Step1. Presentation Play a dialogue for the students to listen and check and see if they can understand it Get the students to listen and repeat with the help of the text. Say: We often link sounds together when we speak English. Can you find out the ways of linking sounds together Use some pictures to presents some phrases A picture of an apple: an apple A picture of a family of three: father and mother A picture of some dogs and a fish: Look at the picture. Do the dogs like eating fish No, of course not. So they go away. A picture of a cake: a big cake Get the students to read the phrases and help them find out the four ways of linking s sounds We usually link a consonant sound with a vowel sound When the first words ends in –r or –re and the next word begins with a vowel sounds, we join them together with a /r/ sound between them When there are two vowels sounds, we join them as if there were a /j/ or /w/ between them Listen and understand Listen and repeat Why we can’t understand Learn understand
When two consonant sounds of the two words meet, we sometimes do not need to pronounce the first consonant sound Step2. Practice Play the recording of Part A for the students to listen and repeat Get them to pay attention to the way the sounds are linked together. Do the same to Part B, C and D. Get the students to practice in pairs: read expression to each other and check the mistakes. Step3. Practice Show the students some more expressions In a minute, fall in the river, tell us a story, take care of it, wait for a student, for an hour, can’t hear it, in an office, work at it Show the students some sentences and get them to read these in the right ways of linking sounds He is an English boy.
