四、阅读理解(B篇)
The words “protect animals” appear everywhere in books and on screens because some animals are in danger of dying out.But sometimes the reality can be a little different from what people read or watch.
About 300 black bears were killed in Florida, the US, in October, 2015. lt's been the first bear hunt since 1994.
Animal protection groups protested(抗议) this decision. But local officials explained that the black bear population had grown to 3,500 and become a menace to local people. In the past two years, bears have hurt at least four people in Florida.
This brings an old question back into the spotlight—which is more important, protecting animals or protecting people's interests
This question is asked in other countries, too. In Switzerland, a wolf was sentenced to death by the Swiss government months ago. This is because the wolf killed 38
sheep and local people lost a lot of money.Days ago in China, three old men were arrested for killing a serow(鬣羚), a protected species. But they insisted they didn't know about this and killed the animal because it ruined their crops.
However, these stories don't always mean that animal protection stops due to human interests, especially involving economic development. A man named Zhou Weisen set up a wild animal base in Guilin, Guangxi. He saved over 170 tigers and 300 bears. And his base also offered jobs to local people.
( )21. About _______ black bears were killed in Florida in October, 2015.
A. 38 B. 170
C. 300 D. 3,500
C
( )22. In October, 2015, Florida held its first bear hunt after about _______.
A. five years B. ten years
C. fourteen years D. twenty-one years
D
( )23. The underlined word “menace” means _______.
A. danger B. chance C. culture D. protection
( )24. Three old men in China were arrested for killing a _______.
A. black bear B. wolf C. serow D. tiger
C
A
( )25. What did Zhou Weisen NOT do
A. Set up a wild animal base in Guilin.
B. Save more than 170 tigers and 300 bears.
C. Offer jobs to local people.
D. Protest the hunt for black bears.

Human beings continue to develop. And at the same time, they hurt a lot of animals. Animals' homes are becoming fewer and fewer day by day. And some animals even die out.
In the death of animals, thylacines (袋狼) were the worst. A long time ago, they lived in the wild, and they were very happy and free. Since the arrival of human beings, their life changed a lot. As a large number of humans made the wild land become their own farms, thylacines didn't have enough food to eat. So they started to steal (偷) the humans' animals to eat. Farmers hated thylacines very much and then they killed a lot of them. When people realized the disappearance (消失) of the thylacine, they began to protect the last thylacines in the zoo.
Of course, not all animals die out because of humans' killings. Some animals can't adapt to the changes of the environment. And the war among different living things is another reason. Nowadays, in order to make money, a lot of people sell animals' fur in the shopping center. And their meat is sold to many restaurants in the world. Hunters have the responsibility, and so do the buyers. If no buyers need the fur and the meat, hunters will not take the risk. Animals are our friends, so we should remember that to protect animals is to protect ourselves!
