As the saying goes,“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” This is never truer for you than when you are trying to master English.Lai Shixiong,a respected English master from Taiwan, has a story to share.
Like many non-native speakers,Lai failed when he first started learning English. When he was in high school,he once
got an unbelievably low mark of 7 out of 100 on an English test.He almost gave up on English, but then he entered a military school (军校),where he met a classmate who was good at English.
Amazed by his classmate’s American accent,Lai decided to start learning English from the beginning. As he put it, “I saw myself as a baby who had just started to learn a language.” To
correct his pronunciation,Lai practiced phonetic symbols (音标) hundreds of times every day using records.
When he was able to pronounce words,Lai said he began to practice dialogs. Not being able to find someone to practice with,Lai created a learning atmosphere (氛围) on his own. “I just talked to myself as if I were in a dialog,” he said.
Lai also thought of ways to improve his skills. He used English to describe everything he saw.He even translated speeches when he went to class meetings at the military school. He also read and listened to English news to learn new expressions.
“There is no shortcut (捷径) to mastering a language. You have to practice,” Lai said. After all,Rome wasn’t built in a day.

When do children start to talk If you ask a group of parents when this happened, most will say “around twelve months of age”. They will probably even remember what the children said. Many parents keep a diary of their child’s “first words”.
We can never predict what a first word is going to be. Often it’s word “Mummy” or “Daddy”, but it could just easily be the
word for an animal or a favorite toy. Everything depends on what has caught the child’s attention most. But one thing is certain: after the first word, others come quickly. By 18 months, most children have learned about 50 words. By two years old, the total has risen to around 200.
At the beginning, what the children say is actually one-word sentences. One of the first features of language that a child learns well is to control the rise and fall of the voice to make the
difference between stating and questioning. In English, “Daddy” with a high rising tone means “Is that Daddy ” “Daddy” with a high falling tone means “There’s Daddy”. Of course, only very basic meanings can be communicated using tones alone. So it soon becomes necessary to learn some grammar.
In English, grammar means learning to put words in different orders. Children have to know that “Mummy push” is different
from “push Mummy”. They start practising such changes at around 18 months. By two, they have learned the basic patterns of word order, and we hear them saying such things as “man kick ball” and “where Daddy go”.
What are the parents doing all his time They’re acting as teachers and they always have an active role to play in their child’s language learning.
( )1. An English child might say “_____” first when learning to talk.
A. Mummy B.push Mummy
C. man kick ball D. where Daddy go
( )2. Most children have learned about 50 words when they are _____.
