As the taxi leaves, my father stands at the living room window looking out, watching me move off into the darkness, at 4:30 a. m. His grey hair is untidy from sleeping.
Moments ago, he got up to carry my bag for me and went into the cold open air.
He thanked me for a daughter’s cooking and for having traveled so far to spend the holiday with him. I told him that I worried about he would feel lonely again in the empty house.
“I have my plans,” he said, in the moments before I walked out the door.
When I arrived 10 days ago, I felt it was quiet and lifeless in the house. Then my brothers and I came and filled the rooms. But, now, they’re gone, I am the last to leave.
As the taxi began to move, I watched the lights go off, but my father didn’t leave. Even though he couldn’t see me in the dark, he stood by the window watching, beside the tree. It was a fresh tree. He buys one every year for the new year.
The life is hard for my father: my mother died years ago, and now his children are far from home, our selfish choices taking us from one end of the country to the other, the life of the tree, cut for Christmas, is short; my father’s is long and strong. But both of them are tall and straight.

In so many ways, cyberspace (网络空间) reflects (反映) the real world. People ask for information, play games, and share hobby tips. Others buy and sell products. Still others look for friendship, or even love.
Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited (限制) to words on a computer screen. Age, identity (身份) and appearance (外表) mean very little in cyberspace. However, a person’s thoughts are what really matter. So even the shyest person can become a chat-room star.
Usually, this “faceless” communication doesn’t create problems. Identity doesn’t really matter when you’re in a chat room discussing your ideas or hobbies. In fact, this stress (压力) on the ideas makes the Internet a great place for exciting conversations. Where else can so many people come together to chat
But some Internet users want more than just someone to chat with. They’re looking for serious relationships. Is cyberspace a good place to find true friends That answer depends on whom you ask. Some of these relationships actually succeed. Others fail.
Supporters say that the Internet allows people to get to know each other intellectually (智力地) first. Personal appearance doesn’t get in the way. But others think that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace. Why Because the Internet gives users a lot of control over how others think of them. Internet users can carefully change their words to fit whatever image (形象) they want to give. In a sense, they’re not really themselves.
All of this may be fine if the relationship stays in cyberspace. But not knowing a person is a big problem in a relationship. With so many unknowns, it’s easy to let people’s imagination “fill in the blanks (空白).” This unavoidably (不可避免地) leads to disappointment (失望) when people meet in person. How someone imagines an online friend is often quite different than the real person.
So, before looking for friends in cyberspace, remember the advice of Clifford Stoll: “Life in the real world is far richer than anything you’ll find on a computer screen.”
26.Even the shyest person can become a chat-room star because what’s really important is a person’s ________.
A.age B.identity C.appearance D.thoughts
27.What do we know about the passage
A.It is possible that people can’t find true friends online.
B.Appearance is important for relationship online.
C.A shy person will surely become talkative online.
D.People are encouraged to create images in cyberspace.
28.What does Paragraph 5 mainly tell us
A.The face is the reflection of heart. B.Don’t judge (评价) a book by its cover.
C.Things are not always what they seem. D.Inner (内部的) beauty is more important than appearance.
29.What does “this” in Paragraph 6 refer to
A.People’s imagination. B.A relationship. C.The online friend. D.The real friend.
30.What is the author’s attitude (态度) to looking for true friends in cyberspace
A.Positive (积极的). B.Negative (消极的). C.Interested. D.We don’t know.
根据“However, a person’s thoughts are what really matter. So even the shyest person can become a chat-room star.”
根据“Unlike the real world, however, your knowledge about a person is limited (限制) to words on a computer screen. Age, identity (身份) and appearance (外表) mean very little in cyberspace”;“Internet users can carefully change their words to fit whatever image (形象) they want to give. In a sense, they’re not really themselves.”以及“ How someone imagines an online friend is often quite different than the real person.” 故选A。
根据“But others think that no one can truly know another person in cyberspace. ...Internet users can carefully change their words to fit whatever image (形象) they want to give. In a sense, they’re not really themselves.”
根据“But not knowing a person is a big problem in a relationship. With so many unknowns, it’s easy to let people’s imagination “fill in the blanks.”可知不了解一个人在一段关系中是一个大问题。有这么多的未知,很容易让人们的想象“填补空白”,这不可避免地导致人们见面时失望。所以此处的“this”指的是“一个人的想象力”,故选A。
30 观点态度题。根据So, before looking for friends in cyberspace, remember the advice of Clifford Stoll: “Life in the real world is far richer than anything you’ll find on a computer screen.”

Jessica and Joyce were best friends in junior Grade Three. They did almost everything together. Then one day, after a misunderstanding (误解), Joyce stopped talking to Jessica. For more than three months, Joyce refused to talk to Jessica or answer her notes. “During that time, I found out what an important friend she was,” Jessica says, “I couldn’t even give all my attention to my study, I just thought about how to heal (修复) our friendship.”
The next term, Jessica tried again. This time, Joyce was also happy to work it out. It took some time and hard work, but the friendship was healed.
Most of us have suffered the pain of broken friendships. But the good news is that most friendships can be healed.
Oxford professor Michael Argyle recently finished a 15-year study that found out what makes people happy. What did he find The key to happiness is having one close relationship and a network of friends. Other studies show that our social connections make us healthier. Keeping a healthy friendship is worth the hard work!
If there’s a broken friendship you’d like to heal, try the following advice:
> Try to see things from your friend’s point of view.
>Talk about the problems openly but kindly.
At first, Jessica didn’t understand why Joyce stopped talking to her. Then Joyce finally explained that Jessica’s trick made her upset. “I finally found out she was angry because I made fun of her in front of the boys in our class.” Jessica explained. Jessica meant nothing by her trick and thought it shouldn’t make Joyce upset. But when she realized that it was embarrassing (令人难堪的) to Joyce, she stopped.
Then their friendship could heal.

It’s not strange for friendships to change. Problems come when one friend tries to keep on while the other friend lets go. If your friend isn’t ready to work things out, accept it and move on.
