Doing a bit of research before you sort your trash can make all the difference. Recycling rules differ from one city to another. Here are a few ways to help you do it better.
■Don't put your recyclables in a plastic bag.
It's not that we don't have the technology to recycle plastic bags, but it is risky to recycle them because the bags are so lightweight and flexible that they end up getting caught in the recycling equipment!
Your best option is to bring your plastic bags to a drop-off recycling center where it has the right equipment to recycle them.
■You can recycle plastic caps together with bottles.
In the past, we were told to separate the cap from the bottle when recycling. Bottles are made from #1 plastic while their caps #5 plastic. They are at different melting temperatures and need to be processed separately. But now, advanced machines have made it easier to separate bottles and caps.
At present, what you need to do is leave the plastic bottle cap on the bottle and ensure the bottle is free of all liquids before throwing it into the bin.
■You can't recycle a pizza box.
Although cardboard itself is recyclable, pizza boxes are not. Why It all comes down to the oil. When you place oily cardboard into a recycling bin, you run the risk of polluting clean, recyclable things. And an entire pack of polluted recyclables can cost more.
But if only a small part of your box is oily, pull that piece off the box and throw just that piece away while the rest of the box can then be recycled.
21. Why can't we place recyclables in a plastic bag when sorting trash
A. It will cause more pollution.
B. The equipment may fail to work.
C. Plastic bags are not tough enough.
D. No technology is available to recycle plastic bags.
22. What do we have to do to deal with the bottles with caps before recycling
A. Collect them into a specific bin.
B. Put them into different machines.
C. Separate the caps from the bottles.
D. Empty the bottles and re-cap them.
23. What makes a pizza box non-recyclable
A. The oil on it. B. Lack of proper facilities.
C. Its harmful materials. D. Different melting temperatures.

Midwife Priscilla Sitienei has become something of a celebrity as the oldest primary school student in Kenya. At 98, she sits in class alongside some of the pupils she helped bring into the world.
Sitienei, who comes from the remote village of Ndalat in Nandi County, had always wanted to become a doctor. Though that opportunity never came her way, she instead used her traditionally learned skills to help mothers deliver their babies safely at home. Still, she never let go of her dream to get an education. Giving her a dose of inspiration was a move by the Kenyan government in 2003 to make primary education free. However, it wasn't until almost a decade later that she could finally enter a classroom.
Her journey on the road to self-improvement has served as an inspiration for many in Kenya, where it was common among members of the older generations to miss out on schooling to make ends meet.
David Kinyanjui, the head teacher at Leaders Vision Preparatory School, said that while it was challenging to integrate Sitienei into the class in 2011, her determination to get an education convinced the school authorities to enroll her. Sitienei, fondly known as Gogo — or grandmother in her native language — hasn't looked back.
"Gogo could only communicate in her mother tongue of Kalenjin and Kiswahili but she was willing to start learning at the lowest level so that she could learn some English. Currently at grade six, she has learned the language and even though she is not fluent in it, she can understand what the teachers are saying in class," Kinyanjui said.
Sitienei said: "I wanted to inspire children, especially girls that education is important in shaping their future and getting out of poverty. Being a grandmother, I have witnessed some of my grandchildren drop out of school due to early pregnancies or lack of interest and the best way to show them the importance of education was by going back to school myself."
24. Which of the following statements is TRUE about Sitienei
A. She is the oldest primary school student around the world.
B. She started her primary education in 2003.
C. She entered primary school due to the government’s policy.
D. She can understand and speak English freely now.
25. The underlined word “integrate” in paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to .
A. accept B. persuade C. refuse D. invite
26. Which could be a reason why Sitienei attended school
A. She could accompany her grandchildren at school.
B. She could become a doctor.
C. She could learn some English.
D. She could show the importance of education to girls.
27. What lesson can we draw from the passage
A. Better late than never.
B. Never give up your dream.
C. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
D. Constant dripping wears away a stone.

On Tuesday, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a series of new high-producing crop varieties, including herbicide-tolerant (耐除草剂的) rice that can be directly planted into the soil, cutting the huge expenses on water and farm workers.
In India, the world's biggest rice exporter, the traditional method of rice growing requires farmers to grow seeds in nurseries, and then wait for 20 to 30 days before transplanting the small plants by hand into the fields that are ankle-deep in water.
With the new seed varieties developed by the state-run Indian Agricultural Research Institute, farmers only need to water the field once to moisten (使湿润) the soil before planting the rice. Besides, the traditional method also uses a lot of water to control weeds as herbicides are costly and often do not distinguish between the rice and the unwanted weeds.
Government scientists said the new rice varieties contained a gene that would allow farmers to spray a common, inexpensive herbicide without worrying about any side effects. “Our focus is very high on new seeds that can be adapted to new conditions, especially in changing climates,” Modi said.
Water conservation is likely to be the main attraction of the new rice varieties in India, where farmers rely heavily on monsoon (季风) rains. The traditional method uses 3,000 to 5,000 liters of water to produce 1 kg rice. The new varieties could cut water use by at least 50% to 60%, farmers and government officials say. “For farmers like us, the main concern was the management of water, and the new varieties take care of that concern,” said Ravindra Kajal, who grows rice on his 9-acre farmland in the northern state of Haryana. India is also the world's biggest rice producer after China.
28. Which is the benefit of the new rice
A. It can produce herbicide.
B. It can be planted in any field.
C. It needs a lot of water to grow.
D. It can save money for the farmers.
29. Why can farmers apply a common herbicide to the new rice
A. The new rice contains herbicide itself.
B. The herbicide is suitable for all rice varieties.
C. Genes in the new rice can avoid harm from herbicide.
D. The herbicide can distinguish the rice from the weeds.
30. What plays an important role in rice-planting in India
A. Water. B. Temperature. C. Wind. D. Sunlight.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. India Launches New Herbicides.
B. India Cuts Expenses on Farming.
C. India Promotes New Rice Varieties.
D. Farmers Appeal for New Rice Varieties.

Former Irish President Mary Robinson was just making a polite conversation with an Ethiopian teenager about her wedding day. The 16 year old had already been married for a year. “She looked at me with the saddest eyes and said, ‘I had to drop out of school.’ ” Robinson said in a telephone interview. “That conveyed to me the reality.” said Robinson, the first woman to serve as Ireland’s president and former U. N. High Commissioner for Human Rights. “Her life, as far as she is concerned, had more or less ended.”
Robinson said keeping girls in school was one of the most important things policymakers could do to address the coming challenges of an ever increasing population, predicted by the United Nations to reach 7 billion soon. “European countries are concerned about aging populations, but this is much less of an issue than the huge number of people which we are going to see over the next 40 years when the population goes from 7 billion to 9 billion,” she said. “Almost all of that increase will be in poor developing countries, so that we have a very big challenge.”
Family planning experts worry in particular about the future population explosion in Sub Saharan Africa. In May, the United Nations projected the world population would reach 9.3 billion in 2050 and 10.1 billion by 2100. Much of that growth will come from Africa, where the population is growing at 2.3 percent a year---more than double Asia’s 1 percent growth rate. If that rate stays consistent, which is not certain, Africa’s population will reach 3.6 billion by 2100 from the present 1 billion.
Joel Cohen, a professor of population studies at Rockefeller University and Columbia University in New York, said universal secondary education offered a way to reduce population in high birth rate regions. In addition to providing information about birth control, a secondary education teaches women to reduce their own fertility, improve the health of their children and allows them to move from a mindset of having many children in the hope that some will survive to improve the quality of each child’s life, Cohen wrote in the journal Nature.
32. In the first paragraph, the author introduces his topic by________.
explaining the author’s opinions
B. giving an example
C. describing the poor education system
D. coming straight to the topic
33. What can we learn from the passage
A. Robinson is happy after talking to the Ethiopian girl.
B. Robinson is a successful expert in population studies.
C. Robinson encourages female education.
D. Robinson is worried about the population growth.
34. What is Joel Cohen’s view about secondary education
A. It can change people’s parenting ideas.
B. It reduces aging population.
C. It makes people pay more attention to education.
D. It provides basic knowledge of health.
35. According to the passage, the most important way to control high population growth is______.
A. let girls go away from Africa
B. keep girls in families
C. let young girls remain single
D. keep girls in school
第二节 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。(每题2.5分,共12.5分。)
A great number of people can get injured or even killed resulting from a human stampede (蜂拥).The bad thing is that a peaceful group of people can quickly turn into a crazy panicked crowd. 36 If you are in a crowd, the most important thing is to make yourself familiar with your surroundings and mentally notice the exits. No matter where you are, make sure you always know how to get out. 37 If you are in a crowd of moving people, wet or uneven ground can be slippery or dangerous, causing you to fall.
Be aware of the general atmosphere of the event, as panic situations can often be expected. When in danger, a few seconds can make all the difference. If you find yourself in the middle of a moving crowd, do not fight against the pressure, do not stand still or sit down. 38 Take advantage of any space that may open up and try to move sideways to the crowd movement where the flow is weaker. 39 It gives you movement and protects your chest.
If you fall, get up quickly. If you fall and cannot get up, keep moving by crawling in the same direction of the crowd, or if that is not possible, then cover your head with your arms and curl up (蜷缩). 40 Sometimes, finding a right posture can save your life.
A. Make yourself aware of the type of ground you are standing on.
B. Do not lie on your stomach or back, as this dangerously exposes your lungs.
C. If you are stepped on, you should shout for help.
D. Instead, move in the same direction of the crowd.
E. Keep your hands up by your chest, like a boxer.
F. Stretch your arms to the full length so that you can make more space to move in the crowd.
G. What's worse is that the stampede can be caused while there seems no actual danger.
