In my early childhood, I was often surprised when I saw my father making a little money with difficulty. Being a child, I was unable to understand him. When I was older, my father started doing a part-time job at home. He used to bring some work back and work till late at night.
I can’t forget he played with me when I was 3. He taught me to read when I was 5. He took care of me all night when I was sick. Whenever I felt down, he would cheer me up. He also cared about my lessons and often helped me prepare for examinations. Later he provided me with the best education. Whenever I needed money for my studies, he never refused.
Two years ago, I got a job at a hospital. When I helped my first patient, I got a strong feeling of satisfaction. When I got my first salary which was about ten times more than my pocket money, I spent it all on myself.
When I returned home one morning, I heard my father talking with one neighbor. He was telling him my success in the job proudly. He also told him that I had a higher salary than him. His dream that his son would become better than himself came true.
The past 23 years flashed into my mind in a moment. I knew my father loved me very much. I could understand the meaning of my father’s aspirations(愿望). I could understand the decisions my father made in the past. The financial(财务的) difficulty he was facing was decided by his goal of making his child more successful than himself.

Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, the two sessions(两会) of 2020 were held a bit differently. Different kinds of high technology were used to make the meetings go smoothly. Let’s take a look at some of them!
A 3D AI news host, Xin Xiaowei, came to work on May 22nd, 2020. The “woman” host, the first of its kind in the world, reported on the two sessions. She can move around easily, make gestures and show expressions like nodding and blinking (眨眼). She can even change her clothes and hairstyle according to different situations.
The AI host was “cloned (克隆)” after Zhao Wanwei, a reporter who works for Xinhua. Hundreds of cameras were used to trace (追踪) her movements and expressions. On May 20th, 2020, Dr. Cai Weiping took part in a special interview with Xinhua. He and the interviewer were in two different cities. However, viewers(观众) could see them on the same screen. They talked with each other and even “shook hands”, like they were sitting face to face in the same room.
This was made possible thanks to 5G technology. 5G is used to show 3D pictures of people or things because of its high speed.
Online interviews were also used during the meetings. Reporters worked from different rooms, but they could see each other on big screens in their own rooms and communicate.

Betty and Tony moved to a house with a very big garden. They could climb up trees, grow flowers and even play badminton. They liked to watch the birds flying among the trees in the garden. They even started to put food out to attract more birds.
Everything was fine for a few days until one afternoon there was a strange bumping(碰撞) noise on a window. Betty went outside and found a small bird dead on the grass. Its neck seemed to be broken.
“It must have flown into the window,” Tony said when Betty called him to have a look. “Ah, yes. You can see the mark where it hit the window. There are a couple of tiny feathers(羽毛) stuck on the window.” “Oh, the poor thing!” Betty said.
During the next month, five more birds died in the same way. “Why would they fly to the windows ” They wondered. Finally, they knew the truth. When the birds were flying, they couldn’t see into the rooms. All they saw was the reflection(反射) of the garden. They thought that they were flying into trees because they saw trees reflected by the window. “Something has to be done to save the birds,” the parents decided.
At first, the family tried keeping curtains (窗帘) across the windows, but this made the room dark. Then they bought some strong black paper and cut out the shape of a hawk. It could scare the birds. They made six hawks—one for each window. The hawks looked pretty and did not keep out much light.
After that, there were no more dead birds. The family were much happier.

Humans and gorillas (大猩猩) shared evolution (进化) for 23 million years. Their paths(路径) separated only six million years ago. A new research on how gorillas communicate may help us better understand human communications.
Understanding how the brain works helps us see a connection between language development and non-verbal(非言语的) signs. “Gorillas have many kinds of non-verbal communication,” said psychologist (心理学家) Sebestyen Forrester from the University of Sussex. He thinks humans may have had the same communication skills.
Non-verbal communication includes the ways we move our bodies and the different expressions on our faces. A new study on gorillas showed that right-handedness may have a connection with communication. The right side of the body is controlled by the left part of the brain, which is also where language develops.
Two cameras were used to watch how one gorilla moved. It was shown that gorillas use their right hands more when they are doing actions with their heads or mouths at the same time. This may show that there is a connection between how our brains work and the reason we use one side of our body more than the other.
Sebestyen Forrester said the results could help us understand how children learn languages. For example, some children have a condition called autism in which they have a hard time communicating with other people. This same kind of study may help doctors find autism in children at an earlier age.

It is often said that dogs are “man’s best friends”. But for some children in China, this idea has taken on an even deeper meaning.
Wu Qi, a dog trainer(驯养师)in Shanghai, started the Paw for Heal(PFH)program in China about eight years ago. The program trains dogs for animal-assisted therapy(动物辅助治疗). These animals help elderly people feel calm and less stressed. They also help people with mental illness(精神疾病).
In Shanghai, the dogs have been trained to help kids with autism. Autistic children are easily confused(困惑的)or scared by their environments. But when the PFH dogs are around, they feel much more calm.
Pet owners can train their pets to become therapy dogs through PFH. Although this training is difficult(only 20 percent of dogs end up passing the program), it also helps a lot of people.
“She(my dog)makes me happy every day, and I think she can bring happiness to other people in need as well,” a pet owner Wang Rui said in a report by Sixth Tone.
Animal-assisted therapy is new to China. But Wu has high hopes for the future, as he is now working together with a Scottish(苏格兰的)university to improve his program.

In Singapore in 2019, the company Volocopter demonstrated (演示) a flying taxi.A pilot flew the test model. But in the near future, these helicopter-like vehicles will be able to fly by themselves while carrying two or more passengers and their things.
If some people traveled in flying taxis, there would be fewer cars on the roads, thus reducing traffic congestion there. In the 3D space of the air, vehicles can move around each other without bridges or tunnels (隧道) or extra lanes. The taxis could also take off and land on rooftops, freeing up parking lot spaces on the ground. What’s more, flying is fun. Wouldn’t it be cool to move rapidly through the sky every day on your way to work or school
However, there are quite a few good reasons why we don’t have flying cars yet. The famous inventor Elon Musk who runs the rocket company Space X and electric car company Tesla Motors said, “If the sky was full of cars flying all over the place, it would affect how things look. It would be noisier and there would be a greater probability of something falling on your head.” And aircraft crashes would be more serious than car crashes.
Elon Musk thinks building lots of tunnels underground is a safer way for future transportation. He even has a company working on this idea, the Boring Company. (The name is a play on words. “Boring” means “drilling a hole” and “uninteresting”.) What do you think Is flying cars or taxis a good idea Or should we find other ways to solve the world’s transportation problems

Qomolangma is the world’s highest mountain. You may have learned that its height is 8,848?86 meters. But different researchers have given different results. In addition, the height of the mountain can change over time.
That’s why a 30-member Chinese survey team set out to reach the peak (顶峰) of Qomolangma to re-measure its height on May 6th. They are equipped with the latest technology, including a global navigation satellite system receiver and a radar (雷达).
It is not an easy task. The average air temperature on the mountain is -29℃—four degrees lower than in Antarctica (南极洲). And powerful winds blow all the time. In such bad conditions, surveying drones (无人机) cannot work at the peak of the mountain. That’s why it’s still necessary to send human experts to the peak to get believable results.
But does a difference of a few meters really matter when it comes to a high mountain
In fact, measuring the height of Qomolangma is about more than just getting one exact number. Mount Qomolangma is at the point where the Eurasian Plate meets the Indian Plate. It formed 38 million years ago as the two plates hit each other. Changes in the peak’s height can show whether the two plates are heading toward or away from each other. This can help us understand the movement of the earth’s crust (地壳).
The survey team will also get first-hand information about environmental conditions at the top of the mountain. This will help us understand how climate change has affected the Tibet-Qinghai Plateau (高原).
( )1.We can know that ______ in the first paragraph.
A.the height of Qomolangma increases every year

A.the average air temperature on it is lower than that in Antarctica
B.powerful winds blow all the time in Antarctica
C.there’s no difference measuring the height by the experts or not
D.few people can stand the conditions on the mountain
A
( )3.Human experts try to get to the top of the mountain in order to ______.
A.explore the bad conditions
B.fix the receiver and the radar correctly
C.make sure the drones work in control
D.get believable information

Things like art, gaming, the Internet, and space travel are only made possible by the amazing intelligence (智能) of humans.
However, some believe that we can create machines that can think and feel just as we do. Those machines belong to part of artificial(人工的)intelligence, or AI.
AI is around us every day. From Huawei’s voice assistant(助手) Xiaoyi to the face recognition(识别) system, AI is very much a part of our lives.
But why do we put so much effort into creating machines that can think the way we do For one thing, AI can make our lives much easier. Imagine being able to be in a car, tell it where you want to go, and sit back comfortably as the AI-guided self-driving car takes you there. We’re already getting there.
Changsha was the first city in China to roll out self-driving taxis in April, 2020. Now, hundreds of robot taxis are running on streets and roads in Changsha.
However, there are risks. What if we produced an artificially intelligent machine that was smarter than us How would it behave toward us These are the kinds of difficult questions that AI researchers ask themselves all the time.
Though there are risks, it is already clear that AI is here to stay. Only time will tell if it will lead us into a new age of prosperity (繁荣), or be our end.

Few students like it, but homework is an important part of secondary school life in the UK. The UK has these government guidelines (指导方针) for homework: Grades 7 and 8 (aged 11 to 13): 45 to 90 minutes every day; Grade 9 (aged 14 to 15): 1 to 2 hours a day.
Today, many homework tasks are done on a computer, such as preparing reports, searching for information or doing online tasks. So schools are usually open before and after normal hours. In this way, students without computers or the Internet at home can use the schools’ facilities (设施).
Sometimes students are given “extended learning tasks”. This means they need to do more research when working on a history or an art project. But no matter how big the task is, teachers will always give feedback (反馈) to help students find the areas where they can improve.
Some schools send students home with a homework diary. They encourage parents to check their children’s progress. Other schools have websites that parents can use to track (追踪) their children’s performance every day.
Sadly, not every parent takes that much interest. In a survey of 1, 000 students aged 11 to 18, over one in ten said that they did not have space at home to do homework. Almost 15 percent said that their family did not support them enough.
