A road is a path that links two places. The Silk Road is a path that has linked the Eastern and Western worlds for more than 2, 000 years.
But did you know: the Silk Road is not a single route (路线)! It is actually a series of trade and cultural transmission (传送)
routes that started in ancient times. It began during the Western Han Dynasty. The trade route started from the city of Xi’an in Shaanxi Province and ended in Eastern Europe, near today’s Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea (地中海). The Silk Road was about 6, 500 kilometers long.
The Silk Road got its name because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. Apart from silk, jade (玉器), ceramics (陶
器) and iron went west to Rome. From the west came glass, gems, and food like carrots and sesame (芝麻).
The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. In addition to goods, knowledge of science, arts and literature, as well as crafts (工艺) and technology, was shared across the Silk Road. In this way, languages and cultures developed and influenced each other.
Today, places along the Silk Road are known as top travel places, such as the Terracotta Army (兵马俑) in Xi’an and Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟) in Dunhuang, Gansu. US writer Margaret Lee Runbeck once wrote, “Happiness is not a station you arrive at, but a manner of traveling.” But traveling is not always happy, at least for the buddies in the movie Green Book. It is a warm and heartfelt look at a remarkable friendship, brought to the screen at a moment where its story of love, compassion (同情), and shared humanity (人性) deeply resonates (产生共鸣).
The movie was adapted (改编) from the true story of a road trip through the Southern United States in the early 1960s. In the film, the pianist Don Shirley hires (雇佣) Italian-American Tony Lip to drive him to performances, but they face problems because of Shirley’s skin color. These problems lead them to form a special friendship.
The time of the movie talking about was between late 1870s and 1960s, a very different period in the US history. Many parts of
the country had Jim Crow laws, which allowed racial segregation (种族隔离). These laws made life and travel dangerous for African-Americans. They couldn’t use certain hotels, restaurants, or even gas stations. They had to be indoors after sunset or they might go to jail (监狱). But in 1936, an African-Americans mail carrier named Victor had an idea. He made a list of friendly businesses in New York City. He published the list as a small book
with a green cover. The Green Book helped African-Americans travel more safely. Then, in 1964, Jim Crow laws went away. The book went away, too.
Today many US people still remember the time of Jim Crow. But they probably don’t know about The Green Book. It’s a forgotten part of the story. Thanks to this movie, maybe people can remember it again.
