Let's try doing the following experiment.
What to Do:
Use string to hang a paper clip or other small object at about chest(胸部) level.
Pick up a stick, such as a broom handle. Take three or four steps away from the paper clip.
Now close one eye and walk toward the paper clip. Try to touch it with the tip of the stick. If you miss, try again, still keeping one eye closed. Now try it with both eyes open and see if it's easier to do.
How it works:
In the experiment, you have to judge how far away the paper clip is. Your brain has several ways of doing this.
One simple way depends on how much your eye has to focus(聚焦) itself. Using only one eye, most people will find it difficult to touch the paper clip on the first try,but the brain still gets some information about distance—though not much.
Your brain can judge distance much better when you look at something with both eyes. In fact, your brain has more than one way to use both eyes in judging distance. For example,to see anything clearly, you have to make both of your eyes point at the object. When you look at a nearby object, your eyes turn inward. You can feel this happening if you look at the tip of your finger and move your finger toward your nose.
Your brain gets information from the eyes about how much they are pointing toward each other. Using that information, the brain can tell how far away any object is,whether it is a basketball or a paper clip.
34. The passage is mainly about that with eyes our brain can judge .
A. how big an object is B. how high an object is
C. how far away an object is D. how much information an object is
35. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Our brain judges distance in one way when we use both eyes.
B. Our brain cannot judge the distance of a small object but a big one.
C. How much our eyes focus helps our brain judge the size of an object.
D. How much our eyes focus helps our brain judge the distance of an object.
36. From the experiment we can infer(推断) _________.
A. with one eye we can see an object as clearly as we use two eyes
B. our eyes turn towards the inside when we look at an object very near
C. within 3 or 4 steps, the nearer an object is,the more clearly we can see it
D. our brain can hardly get any information about distance when we use one eye

Now many young people are traveling around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.
Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life. “It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone.” Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents.
In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen. It is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.
Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year. He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He said he wished he had traveled alone earlier. “The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person,” said the 30-year-old.
Richardson describes traveling alone like “a shot in the arm”, which “makes you a more confident person that was ready to deal with anything”. He said: “The feeling of having conquered something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when I’m dealing with a difficult task. I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”
The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said: “Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.”
37.Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with
A. Traveling alone is a necessary experience for everyone.
B. It is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries.
C. It is comfortable to travel around without a friend.
D. Traveling abroad helps people to find new things.
38.Traveling alone is challenging because .
A. you have to make things on your own
B. it will finally build your character
C. you depend on yourself whatever happens
D. it is hard for you to prove yourself to others
39.What can we infer about Chris Richardson
A. He started traveling at an early age. B. He was once shot in the arm.
C. He used to work as a salesman D. His website inspires others a lot.

“Hey, Jenna, do you think we’ll still be friends when we’re eighty-two ” I asked my friend. It was clear that she was wondering where I had come up with such a question. Losing Jenna would be like losing a very close sister. We killed time together. We gave each other advice.
“Of course, we’ll still be friends when we’re eighty-two.” Jenna announced loudly.
The next year, in the fourth grade, we met Jamie. The three of us soon became close friends. We played together almost every day. I thought even time couldn’t pull us apart, but I was sadly wrong.
The three of us started fighting a lot. Before Christmas, we had a really big fight, and Jamie and Jenna were against me, both saying I was bossy . I felt helpless and lonely. I thought Christmas would be very terrible!
I was surprised when Jenna came to my house and gave me a fantastic Christmas card she had made for me. I was so sure that she was still disappointed with me.
“Wow,” I said, breaking the silence as we stood on either side of my front door. “Thanks.”
“Okay…well…I have to go,” she said softly.
“Okay. See you later then…” and I closed the door.
“Who was that at the door ” my mum asked.
The card started off with “Merry Christmas”, but then it said, “I am so glad we’re friends. I am sorry about what I said when we were fighting. A fight won’t stop us from being friends. Besides, we said we were going to be friends even when we’re eight-two.”
I stopped reading and started laughing. I couldn’t believe I had forgotten what she said that day in her back yard. I couldn’t believe I had been so selfish in trying to get even and making my friends feel sorry for me that I had forgotten about real friendship.

七、任务型阅读(本大题共5空,每空1分,共5分)
We all dream about things that we would like to do and things we hope to achieve in the future. But are everybody’s dreams the same Here are some of the findings of a survey about hopes and dreams, in which thousands of students across China took part.
What are the hopes of teenagers We received several different answers to the question: what would you like to do after you finish your education It seems some students would like to start work as soon as they can, so that they can help offer their parents better lives. Other students hope to go on studying after they finish school and to go to university. Although money is important, many teenagers want to do jobs they like. According to the survey, the most popular choice of job is computer programming.
What are the dreams of teenagers Teenagers have all kinds of dreams. Some are more realistic (现实的) than others. For example, many students would like to be volunteers if Beijing could hold the World Cup, maybe working as translators or tour guides. And many students dream of having a trip to every corner of the world one day.
According to the survey, less realistic dreams are also common, but many students reported that they were willing to work hard to achieve their dreams. Quite a few dreamed of becoming famous, perhaps famous sports people or singers. Some students would like to go on exciting trips. One student would love to sail across the Pacific Ocean. And then there are dreams that there are no possibility for students to achieve. Three students would like to be able to fly.
It is clear from the survey that teenagers have similar hopes. It seems that most students hope to have a good education and find a good job. On the other hand, students dream of very different things: good things, and even crazy things. It is very important to dream, so hold on your dreams, one day they may just be realized.
A survey about some Chinese students’ hopes and dreams
