I had to go to the airport at 9:00 am to pick up Uncle Jim and take him to my father’s house. However, I was late because I hung out with my friends. Later on that day, around 11:00 am, I remembered my uncle and went to the airport to meet him, but I was too late. He had left the airport and taken a taxi to my father’s house. I got to my father’s house at 2:00 pm that day. ② Looking at my father’s face, I felt ashamed (羞愧的) at that moment. My father asked me to sit next to him and he handed me this watch as a gift. Then he said, “Bob, did you have fun with your friends today?” “Yes, Father, and I’m sorry about not picking up Uncle Jim,” I replied. He then said, “What you did was not very nice and you should be sorry for your actions. I think you should learn something from it, and this watch will be a reminder for you in your future life.” ③ The watch is very important to me, not because of its price, but because of the lesson that I learned from it. In the past twenty years, riding bicycles has become more and more popular among people of all ages. (3) Bicycles have long played an important part in the lives of American young people. But today an even greater number of adults cycle along roadsides and bicycle paths. These new riders are often trying to become fit or lose weight. They have found that bicycling is a pleasant way to stay healthy.
This is certainly good for health. But it has also brought some problems. With all these added people on the road, bicycle safety has become a matter of real importance.
Bicycle safety is mostly a matter of common sense. People should ride only on bicycle paths where they will not be badly hurt. There are also a number of rules that riders should follow, especially when riding on streets or highways. Bicyclists should never ride against the traffic, nor should they carry other people on their bicycles. They are also supposed to ride in single line on busy streets and to "walk bicycles across the busy intersections (交叉路口) . (4)By following these rules, bicycle riders will not only stay healthy but also be safe.
In one recent year, the National Safety Council reported that 34 thousand bicycle riders were hurt in highway accidents. In that same year, another six hundred riders were killed. Since the introduction of crash helmets (头盔) in 1980, the number of injuries (伤者) and deaths from bicycling accidents had gone down. Today, more and more riders realize the dangers of bicycling. 根据短文内容回答下列问题
Nowadays people are making themselves beautiful in Korean ways.
“Thank goodness you have double eyelids (双眼皮). Your parents will save a lot of money,” said a family friend when I was five years old. Double eyelids, which almost all the white people have, are rare among Northeast Asians. Only 25% of South Koreans are born with double eyelids.
I never quite understood how having double eyelids saved my parents money until that summer when I came back to Seoul. Everywhere I noticed cosmetic surgery clinics (整形诊所) and advertisements with South Korean women --- tall, thin, with milky skin, long legs, nice big eyes and perfect noses. I found that South Korean beauty meant looking as “white” as possible.
Cosmetic surgery has a kind of magical attraction to women --- the promise of beauty. Women are often sure that suffering and sacrificing (牺牲) is necessary and worthy in order to be beautiful. This suffering is not for nothing. It is believed that beauty leads to attracting a better-looking partner, which then leads to a better-looking child and a better life.
Appearance is starting to play a bigger role in work places. For example, my 29-year-old brother, who is slim and very tall, gets more job chances than his best friend, who is shorter and heavier, though both of them came from the same college, had the same good marks in their studies. In fact, many South Koreans believe that physical beauty equals happiness.

Trees are one of the oldest “citizens(公民)” of our Earth. They keep our air clean, reduce (减少)noise pollution, improve water quality (质量) and provide food and building materials.
Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. At 1 to 3 years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves. For example, many trees grow thorns (刺) to warn animals not to go near. Most young trees have large, deep green leaves so that they can catch enough sunlight and change it into their food and energy.
当小树成长到四年的时候,它们成长加速并且进一步强壮,以足以面对未来生命中的挑战。At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit.
It is not until the tree is 20 to 25 years old that it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. Not only does the adult tree give us shade, oxygen (氧气) and natural beauty; it is also a great place for a tree house, or a place for us to nap, read a book, listen to music or sip (小口喝) tea. If we give the adult tree proper care, it will continue to live healthily for many years.
Gradually (渐渐地), trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, they still have their important place in nature. When a tree becomes hollow (空心的) or part of it becomes dead, it provides a home to small animals and is a source of food for many other animals.
In many ways, the life of a tree is similar (相似的) to our own life experience. When we are looking at the life of a tree, we learn about that each period (阶段)of life brings its own form of joy and challenge. Enjoy every minute of the life of the trees and take care of the trees!

Many people have to work on the weekend. Some people do not mind. Other people think it is terrible. One man thinks that working on the weekend can be dangerous. He is Graham Coates. Mr Coates worked in an office in Brighton, England.
On Saturday, June 24, he went to the office to do some work. When he got into the elevator to go home, it stopped between the floors. Mr Coates could not get out of the elevator. He was trapped (困住)! He started to shout, but no one heard him. Then Mr Coates remembered that it was a holiday in England. No one was coming to work until Tuesday!
There was nothing for Mr Coates to do. He had to wait until one of his workmates came to work and found him. With nothing to eat or drink, Mr Coates slept most of the time.
Early on Tuesday morning, the boss of the company came to work and found the elevator was not working. When the elevator was opened, Mr Coates came out. He was cold, weak and tired. He had been in the elevator for sixty-two hours!
Now Mr Coates says, “I only use the elevators that have telephones in them.”

阅读下面有关“ the different lives of kids in the city and country ” 的短文,了解城区和农村孩子们的情况,填写表格,使意思正确
Are the lives of city kids the same as those in villages? In lots of ways, they are very different. But what are the differences?
Hu Peng and his four friends decided to find them out. Earlier this month, they went to live for a week at Huagui Village near Xishui. They went door to door there and asked kids there lots of questions. They wanted to learn more about village kids’ everyday lives, so they asked questions like these: Do your parents teach you how to do housework? How much money do you usually spend on dinner? What would you do if a thief comes into your houses? They also asked 150 city kids the same question.
On April 12, the team gave a report to their class. They told about lots of differences between children’s lives in cities and those in villages. The biggest difference is independence. Hu’s team say that more than 60 percent of city kids can’t do much housework, but more than 80 percent of village kids can care for themselves.
City kids told Hu they cared about school a lot, and they had no time to wash clothes or make their beds. Village kids said they helped their parents with a lot: they cook, clean houses and feed farm animals, Hu’s team also saw that village kids had less pocket money. Many never use computers. They play in rivers or on mountains. Some don’t really like to make new friends.
Hu’s team said their trip gave them more self-confidence(自信心) because they were doing something by them-selves. But it also worried them a bit because they saw they still had a lot to learn. “When we grow up, our parents can’t take care of us,” Hu said. “We have to learn to take care of ourselves.”

During all this time I never stopped thinking about escape. When I traveled across to the other side of the island, I could see the other islands, and I said to myself, “Perhaps I can get there with a boat. Perhaps I can get back to England one day.”
So I decided to make myself a boat. I cut down a big tree, and then began to make a long hole(洞) in it. It was hard work, but about six months later, I had a very fine canoe(独木舟). Next, I had to get it down to the sea. How foolish I was! Why didn’t I think before I began working? Of course, the canoe was too heavy. I couldn’t move it! I pulled and pushed and tried everything, but it didn’t move. I was very unhappy for a long time after that.
That happened in my fourth year on the island. In my sixth year I did make myself a smaller canoe, but I didn’t try to escape in it. The boat was too small for a long journey, and I did not want to die at sea. The island was my home now, not my prison(监狱), and I was just happy to be alive. A year or two later, I made myself a second canoe on the other side of the island, I also built myself a second house there, and so I had two homes.
My life was still busy from morning to night. There were always things to do or to make. I learnt to make new clothes for myself from the skins of dead animals. They looked very strange, it is true, but they kept me dry in the rain.
I kept food and tools(工具) at both my houses, and also wild goats(山羊). There were many goats on the island, and I made fields with high fences to keep them in. They learnt to take food from me, and soon I had goats’ milk to drink every day. I also worked hard in my corn(玉米) fields. And so many years went by.
