To welcome the arrival of World No Tobacco Day, our school held a series of activities to create a smoke-free campus last week.
First, each class designed a poster, presenting the harm of smoking, both to the smokers themselves and the people around them. Second, we held a speech contest, during which the teachers and the students introduced their understanding of the importance of giving up smoking. Third, all the teachers and students signed a letter of commitment in which they promised never to smoke in the campus again.
These activities ensured us a clean and healthy campus environment. We believe we will enjoy a healthier world with more and more people keeping away from smoking.田家炳中学教育集团2021-2022学年高一下学期期中考试

Carol: I started playing the cello (大提琴) when I was about eight or nine. It was great playing the cello because I was in youth orchestras and we went abroad to do tours. But anyway, when I got to university, I stopped playing. Well, there just wasn't time and there were so many other things to do. Luckily, I took it up after my 25th birthday and joined a band.
Daniel: When I was little, I thought I'd end up learning the guitar like my father, but then I decided that I wanted to have my own instrument (乐器), so I chose the trumpet (小号). I'm in the school jazz band and I'd like to be a musician when I grow up, but my dad says it's difficult to make a living from music. But I don't want to be a lawyer like him. It's so boring.
Carmen: Nobody likes living near someone like me because when I practise, I make a lot of noise! But you have to keep practising, don't you Otherwise it gets more and more difficult. The trouble is, in the summer, when it's hot, I have to open the windows, so the whole street gets to hear it if I'm not careful. I love playing the drums and I play in a fantastic band.
Vince: I've played the guitar for as long as I can remember, but when I was trying to make it as a musician after school, I used to play in the Underground in London to make a bit of extra money. I was born in Venice, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, and studied designing at university here. Though I have also spent time away, I have always come back because it's my home.
In Venice, there are no roads, only canals (运河), so you have to get around on foot or by boat. I live on a canal in the Rialto area in a house that was built in 1588 for the Muti family, who were businessmen in the silk trade. In the mid-eighteenth century, it was home to the Vezzi family, who made things like plates and bowls in fine china and became rich by sending these around the world. These businessmen's houses in Venice are like palaces. Their owners had to have space to show off their goods, but the building also had to be an office, a factory, a store and a home. My house came into our family in 1919, when it was bought by my grandfather. He died before I was born but he was the director of a museum where I often do research on old documents. On some of these, I've seen notes in his handwriting, so, in a way, I met him through these documents.
Sadly, the population of Venice has dropped from 120,000 in the 1950s to about 60,000 now. This doesn't include the thousands of tourists who come to visit. I welcome the tourists but unless something is done to stop everyday shops like bakeries from disappearing, the city will die. I want people who love the city to come here to live and work and give Venice back a life that is not just about tourism.
25. What can we learn about the family who first owned the author's home
A. They were china dealers. B. They made plates and bowls.
C. They used to buy and sell silk. D. They helped to build the canals.
26. What does the author say about his grandfather
A. He met his grandfather in an unusual way.
B. His grandfather taught him how to write.
C. His grandfather turned his home into a museum.
D. He found his grandfather's handwriting hard to read.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph about Venice
A. It faces a difficult situation. B. It can't feed its population.
C. It needs more modern shops. D. It has fewer tourists than before.
C
Dear Mary,
It was so nice to read your letter the other day. I have always dreamed about having a pen friend. Hopefully, we can learn from each other and grow to be the very best of friends. It is my wish that our letters will let us get to know each other and share parts of our lives.
Your horse Shannon sounds beautiful. I am very jealous (羡慕的) that you get to live on a farm. I cannot imagine how much fun it is to ride a horse through endless fields and I would love to come and visit you one day. Your siblings (兄弟姊妹) also sound lovely. I am an only child, so I can only imagine what it is like to have older brothers and sisters.
Life in New York is so busy and it is difficult to find the time to get to know people. Even becoming close to my classmates has proved to be quite difficult over the years. However, at times it can be the most amazing city in the whole wide world. At night it is so bright and lively and the whole place is full of things to do.
I love reading too! I have never read any books by your favorite author Enid Blyton though. I will have to go to my local library and find some. I also enjoy dancing and often enter competitions. My other favorite hobby is ice skating. In winter, I skate in Central Park. In the other seasons, I go to an indoor rink (溜冰场). I am hoping to start entering ice skating competitions next year.
Anyway, I have to go now and do my homework. I really hope that I hear from you soon!

Megan

Katie Smith Milway, author of the CitizenKid series, encourages children to be better citizens (公民). Milway's most well-known book is called One Hen: How One Small Loan (贷款) Made a Big Difference. The book is inspired (赋予灵感) by the true story of Kwabena “Kojo” Darko. It tells how a poor boy, Darko, in Ghana receives a small loan and buys a hen. This results in 25 more hens. The farm is enough to support Kojo's family and provide a livelihood for others.
In a recent interview, Darko talked about how the hen changed his life. “It was amazing,” he said. “I slept with the chicken; I did everything with the chicken. It brought us money, and I was able to go to school and study.” The tiny farm finally grew into one of the largest in West Africa.
Darko went on to become chairman of Opportunity International, an organization that gives loans to people who cannot get them from a bank. “I want to give people who are poor and needy a chance just as someone did for me,” Darko said.
By writing about how small kindnesses can help families like Darko's, Milway hopes to encourage kids to deal with such problems as poverty (贫穷). “Build a little business,” she said. “Maybe it's a lemonade stand. Maybe it's bigger than that. With the money you have made, you have a choice of spending it, saving it, or giving it to help others.”
Milway likes the idea of kids volunteering (志愿工作). When she was growing up, she enjoyed taking part in church activities and her school service organizations. She said that her mother encouraged her by volunteering and helping international students. “We were always a home where they could feel welcome,” Milway said.
