During the last few years of his life, my dad lived just in a tiny house. He had been alone for over 20 years after losing my mom. His own mother had recently passed away, too. He just lived with himself and spent a lot of time staying _1_.
Several times a week, though, I would _2_ a walk up to his house. We would sit in the living room, _3_ tea and talk. It wasn’t anything big. We talked about sports, cars, gardening, weather, and enjoyed a laugh over old memories. It wasn’t anything too deep. It was just a simple sharing, a connection _4_ a father and a son.
Those afternoons remain some of my happiest times spent with my dad. _5_ allowed us to gently heal (治愈) any old wounds we had given each other when I was growing up. It allowed us to silently give each other time and love. It allowed us to grow closer together _6_ he left this world.
I know that when my own time in this world is done, I will _7_ another afternoon with my dad. We will sit, talk and quietly enjoy each other’s company. We will share all the love we didn’t get to share. And we will remember that _8_ forever.
One thing I learned from those afternoons is: it is never too late to spend time with those you love. It is never too _9_ to tell them that you love them. Begin today! Spend _10_ afternoon with those you love and those afternoons will remain a lifetime.
Over the school year, Mrs. Thompson _8_ lots of attention to Teddy. His mind seemed to come alive and his grades improved. By the end of the year, Teddy was doing better in school. He also had _9_ friends than before.

What if a bowl of ramen (拉面) made by a top chef was put in front of you, but you were too sick or tired to eat It wouldn’t matter how _1_ the ramen is anymore. You wouldn’t enjoy it anyway.
When the boss decides to give you an extra _2_ of the world’s best ramen on the house and lets you invite someone to eat for free, but you do not have any loved ones to _3_, not even a close friend, your feelings of loneliness will make the ramen tasteless as well.
Ramen is just like one of the things we want in life. It’s good to have nice cars, long vacations, beautiful clothes, _4_ we shouldn’t forget that the most important things in life are our health and our loved ones. We must first take _5_ care of them before we worry about not having other nice things.
Being rich is not always about having more _6_. It can also come from the heart. Having a rich heart is about finding inner peace. Once you have achieved this, you will be thankful _7_ what you have and be less troubled by _8_ you don’t have. Otherwise, all the riches in the world will not be able to fill your _9_.
The next time you are enjoying a bowl of delicious ramen with a loved one or a close friend, think about how lucky you _10_. When life brings you challenges, remember that these same people are there to help you get past difficult times.

In July, China introduced the “double reduction (双减)” policy. It hopes to lighten _1_ learning burden (负担) by reducing their homework and after-school classes. One month has passed _2_ the new semester began. How do students feel about this new policy

This is a much_7_ way to learn things than just hitting the books.”
For 13-year-old Zhang Hangming from Tianjin, the best thing about “double reduction” is the increased time in after-school activities. “We can now_8_ more time taking part in clubs and activities, such as dancing, volleyball and drama.”
Both Shen and Zhang find there are fewer exams now. But they think it’s not necessarily a good thing. “_9_ push me to study harder. Each exam shows my progress as well as my weak points,” Zhang said.
He also pointed out that when burden is lightened, self-discipline (自律) becomes the key. “Some students now spend more time _10_ when homework is finished early. But if you use all the free time to relax, you might fall behind your peers (同龄人),” he said.

When I was a boy, we had a very small television set. It only had one channel. Still, I would always be in my chair when cartoons came on.
The one I liked best was The Jetsons. It was a cartoon series set in a future that was _1_ of fantastic machines that could do anything. I always smiled when I watched it and dreamed of a day when I would have _2_ like these to do all my work, so I could just sit back and relax.
Now my life is full of machines like these. But I seem to have more to do _3_ ever. Just today I had to _4_ most of the morning downloading a new version (版本) of my word processing program _5_ I could write this article. Last week, I spent most of another morning trying to get my new coffee maker to work right. I seem to be drowning _6_ a sea of new rules and problems that come with new technology.
But don’t get me puters and machines have _7_ a lot to help all of us. I just want us to be able to use _8_ without them using us. We always seem to be busy because we’re spending all of our time _9_ these machines.

Early one morning, I saw romance in a nursing home.

When I went to see my dad that morning, I met Mr. West. Three employees (员工) were working with him. He hadn’t _3_ anything for several days. While one nurse was trying to get him to open his mouth, another nurse was trying to ask him to drink something. _4_ third nurse was standing nearby with a cup of water. Mr. West still _5_ to open his mouth.
Finally, he said something about his wife. “Go get Mrs. West,” the nurse said. “Maybe Mr. West will eat for _6_.”
A few minutes _7_, a kind-looking lady was wheeled into the room. Mr. West smiled brightly. Mrs. West patted Mr. West’s hand. With a soft voice, Mrs. West encouraged Mr. West to eat. To everyone’s _8_, Mr. West opened his mouth and began to enjoy the food. While the nurses fed him, he stared at his wife _9_ a smile on his face. Mrs. West began humming a tune (哼调子) to him.

One day, I took a taxi to the airport. We were _1_ on the right side of the road when suddenly, a black car pulled out of a parking space right in front of _2_. “_5_ did you just smile and wave at him If he hits us,we will get hurt and have to stay in _6_ for several days!”I asked.
My driver said that many people are _7_ garbage(垃圾) trucks. They run around full of “garbage” such as anger and disappointment. As they gain more and more garbage, they need a _8_ to dump(倾倒)it. Sometimes, they dump it on you, _9_ you shouldn’t take it seriously. Just smile, wave, wish them well and move on. Don’t take their garbage and bring it to _10_ people.
Smart people will not let“garbage truckers”ruin their day. Life is too short. Love the people who treat you well. Pray for the ones who don’t. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!
