Post-Listening---Discussion
Sample Dialogue 2
Bob: To me, Bill Gates is a great man.
Greta: Why do you think that
Bob: Well, I guess, because he’s one of the world’s most successful businessmen. You see, almost everyone uses his products on their computers.
Greta: Let me think about that for a moment. I guess that’s true, but I don’t think that makes him great. When Gates started out, there were many other computer systems that were just as good or better than Windows. He didn’t invent something completely new. He was just lucky.
Bob: Well, er, maybe luck had something to do with it, but great people make their own luck because they’re clever and work hard.
Greta: I don’t really think that’s true. A lot of clever people work hard and never have good luck.
Bob: Then who do you think is great
Greta: Thomas Edison, because he had so many inventions that helped mankind. The light bulb, the record player, films... The world we live in now is a world that Edison made for us. Without his original ideas, we would not have much of the modern technology we have today.
Bob: I’m not sure that his ideas were really that original. For example, Edison didn’t really invent the light bulb. Rather, he invented the first successful light bulb. The idea for the light bulb had been around for a long time, but because Edison worked harder and was cleverer than everyone else, he was able to succeed where many people had failed.
Greta: Hang on a second. I believe that Edison’s inventions have helped far more people than Bill Gates’s.
Bob: I simply disagree.
Jill: You know, I think that I have to disagree with both of you. The greatest person I know of is John Watson.
Bob: Really Who’s he I’ve never heard of him.
Jill: How shall I put this He’s just a regular guy. One night he was taking his dog for a walk when he saw a house on fire. A woman was standing outside the house screaming because her two kids were trapped inside and were going to burn to death. John didn’t even think twice but just ran into the burning house to look for them. He found both kids upstairs in their bedroom, hiding in a closet. He took them one by one, and dropped them out of the window to safety. But the fire became too strong, so he wasn’t able to make it out himself.
Greta: Wow! He gave up his own life to save others. What a brave man!Well, I guess you don't have to be famous to be great.
Bob: I guess not.
3. Use your discussion to draw conclusion about the meaning of greatness. The following expressions may help you. Then report back to the class.

makes great contributions to society
Good morning, everyone! I want to introduce a great man to you. The greatest person I know of is Dr. Zhong Nanshan, who sucessfully dealt with the SARS outbreaks in China in 2003. Now it's he who prevented the COVID-19 from quick spread all over the country once again. To me, greatness means sacrifice and devotion. Dr Zhong Nanshan risks himself in entering the isolated area to cure the patients, summarizing the infected but recovered cases and sharing his successful experience with other doctors at home and abroad. These days, he still works tirelessly to improve the health of our Chinese People and he always takes responsibility of helping others. Dr. Zhong Nanshan serves as a good role model and makes great contributions to society. That's all. Thank you!

A Sample
Hello, everyone. I’d like to talk to you about my hero, Yuang Longping.
Yuan Longping is a great scientist who is devoted to agriculture. Born in Beijing in 1930, Yuan graduated from Southwest Agricul-
tural College. After graduation, finding ways to grow more rice has been his life goal. Thanks to his research on hybrid rice, we have more ways to increase the rice output and rid ourselves of hunger, for which he is honoured as the “father of hybrid rice”.
Yuan Longping lives a simple life and he cares little about money or being famous. As for hobbies, he enjoys listening to music as well as swimming.
Yuan Longping has made great contributions not only to China, but also to the whole world. Therefore, in my eyes, he is more than a scientist; he is a pioneer for all people.
Thank you!
