bed can help remove pollutants and dirt while also stimulating circulation. Also, natural oils are released which will add more sheen(光彩)and oxygen to your hair.
Take your vitamins. B. Remember to brush before bed. C. Wash your hair now and then. D. Get your protein. E. Exercise is very important. F. Eat good fats.

Many years ago, I saw a homeless woman in thin clothes entering the student public room. She started coughing when she sat down on a sofa. Clearly, she wasn’t well. Without thinking too much about it, I went to the Student Affairs Office where I knew I could find clothes in the “Lost and Found” box. I gathered her up all clothes and as I made my way back, a co-worker warned me not to help this person because it would only lead to her wanting more help. I ignored(忽视) her warnings and carried on.
Two weeks later, a lovely elderly man came to my office and asked to speak with me in private. Curious, I gave him my full attention. He went on to tell me that he had overheard (无意听到) the conversation with the co-worker about helping the painful woman. He wanted me to know that it was always okay to help people, and that was why he wanted to give me a check for $1000! I burst into tears, because I really needed the money at the time, but also because I had never been recognized(认出) in such a way for helping someone! We became good friends and, twenty years later, he even offered me $ 120,000 to buy my dream house.
I asked him what made him offer me such a large present. He said it was because I was a “giver” and that I deserved(值得) it. I was able to own the perfect little home for me, all because one day I helped a homeless woman without thinking too much.

Unlike the other parts of the body, your ears don't ask for much. They don't need to be brushed twice a day like your teeth. But they really need some special care, especially if you like using earphones(耳机) to listen to music. Maybe your mum or dad has told you, “Turn that down before you go deaf(聋的)!” Well, they are quite right. Loud noise may cause hearing problems for a short time or even forever.

I always wanted to be the best, and one way of feeling good about myself was to see how much better I was than others. There was only one problem with this. When I saw they were better than me, I felt terrible. Now I compare me with myself. I ask myself if I do things as well as I could.

When I was young, I often failed to start things I expect to do because I thought they’d taken too long to finish. I always wanted to write a book, for example. As a young child, you try many new things. If you fail, you try again and again until you learn. But at school you are usually encouraged to do things right. Facts about hot and cold places on Earth!
The Sahara Desert (撒哈拉沙漠)
The Sahara Desert in North Africa is one of the largest and hottest deserts in the world. In the summer the temperature during the day often reaches 40℃. The highest temperature ever was 58℃! It seldom rains in the Sahara, but there are storms — sand storms!
The Sahara Desert is a very difficult place for humans to live. Only a few plants are able to grow in the dry climate (气候). But there are many oases. An oasis is a place where plants and trees can grow because there is water. There are about 90 large oases in the Sahara, where people have built villages. Some animals are able to live in the desert too. The most famous desert animals are, of course, camels. They can live for many days without food or water.
Antarctica (南极洲)
Antarctica is a continent (洲) which is under almost 2 kilometers of ice. The South Pole is in Antarctica and is the most southern place on Earth. It is always very cold. In the winter the temperature falls to -80℃! People have never lived there for long because it is too cold. There are scientists, but they only stay for a few months.
In Antarctica animals and plants can’t live easily on the land, but the sea is full of creatures (生物).
Many different kinds of penguins (企鹅) and seals (海豹) live there all year. They spend most of their lives swimming in the freezing Antarctica water. The sea provides lots of food for them because it is full of fish and sea life. The largest seals in the world lives in Antarctica. They’re called elephant seals.

What is time Is it a thing to be saved or spent or wasted, like money Or is it something we have no control over, like the weather Is it the same all over the world That’s an easy question. A minute is 60 seconds, an hour is 60 minutes, and so forth. Well, maybe. But in America, “Time is money.”
Because Americans believe time is a limited resource, they try to keep and manage it. People in the US often attend meetings or read books on time management. It seems that they all want to organize their time better. People try their best to press more life out of their time.
To Americans, being on time is a way of showing respect for other people’s time. Being more than 10 minutes late usually calls for an apology and an explanation. People who are running late often call ahead to let others know that they can’t be on time. Of course, the less formal(正式的), the less important it is to be exactly on time. At informal get-togethers, for example.
American lifestyles show how much people respect the time of others. When people plan an event, they often set the time days or weeks before it. Once the time is fixed, it is almost impossible to change it. If people want to come to your house for a friendly visit, people seldom call others late at night for fear they might be in bed. The time may be different, but most people think twice about calling after 10:00 pm.
Even Americans would agree that no one can master time. Time, like money, slips all too easily through our fingers. And time is very hard to predict. However, time is one of life’s most valuable gifts.

A natural resource is anything people can use which comes from nature. People can not make natural resources, but get them from the earth. Examples of natural resources are air, water, copper, wood, oil, wind energy, hydro-electric energy, iron and coal. Refined(精炼的) oil is not a natural resource because people make it.
We often say that we can divide natural resources into two different groups: renewable resources and non-renewable resources.
A renewable resource can grow again and come back again after we use it. For example, soil, sunlight, water and wood are renewable resources.
A non-renewable resource is a resource that can not grow or come back, or a resource that will take a very long time to come back. For example, coal is a non-renewable resource. When we use more coal, there will be less coal afterward. One day, there will be no coal to make goods. The non-renewable resource can be used up directly, or we can find a renewable resource to replace it. It is important to save non-renewable resources, because if we use them too quickly, there will be not enough in the future.
Most natural resources are limited. This means that they will run out. But a perpetual(长久的;无尽的) resource won’t. Some examples of perpetual resources include solar energy, tidal(潮汐的) energy and wind energy. Other examples are salt, stone and diamonds.
根据上面短文的内容回答问题(每个小题答案不超过6个单词)。

In ancient Egypt, women did not go out to work. They stayed and worked at home. Many Egyptian men were farmers. Some men were builders or fishermen. Other men worked as artists. Some other important people did not do any farming.
The weather in Egypt was very hot. Ancient Egyptians did not wear many clothes. Men, women and children often wore simple robes made of thin cloth. On their feet they wore light open shoes. People, including women, shaved (剃) hair from their heads to keep cool.
Children in ancient Egypt grew up to do the same jobs as their parents. Girls stayed at home with their mothers. They learned to look after the home. Boys worked with their fathers. They learned to do the jobs their fathers did. They only went to school to learn to write if they wanted to become a scribe
Many of the games played by ancient Egyptians are similar to games we still play today. Children played racing and jumping games. They also played ball games and with wooden toys. Older children played a game like chess.
The kings of Egypt (the pharaohs) had enough power to master their country. The people thought that the pharaoh was a god. He owned everything. Everyone had to do what he told them to do. The pharaohs built huge tombs. When a pharaoh died, he was buried in the tomb. The tombs were often in the shape of pyramids. When a pharaoh was buried, he was surrounded by treasure and by things to help him in the next world, such as food, clothes, furniture and weapons.

My First Marathon
A month before my first marathon, one of my knees was hurt and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I decided to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher asked us to run laps and then hit a ball. I didn’t do either well. He later told me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a fight against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the fight against my own body and mind.
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating(流汗) all over, but ready to face the challenge.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces became undone. So I stopped to tie them again. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and my knee hurt badly. Though feeling very painful, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was quite hungry and thirsty!
As I drew closer to mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my cost on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in the first place had.
Decide to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(标签), I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.
11.The writer started running in his 30s because ________.
he would like to show he was good at sports
he hoped to change his P.E. teacher’s opinion
he wanted to challenge his own body and mind
he wished to become the winner of marathon
12.It can be inferred from Paragraph 4 that the writer was ________ before marathon.

Do you ever feel no one really understands you Well, “Pepper”, a robot could change all that. Pepper is the first robot to read human’s feelings. Using its emotional recognition functions, Pepper can react to people when it is close to them----making jokes, dancing and even singing in Japanese.
The man-like robot looks like a small girl. It is four-feet tall with a table computer set to its chest. It has human-like hands, a girl-like body and baby-like voice. It was shown to curious people in Tokyo stores on Friday by Softbank, a Japanese robotics company.
Pepper can examine facial expressions(面部表情),human voice and signs, then make an answer. Pepper is designed to be a family robot, but it isn’t like Rosie who can do housework on the cartoon. Pepper is used at home or in the store, where we provide fun and entertainment.
Pepper gets power from love inside a family. Not only is he making jokes, making them laugh, also it helps people when they are in trouble. In a natural accident, it can help make those people who are sad or lonely feel relaxed, encourage them or make them laugh.
Pepper was on sale in Japan for around $2,000 in February 2019. For now, several Peppers are at Softbank stores in Tokyo for people to visit. The creators say before selling Peppers, they want the robots to store more knowledge, so it can get along better with humans.

Many companies today hold meetings to discuss their new plans. As people are paying more attention to the environment problems, more companies are looking for ways to reduce their bad influence on the environment. Many of them achieve this by using web meeting.
Web meeting is a technology that allows people to communicate better over the Internet. It’s an easy way of hosting and attending a meeting. Participants(与会者) don’t have to leave the office. Each of them will receive an invitation with the meeting time and date on it. When the meeting is ready to begin, they must sit before their computers.
With web meeting, all participants can attend the meeting at their own desks. They don’t need to drive a car to travel to and from the meeting. As a result, no fuel(燃料) is used and less time is taken up in attending a web meeting.
Materials for the meeting are simply e-mailed to all the participants before it begins. Then participants can just read them on the screen. For the company, this not only saves the use of paper but also greatly reduces the mailing cost.
As a meeting hall is not used, the only power for a web meeting is the power that is used by the computers. Besides, organized don’t have to pay for food or accommodation(住宿)for the participants. All this means that less energy is used.
In a word, web meeting is a cheaper, greener, and more friendly way of hosting and attending a panies that hold web meetings are willing to work hard for a better environment. So they can more easily find their working partners who have the same green ideas. In return, they develop good relationship with other companies and improve their business.

Ernest Hemingway, the son of a doctor and a music teacher, was born in 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois. Hemingway’s father 1 (teach) him early on how to hunt and fish, two activities Hemingway loved throughout his life. Instead of 2 (go) to college, Hemingway became a reporter for the Kansas City Star.
Later, in Europe, he worked as a driver 3 the Italian army until he was wounded and shipped home, where he again wrote for newspapers. Two years 4 , he moved to Paris, where he hoped to improve his writing. There he became friends with other 5 (America) writers, including Gertrude Stein and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Hemingway developed 6 style of writing that was simple and direct. He chose words sparingly(俭省地), avoided using adjectives, and trusted the reader to understand the 7 (mean) of his writing. As he put it, “I always try 8 (write) on the principle(原则) of the iceberg(冰山). There is seven eighths of it under water for every part that shows. ” This style continues to influence writers today. In his career(生涯), which lasted some 40 years, Hemingway earned the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize. He was one of the finest writers of the 9 (twenty) century.
For a while Ernest Hemingway lived in Key West, Florida, where he had nearly 50 cats. One of them was a cat with six toes(脚趾), which a ship’s captain had given him. Flowers bloom(开花) only if they are planted in rich soil(土壤). We are similarly influenced by our environment. When our environment is bad, we may get sick physically or mentally. When our environment is supportive, we are more likely to thrive.
Which factor(因素) of the environment influences us most The answer is surprising. It’s not the air we breathe every minute, nor the water we drink every hour; it’s the people who we relate to every day. Every day we have connections with a lot of people in different situations. Some bring us happiness and provide us with loving support. Others bring us down and make us feel worthless.
I have no doubt that one of the main keys to success is the people we know. It’s nice to have people in your life who encourage you to better yourself, who support you in your effort to make yourself a better person, whose hearts are big enough to be happy for your success, rather than those who are so proud that they always want to compete with you for success, who see the potential(潜力) in you, even when you can’t see it in yourself. These are the people you should have on your team and in your life.
So if you really long for success, look back at the people who come in and out of your life. Are most of the people you know supportive or unsupportive When people around you aren’t supportive, what kind of person do you become Do you become shy, fearful, hateful and unhappy When you connect with those who are supportive, what happens to you Do you become open, lively, happy, strong and brave
Taylor loves music, and her dream is to become a singer one day. Whenever she talks about her big dream, none of her friends ever give her a fist bump(碰拳) to encourage her. Taylor always complains that her friends are not supportive enough but walking away from them leaves her in loneliness. She has no better choice but to keep hanging out with them. However, the more time she spends with them, the worse she feels about herself.
We can all make a mindful decision about the environment around us. Relate more to those who make you happy being “you”, or who support you in being “you”. If you have to be around those who aren’t supportive, then simply accept them as they are, without going after them for more than what they can provide to you.
After all, each person has a seed(种子) in them to be the beautiful and awesome person they want to be. All they’re waiting for is that supportive soil to allow them to fully bloom.

A.She needs to get a fist bump from her friends.
B.She needs to keep hanging out with her friends.

Give yourself a test. Which way is the wind blowing How many kinds of wildflowers can be seen from your front door If your awareness is as sharp as it could be, you’ll have no trouble answering these questions.
Most of us observed much more as children than we do as adults. A child’s day is filled with fascination, newness and wonder. Curiosity gave us all a natural awareness. But distinctions that were sharp to us as children become unclear; we are numb (麻木的) to new stimulation (刺激), new ideas. Relearning the art of seeing the world around us is quite simple, although it takes practice and requires breaking some bad habits.
The first step in awakening senses is to stop predicting what we are going to see and feel before it occurs. This blocks awareness. One chilly night when I was hiking in the Rocky Mountains with some students, I mentioned that we were going to cross a mountain stream. The students began complaining about how cold it would be. We reached the stream, and they unwillingly walked ahead. They were almost knee-deep when they realized it was a hot spring. Later they all admitted they’d felt cold water at first.
Another block to awareness is the obsession (痴迷) many of us have with naming things. I saw bird watchers who spotted a bird, immediately looked it up in field guides, and said, a “ruby-crowned kinglet” and checked it off. They no longer paid attention to the bird and never learned what it was doing.
The pressures of “time” and “destination” are further blocks to awareness. I encountered many hikers who were headed to a distant camp-ground with just enough time to get there before dark. It seldom occurred to them to wander a bit, to take a moment to see what’s around them. I asked them what they’d seen. “Oh, a few birds,” they said. They seemed bent on their destinations.
Nature seems to unfold to people who watch and wait. Next time you take a walk, no matter where it is, take in all the sights, sounds and sensations. Wander in this frame of mind and you will open a new dimension to your life.

Many Chinese children are often asked what they want to be when they grow up. It’s the same in many other countries, but the results are quite different.
1,000 boys and girls aged between two and twelve in the UK have been asked the same question recently. The result shows the future health of Britain is in safe hands—Most children chose doctor as the best job, ahead of (在……前面)teacher, actor and scientist.
The research was conducted by Mothercare, a British retailer (零售商) which specializes in(专门经营) products for mothers-to-be (准妈妈) and children up to 8 years old. While it shows most children dream of becoming doctors when they grow up, nurse, firefighter and musician, have also made the list of top ten jobs. Surprisingly, more boys dream of becoming dancers than girls while girls like football boots better than ballet shoes.
When they were asked what was the most important part of a job, many children (34%) said that “having fun” and “helping others” were more important than being rich and famous. It explains why only 1% of the children wanted to be a celebrity (名人) or reality TV star. 8% of boys said that they would most like to become dancers, perhaps taking inspiration (鼓舞) from some popular TV dance competitions such as Strictly Come Dancing and Got To Dance.
However, lawyer did not appear on any of the lists. As you know, lawyer was a popular choice for children in the past.
The survey marks the launch (启动) of Mothercare’s “Born To” series for Save the Children. Save the Children is the world’s independent charity for children in need. For every item in the “Born To” series sold, Mothercare will donate£1 to the charity.

A group of Canadian kids are spreading a bit of Christmas spirit in Halifax, Nova Scotia, by covering warm clothes around light poles(灯杆) for the city’s homeless people to pick up and use. It was such an unusual sight that locals stopped to take pictures to share on social media(媒体).
Every year, Tara Atkins-Smith collects warm clothes from her community in order to help the less lucky. This year, since the family was traveling to Halifax with their daughter Jayda and seven of her friends to celebrate her 8th birthday, Tara thought it was the perfect time to teach the children a valuable life lesson.
The kids spent time handing out coats to the homeless and tied the rest around light poles for others to pick up. Each of the clothes had a card that read, “I am not lost. If you are caught in the cold, please take me to keep warm.” According to Tara, the experience helped the children better understand the difficult situation of homeless people, who have to brave the cold winter on the streets. “When we got back in the car after an hour on the street, they were all freezing cold and crying for the heater to be on because they were cold.” She said.
By next morning, all the jackets, gloves, and scarves on the poles were gone. Photos of the encouraging project have been shared about 8,000 times on Facebook, and have got over 10,000 likes. Tara, who did something similar in Toronto in December last year, says she’s already planning next year’s coat drive. She hopes that the meaningful thing can spread around the world, and she also wants to add $5 fast food gift card so that the homeless people can also enjoy a hot meal.

Noah Webster was born on October 16,1758, in the West Division of Hartford, where his father farmed and worded as a weaver. His mother was a housewife.
Few people went to college at that time, but Noah loved so much to learn that his parents let him go to Yale, Connecticut's only college. Noah graduated in 1778. He desired(渴望) to study law, but his parents didn't have more money to send him to school. So, in order to make a living, Noah taught in Glastonbury, Hartford and West Hartford. Later he studied law.
Noah did not like American schools. Sometimes 70 children of all ages were crammed(挤满) into one room schoolhouses with poor books and untrained teachers. Their books came from England. Noah thought that Americans should learn from American books, so in 1783, Noah wrote his own textbook. A Grammatical institute of the English Language. Most people called it the “Blue Backed Speller” because of its blue cover.
For 100 years, Noah’ book taught children how to read, spell, and pronounce words. It was the most popular American book of its time. Ben Franklin used Noah’s book to teach his granddaughter to read.
When Noah was 43, he started writing the first American dictionary. He did that because Americans in different parts of the country spelled, pronounced and used words differently. He thought that all Americans should speak in the same way. He also thought that Americans should not speak and spell just like the English. Noah used American spellings like color instead of the English colour and music instead of musick. He also added American words that weren't in English dictionaries like skunk and squash. He spent over 27 years writing his dictionary. When Noah finished his dictionary in 1828, at the age of 70, the first American dictionary came out. It had 70, 000 words in it.
Noah did many things in his life. He worked for copyright laws, wrote textbooks. Americanized the English language, and edited magazines. When Noah Webster died in 1843, he was considered an American hero.

A girl was working as a nurse in a private hospital. One day, a patient with serious disease was brought to the hospital, but had to be transferred (转移) to another hospital at once for an operation (手术). However, the director of the hospital said the patient couldn’t be transferred unless he paid his bill first. The patient’s family was very poor. They had no choice but to ask if they could pay the bill after the operation because the patient was close to death. But their request was refused.
The nurse, who had just arrived to work, heard about the situation and made a decision. She took off her gold ring, took it to the cashier’s desk (收银台) and said she would use it to pay for the patient’s bill. Although the ring was the only piece of valuable gift her parents gave her, the nurse gave it away to save the patient. Thanks to her help, the patient was at once transferred to another hospital and his life was saved. Though the patient was a stranger, the nurse gave so much to him.
The nurse’s action caught the attention of the doctor on duty that day. The doctor saw everything in the hospital and he was deeply moved by the nurse. He later fell in love with the nurse and they finally got married. The patient attended their wedding (婚礼) as well and returned the ring.

Giving a speech in front of your class can be challenging. However, you can do something to make it a success.
First of all, you need to do something about your topic. For example, choose a topic about something you like, such as something that interests you or someone who is close to you. Once you’ve chosen your topic, try to find useful information about it online or from the library. As you do this, write down the information that supports your ideas in a valuable way.
Rehearsing(排练) your speech is also important. For this, you’d better write the script just like talking to your friends. Keep your script simple. Use interesting examples or stories to show your ideas. Once you finish your script, read it out loud to yourself and remember it. After that, write down 2 to 3 points that you may forget on a note card. Finally, you have to practise your speech in front of something or someone until you don’t have to look at your note card.
In the end, it’s time to give the speech. At this time, stand straight and hold your head high. This will show that you’re confident. Show your listeners that you’re excited by smiling before you begin and throughout the speech. Pause(停顿) after finishing a sentence, or after saying an important point. It will allow you time to collect your thoughts.
If you’re out of breath while speaking or if your words star running together, you’re most probably speaking too fast. If this happens, take a breath and slow down. While talking, look at your listeners, like friends. What’s more, if you don’t remember the next word or line, pause for one or two seconds to look at your note card. Before you begin speaking, take a deep breath, smile at your listeners, and then go on.

If music makes you smarter and exercise helps you to think, surely exercising to music can turn you into an intelligent person.
A team of scientists from Ohio State University did experiments on 33 volunteers who were getting better from heart disease following operation. They found that people who exercised while listening to Italian musician Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons did much better on language ability tests than without music. It is also used in medical fields for patients who have bad head hurts because of its moderate tempo(舒缓的节奏).
“Exercise seems to cause positive changes in the nervous system and these changes may improve the learning ability of people with heart disease,” said the psychologist Charles Emery, who led the study. “And listening to music is thought to enhance understanding. We just wanted to put the two results together,” he added.
The volunteers said they felt better emotionally and physically after working out with or without the music. But their improvement on the test doubled after listening to music during exercise. Scientists have proved that music can be good for health, education and well-being. It helps reduce stress and sadness, encourages relaxation or sleep, wakes up the body and improves memory and thoughts.
Scientists have been studying the results of music on understanding since the early 1950s. A study showed that students who listened to Mozart’s violin pieces and exercised went on to get higher marks in an intelligence test. With important exams drawing near, your parents will not probably allow you to listen to music. But perhaps now you have good reasons to argue with them.

This is a story from a meeting held by some people and two things in nature. We call it the Four-Sided Talk. Let's "listen to" everyone carefully and find out what they think.
An old tree: I am thousands of years old, but I have fewer and fewer friends. I’m afraid I will be cut someday. People cut down many trees to make paper and chopsticks. Soon there will be no trees to make air and to protect people from floods. Mother nature is making many disasters to teach people a lesson.
The river: What the old tree said is right. I not only make the earth more beautiful, but provide the clean water for people and animals. Now I’m sad because people put waste into me, which kills many animals and plants that drink my water. Some people drink this kind of water and get sick, too.
People: We have lived on the earth since ancient times. The earth is our home. We have done some harm to our home! From now on, we should make full use of the resources on the earth and protect the earth. Let’s try our best!
The United Nations: We know a little about the environmental problems. Hearing what all of you said, we’ve decided to protect the earth and love the earth. We’ve also made the June 5th World Environment Day.

Once there were five beggars (乞丐). One was English, one Turkish (土耳其人), one Greek (希腊人), one was an Arab (阿拉伯人) and one was Persian (波斯人). One day they met and decided to stay together, sharing what they had and helping each other in trouble times.
Soon a man passed them in the street and gave them a coin. They talked about what to do with it. At last they decided to buy something to eat.
“Let’s buy some grapes!” said the Englishman. But the Turkish wanted “uzum”, the Arab “aneb”, the Greek “stafelea”, and the Persian insisted on “angur”. They did not understand each other’s language very well. Soon they quarrelled and even fought.
While they were fighting about how to spend the money, a stranger came along. He knew all the five languages. He asked them why they were fighting. After they told him, he said, “Give me your coin. I will buy what you want.”
He was soon back with a bunch of grapes. Each beggar was happy, as each had what he had wanted. They all asked for the same thing, but the word for “grapes” is different in different languages.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中选出最佳选项。
During this age of technology, life moves fast and people only focus on what comes next, rather than living in the present. Often their daydreaming is centered on the“next”rather than the“now”.
Technology is all about what’s next—the next innovation (创新),the next platform or the next device. This is most obvious with the iPhone. The iPhone X has just released, but businessmen and customers are already thinking about the next, newest iPhone. I am already counting the days until I can upgrade my iPhone.
Throughout my adolescence (青春期), almost every single one of my peers have been too wrapped up with the next“great”thing and put too much stress on themselves while losing sense of what is going on now or what they have achieved; it drives me totally crazy. Upon entering high school, I was excited to spend the next four years with my closest friends. Sadly, once I hit my sophomore year (高二), I began to worry about getting into a good college and what I needed to do for that to happen. By concentrating on what’s next, I seem to be missing what’s great about high school.
Most students in high school look at education as a means to an end; something that will set them up for the next step. Due to this, they pay close attention to the teacher in class, not to enrich their knowledge, but to score high on the test, making them stronger candidates (候选人) for college. What is even more annoying is that universities are now forcing high school students to have a clear idea of what they want to do in life. Most colleges have specialized schools, such as business, nursing and education; in most cases, it is very difficult to switch out of or into one of the specialized schools. Therefore, high schoolers do actually have to focus on what’s next.
When I go to college, all I am thinking about is still what comes next; that is, how to land a great job out of college. Everyone around seems to be like me. Actually, I truly hope that people who are in this very similar situation can figure out a way to make the“now”as important, if not more important, than the“next”in life.
Taking all of this into consideration, the concept of what comes next is far too ingrained (根深蒂固的) into important things of life, such as technology and education. If people keep racing from one thing to the next, life will pass them by and in a hurry; no one will be able to look back on what they have experienced or achieved, because life will have become a blur (模糊).
11.The writer mentions the iPhone in Paragraph 2 to show that .
A.the newest iPhone is always the best
B.young customers like new technology
C.the iPhone X attracts the most attention
D.technology is all about what comes next
12.What can we learn from the passage
A.High schoolers are forced to have clear ideas about their future jobs.
B.Few students pay close attention to the teacher to score high on tests.
C.Thinking too much about the present gives students too much pressure.
D.Different activities make the students stronger candidates for the college.
13.The writer probably agrees that .
A.students now care too much about unimportant things in life
B.future achievements depend on your plan in your high school
C.college education usually makes a great difference to most of the people
D.people should live in the“now”rather than only look ahead to the“next”

A.Future, in Our Eyes B.Now, in a World of Next
C.Past, Now and Future D.Technology, a Key to Future

Coffee has been a part of people’s lives for thousands of years, and today it is still a favourite drink of millions of people in the world. Coffee is so popular, but do you know the story of coffee and how it was discovered
There is an old story that says coffee was discovered in Africa long, long time ago. One day, a farmer was watching his goats, and he saw them eat some small berries from a plant. After they ate the berries, the goats became very active. The man often felt tired, so he decided to try the berries too. Surprisingly, he did not feel tired any more. Coffee plants were discovered. Then coffee was taken from Africa to Arabia, and there it was first used as medicine. The Arabs kept coffee a secret for many years. Later, coffee came to Turkey, then Italy, then France. From Europe, the coffee plant was taken to America. People found that coffee plants grew well in many parts of South America, so large coffee farms were started, and many coffee plants were grown. On these farms, coffee beans were picked from the plants by hand. Then the beans were dried and prepared for market to sell.
