The old city of Pingyao is in the center of Shanxi Province, China. It has a history of more than 2,700 years. Since 1997, Pingyao City has been a world cultural heritage site (遗产地), and it is the only old city in China as in good condition as it was hundreds of years ago.
There are several gates in the city, two each in the east and west, one each in the south and north. All the gates have two doors each. This made the city get the name of “Turtle City”, with the southern gate as the head and the northern gate as the tail of the turtle, the four gates in the west and east standing for the four legs, and the four major streets, eight small streets and 72 lanes (巷) as the back of the turtle. In the past, a turtle meant long life and peace.
With Pingyao's special location —on the trade road between Beijing and Xi'an, the local people set up the nation's earliest banks. As a result, it made Pingyao become a trade center. Those banks were the first to use checks (支票) in China.
However, these years most of old yards have been turned into museums. They were homes and offices of Pingyao's old banks before. If you have paid a visit to Pingyao, you may have realized how important Pingyao was to China's financial (金融的) history.

Some of China's famous Terracotta Warriors were on show at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne in 2019. The exhibition ran from May 24th to October 13th. It showed eight life-size warriors, two life-size horses and two half-size bronze chariots replicas (青铜双轮战车复制品), each drawn by four horses. Gold, jade, and bronze artifacts (手工品) dating back thousands of years were also shown in the exhibition.

If you say the word “museum”, most people will think of a large building. It holds important things to record history. The South Street Seaport Museum has such a building, but it includes much more. The museum is a group of buildings, streets, homes, businesses and eating places.
A visit to the South Street Seaport Museum should start at the corner of South Street and Fulton Street. On this corner, you can see much of Fulton Street. If you look across South Street, you can see two huge sailing ships, the Peking and the Wavertree. A little more than a hundred years ago, thousands of huge ships carried goods around the world. Today there are only a few such ships, including the two.
Most visitors to the South Street Seaport Museum come to see the ships. The Peking is a huge sailing ship. It is one of the largest sailing ships left from a time when these were the only ships on the seas.
Next to the Peking is the Wavertree. It is almost as large as the Peking. The Wavertree was built in the British port of Southampton. Workers began rebuilding (重建) the huge ship in 1970. The work continues today. Progress is very slow because of the cost and the amount of work. For example, workers had to rebuild the tall wooden masts (桅杆) that hold the ship's sails. Each mast had to be built specially for the Wavertree.
