Theoretical Basis
This lesson is designed on the basis of the 2017 Edition of English Curriculum Criteria for Regular High Schools, which lays stress on the comprehensive cultivation of core competencies of English learning, namely language competence, cultural consciousness, thinking quality and learning ability. It hopes to help cultivate students’ core competencies through English learning activities, including learning and understanding, applying and practicing, as well as critical creating.
Analysis of materials and students
Analysis of materials Theme and Content This lesson is aimed to activate the background knowledge and raise the interest of the students concerning the topic. Therefore,the materials of this lesson consist of 3 videos respectively about the solar system,space exploration history and the development of Chinese space exploration as well as a piece of news of Shenzhen13. Questions and activities will be put forward after students' watching videos,through which students are able to acquire information and enrich background knowledge. Analysis of Students This lesson is designed for Senior 2 students. They not only have a good knowledge of English but also are curious and active. Therefore, they are eager to get involved in discussions and group work in class. However, as freshmen, they need more instruction in in-depth reading and critical thinking.
Teaching Objectives
After this period, students are expected to be able to: 1. Acquire the information about solar system, history of space exploration and the lives of the astronauts from the videos and texts to motivate the background knowledge for the future learning. 2. Understand the efforts made to explore the space. 3. Express the thanks and wishes to the astronauts.

Explore the solar system T greets and chats with Ss. T presents the learning objectives of this period. Introduce the place we are in the space. Show the video about solar system and ask the students to figure out the name and order of the planets. Ss get familiar with the topic. Ss take down the names and order of the planets.
