The number of candles is the person’s age.

the number of 表示……的数量，跟复数名词连用做主语时，中心词是number，谓语动词要用单数。
a number of 和 the number of 的区别
1.a number of 表示一些，修饰可数名词，用法和some, many, lots of, a lot of 一样。注意：其修饰的可数名词要用复数形式，be动词也要用复数。其形式可以变成 a small/large/great number of。
2.the number of...表示……的数量，修饰名词时，be动词要用单数。
