Lesson 26: Keep the Candle Burning
首先,让学生口头描述上节课所学实验的过程,并由此导入新课。接着,通过讨论本节课所学实验需要的物品教学生词,并跟读,自读短语来巩固新学词汇。然后,把课文分成三部分,通过听、读后回答问题分别学习三部分内容;紧接着通读全文完成Let’s Do It! No.1的练习,通过读后找短语并翻译巩固所学词汇;并让学生根据图示复述课文。最后,处理剩余的练习及Project。整个教学,重在读后复述实验过程,培养学生的综合语言运用能力。
教学目标
通过本课节的教学,学生达成以下目标:

掌握单词:match
接触单词:holder, shallow, lighter, examine, oxygen

(1)掌握本课所学的单词和英语表达;

Step 1 Revision
Get the class to describe the experiment in Lesson 25 according to the pictures.
Step 2 Presentation
1. Show the class some pictures, and teach the new words holder, shallow, lighter, match by talking about the objects used in the experiment.
(1)Teacher says: Do you like doing science experiment Why or why not Today, we’ll do another science experiment. What do we need Look!This is a candle. And what’s this It’s a candle holder. And we need a big glass jar.

(2) Teacher says: Look at the dish. Is it deep No. It’s shallow. We also need some water.

Part 1
Get the class to listen and answer the question.

Part 2
1. Get the class to listen and put the sentence in the right order.
□Light the candle.
□Examine the water in the jar. What can you see
□Carefully put the jar over the candle until the top of the jar rests on the dish .
□Put the candle in the candle holder.
□Fill the dish half full with water.
□Let the candle burn for two or three minutes.
□Put the candle holder on the dish.

2. Get the class to read and answer the questions.

Part 3
1. Get the class to listen and answer the question.
What is happening
Answer: The water inside the jar rises.
2. Get the class to read and answer the questions.
(1) Why does the water rise
(2) How far does the water rise
Answers: (1) When the candle stops burning, it has used up all the oxygen in the air. So the air pressure outside the jar is stronger than that in the jar, and the force of the air outside makes the water inside rise.
(2) One fifth of the jar.
Step 4 Reading and filling
Get the class to read the lesson and fill in the blanks. (Let’s Do It! No.1)
Let’s do the experiment together! Put the candle in the candle holder. Put the
candle holder on the dish. Fill the dish half full with water. Light the candle with a __________ or a lighter. What can you see The candle is burning. __________ the candle burn for two or three minutes. Then carefully put the jar over it until the top of the jar rests on the dish. As the candle burns, it ________ the oxygen in the jar. When the candle stops_________, it has used up all the oxygen in the jar.
