三、阅读理解(B篇)
Ever since it was first discovered in 40,000 BC, gold has fascinated mankind. For thousands of years, we have linked it with wealth and power. But what else can we learn about this popular metal
For one thing, we can’t make gold ourselves by mixing different elements, such as lead (铅). It comes from outer space.
Studies have shown that when neutron stars (中子星) crash into each other, they start a fusion reaction (熔合反应) that creates gold. It didn’t just appear on Earth one day—stars spread it all over the universe.
Chiaki Kobayashi, a scientist from the UK, has found that neutron stars can’t be responsible for the entire amount of gold we have on Earth. Kobayashi thinks there is another mysterious source of gold somewhere in the universe.
No matter how we got it, it is useful. Gold can be drawn into a very thin wire (线) that still conducts (传导) electricity, making it useful for making electronics. Since it’s not dangerous to eat in small amounts, gold flakes can be used to decorate food. And there are few pieces of jewelry (珠宝) that are as classic as a simple gold necklace.
