Deng Qianyuan, a 15-year-old student at Guangzhou No. 7 Middle School, did something unusual recently. She put a billboard(广告牌) with 22 photos up on her campus. It showed how people killed sharks and made them into shark fin soup (鱼翅汤). By doing this, Deng wanted more people to learn about
endangered sharks and save them. According to WildAid, each year, people kill 75 million sharks for their fins and eight species of shark have died out.

International Fund for Animal Welfare, People killed about 20,000 Tibetan antelopes every year during the 1980s.

Once there were many thousands of Gourma Desert (沙漠) elephants in Mali, a country in West Africa. Now, there are fewer than four hundred.
Why did the number of the elephants drop so quickly One of the reasons is the elephants’ main lake, their only water source
(水源), dried up. Another reason is that the land which the elephants lived on was overused by humans.
To protect the elephants’ living environment, the Mali Elephant Project (MEP) was started in 2007. MEP met with local people and helped them make rules of using land and water. As a result, the situation became better and there was more food, forest and grassland.
However, from 2012 to 2016, poaching (偷猎) and illegal trade increased rapidly. Eighty-three elephants were lost in 2015 alone, and another fifty-one elephants were killed in 2016. “If this situation goes on, all the Gourma elephants will be killed by 2020,” said a member of MEP.
Luckily, the voice of MEP was heard. More organizations have joined together to educate the local people that trading
elephants is against the law. Elephant poaching has dropped to a very low level. The local people have learned to live peacefully with the elephants, one of the wildlife treasures in the world.

After visiting an animal shelter in Hefei on 15 January, my four friends and I decided to organize a volunteer team to help it. The shelter was founded by James George and his friends. George has been living in China since 2017.
We helped George overcome the language and cultural barriers (障碍), so he could better maintain the lovely animal
shelter for homeless dogs. Our team has also explored various ways to attract the attention of the public.
We realized that the publicity of the shelter on different social platforms should be our top priority. One method was to set up a special column (栏目) called “Shelter” on our WeChat account to attract people, such as a virtual adoption program.
Another way we increased the shelter’s exposure was to upload short videos on TikTok. We have gained over 900 followers on the platform. In total, there are 29 episodes(片段) about the shelter with more than 15,000 likes. The most popular one featured a little three-legged dog jumping to hug George, against the background music of Dad, where are you going. It got over 13,000 likes and 270 comments, all showing affection and respect.
Besides raising money and caring for the dogs, I also worked as an interpreter (口译员). For instance, I helped George communicate with Chinese workers, whose company kindly donated dog vaccinations (疫苗) to the shelter.
In the future, we hope that more people will support our shelter, and lend their backing to protection activities that save the lives of stray (流浪的) and abandoned dogs in China.
