UNIT 5 Look into Science
Lesson 25: Let’s Do an Experiment!
首先,通过跟唱歌曲What Is Science 导入新课。接着,利用图片,通过讨论图片来学习本课节的词汇,并跟读练习。然后,通过听录音回答问题进入本课对话的学习;通过速读回答问题、细读回答问题、阅读找短语并翻译、读后表述如何做实验等一系列活动学习本课内容。最后,处理剩余的练习题,并利用Let’s Do It! No.3要求学生再次做实验,并写出实验过程和经过,提升学生的写作能力。本课节先通过词汇的教学为后面的学习扫清障碍,再由浅及深地展开对话的学习。最后,通过提建议来提升学生综合语言运用能力。
教学目标
通过本课节的教学,学生达成以下目标:
1. 知识目标
掌握单词:correct, method, force
接触单词:experiment, jar, upside, pour, scientific, raincoat, pressure, conclude
短语:turn...upside down, pour out, scientific method, take...off
2. 能力目标
(1)掌握本课所学的单词和英语表达;
(2)能用英语描述实验的过程。

教学过程
Step 1 Warming up
Sing a song.
Ask: Do you like science (Yes./No.) What is science?Now, let’s sing a song What Is Science along with the music.

Step 2 Presentation
1. Teach the new words experiment, correct, conclude and expressions scientific method with the pictures by talking about them.
Teacher says: Look! What’s the man doing (He is doing an experiment.) By doing the experiment, we can test if the things are correct or wrong. So it is the scientific method. And with the scientific method, we can conclude the right result.
2. Teach the new words jar, pour and expressions turn... upside down, pour out with the pictures by talking about them.
Teacher asks: Look! What’s this It’s a jar. And it’s right side up. There’s some water in it. Now, let’s turn it upside down. The water pours out.
Right side up正面朝上 turn... upside down把……翻转;倒过来
3. Teach the new words raincoat with the picture and another
two new words force, pressure.

4. Get the class to read the new words following the recording, and read the expressions alone.Then remember them.

Step 3 Listening and answering
Get the class to listen to the dialogue and answer the question.
What are Danny, Jenny and Brian doing in the lab
Answer: They’re doing an experiment.
Step 4 Reading
1. Fast-reading
Get the class to read the passage fast and answer the questions.
(1) What’s Danny’s theory
(2) What’s Jenny’s theory
Answers:
(1) Danny thinks the water will pour out, the floor will get wet.
(2)Jenny thinks the water will stay in the jar, the cardboard will hold the water.
2. Careful-reading
Get the class to read the lesson and answer the questions. (Let’s Do It! No. 1)
(1) Where does Danny think they should do the experiment
(2) What keeps the water in the jar
(3) Is Jenny sure of her theory How do you know
(4) Why does Danny put on his raincoat
(5) What does Danny conclude
Answers:
(1) He thinks that they should do the experiment outside.
(2) The force of the air. /The air pressure.
(3) Yes, she is. She is so sure of her theory that Brian can do the experiment over Danny’s head and he won’t get wet.
(4) Because he thinks he will get wet.
(5) Air is stronger than he thought.
3. Get the class to read the dialogue and find the following expressions. Then translate them into Chinese.

Step 5 Reading and saying
Get the class to read the dialogue and say out how to do the experiment according to the pictures.
Step 6 Exercises
1. Read the experiment. Put the sentences in the correct order. (Let’s Do It! No. 2)
□Put a piece of cardboard over the jar.
□The jar of water is upside down, but the water stays in the jar. This is because air pressure pushes the cardboard onto the jar.
□Fill the glass jar with water.
□Turn the glass jar over quickly. Hold your hand on the cardboard for a few seconds.
□Remove your hand from underneath the jar. What happens
□There is more air outside the jar than inside, so there is more air pressure outside than inside.
