I started working at the University of Leeds two years ago after changing my job.Having moved
to a new city I was looking for things to do which would enable me to meet new people in my spare time.I noticed that the Confucius Institute for Business was offering Chinese evening classes on the university campus.I also noticed there were many international students on the campus,Chinese students included.I knew if I could learn Chinese,I could practice my Chinese
with them.So together with a friend who had also recently moved to the city,I made a decision to sign up for a beginner (Level 1)class.
Part of my attraction to the challenge of learning a new language was the fact that it was not something I had previously done.My mother is from Spain and I was raised bilingual so I speak fluent Spanish, but there is a huge difference between acquiring a language in infancy and learning one from the beginning in adulthood.I was interested in finding out how I would do it. My first class took place in January 2017 and over a period of two months I attended one lesson a week, each lasting one and a half hours.
My Chinese teacher,Mr Kong, was highly energetic and engaging. Each class he would teach us thousands of new words and phrases, and then get us to act them out in role plays simulating(模仿)basic Chinese introductions and conversations.
After each lesson I felt as though my brain had been placed in a deep fat fryer for a prolonged period of time-in a good way.Despite some mistakes in the beginning, after a while I began to realize that the more my brain ached immediately after class,the more information I had taken in.I found that Chinese phrases or nursery rhymes we had covered in class would pop unexpectedly into my head at random moments,such as when in the shower or driving to work.

Finley Elias lives in the United States with her parents.Australia is on the other side of the
world,but her grandmother and two uncles live in that country and she visits them with her parents at least once a year. Finley loves watching wild animals and koalas are her favorites.Every time she was in Australia,she would go to watch koalas..“How cute they are!”she often said to herself.
Last year,when wildfires that spread on the country's south- eastern coast broke out,Finley
became very worried.She knew koalas couldn't move fast.She was afraid they'd die in the wildfires. Finley often watched news about Australia's wildfires.To her sadness,she often read news about dead animals in the fires. Every time she read about those animals,she just wanted to cry. Both of Finley's uncles are firefighters.She knew they were working hard to put out the fires.However,as time went by, she knew how difficult it was to put out the fires.When finally
there was news that the fires were out,Finley read news about how many wild animals were
killed in the fires.Though Finley was very sad,she knew being sad wouldn't really help.She decided to take action to help the koalas that have survived the fires.
Finley had once read news stories about children raising money to help wild animals.
She decided to do the same.She knew she might not be able to raise a lot of money to help her favorite animals,but she wanted to try her best to help them.But how Finley then looked at the
T-shirt she was wearing.She had an idea.She thought she could draw up an eye-catching logo to put on T-shirts,hooded sweatshirts and bags with the hope of raising money to help injured and suddenly homeless koalas. That night,Finley went to her
mother. "Mom,I want to do something to help the koalas in Australia," she said to her mother.
Her mother looked surprised at first,but then she became proud of her ten-year-old daughter.
"OK.Let's do it together.So what do you want to do to help them "asked the mother.

When I made the decision to learn Chinese,I didn't expect
it'd help me find new work.After leaming Chinese well,I decided to
find better work.And I recently landed a new job at the University of
Leeds.Although the new job is also at the University of Leeds,it
pays much more than my previous one.I'm very glad that I
made the decision to learn Chinese in the first place.Learning a
new language can be really helpful.I think everyone who wants a
better future should consider doing that.

Finley Elias lives in the United States with her parents.Australia is on the other side of the
world,but her grandmother and two uncles live in that country and she visits them with her parents at least once a year. Finley loves watching wild animals and koalas are her favorites.Every time she was in Australia,she would go to watch koalas..“How cute they are!”she often said to herself.
Last year,when wildfires that spread on the country's south- eastern coast broke out,Finley

killed in the fires.Though Finley was very sad,she knew being sad wouldn't really help.She decided to take action to help the koalas that have survived the fires.
Finley had once read news stories about children raising money to help wild animals.
She decided to do the same.She knew she might not be able to raise a lot of money to help her favorite animals,but she wanted to try her best to help them.But how Finley then looked at the
T-shirt she was wearing.She had an idea.She thought she could draw up an eye-catching logo to put on T-shirts,hooded sweatshirts and bags with the hope of raising money to help injured and suddenly homeless koalas. That night,Finley went to her
mother. "Mom,I want to do something to help the koalas in Australia," she said to her mother.
Her mother looked surprised at first,but then she became proud of her ten-year-old daughter.
