An engineer in Shenzhen named Samson March has created his own pair of glasses, which helps him travel around unfamiliar places without the need to stare at the map on his phone screen.
March said he wanted a smarter way of walking around cities. The glasses work by shooting a blue light in the left or
right eyepiece (目镜), depending on when you need to make a turn. When you reach your destination, a green light in the eyepiece will direct you to the front door.
This wasn’t as simple as just building a device that matches your phone, since it needed to be correct on the street level. March excitedly designed his own iPhone app. The app could offer correct turn directions and help him get around on the
street level. It’s his first app built in Nanshan District. The glasses were connected to the app to help him find the way.
The frames (镜框) of the glasses are made of bamboo, with holes in the arms to house a pair of printed circuit boards (电路板) and a coin battery. March said that the project was started in early September 2020. It took him around 40 hours to finish making the glasses and another 20 hours for the printed circuit boards to work properly. He finally made it.
Much like before, March is publishing all of the instructions necessary for other engineers to make their own smart glasses. He said that, all in all, the cost of components (零件) should come to around $20. He has sold the printed circuit boards that he designed to other companies. In this way, they can make more smart glasses to serve people.

A. To direct the way. B. To protect his eyesight.

Believed to have existed for more than 60 million years, crested ibises (朱鹮) are one of the oldest species of bird on Earth. Due to pollution and other human activities, the birds began to disappear in the 1960s.
In 1981, seven crested ibises were found in Yangxian county in Hanzhong, Shaanxi Province. They were believed to be the last remaining ones worldwide.
But now, they have been saved from extinction. 23 May marked the 40th anniversary of the rediscovery of the crested ibis. Researchers said that the number has risen to more than 5,000 worldwide. There are 3,000 crested ibises in Yangxian county alone.
The bird’s survival owes to China’s early protection efforts, according to Zhang Yueming, an expert who helps protect the birds in Yangxian.
On the fourth day after the discovery of the seven crested ibises, the local government put out a series of notices to protect crested ibises. For example, hunting, cutting down trees, setting off explosives(爆炸物) in the mountains, or using fertilizers (肥料) in the birds’ natural habitat are banned.
Later, it also set up the Qinling No. 1 protection station and sent four people to guard the seven birds. These guardians
worked day and night. In the daytime, they observed and recorded the birds’ habits and conditions; at night, the main job was to keep them safe.
In 1990, the Shaanxi Crested Ibis Rescue and Breeding Centre was set up. At the centre, crested ibises are artificially bred(人工饲养) and can receive timely treatment when they are sick or hurt. Over the next 30 years, they also explored and
created a complete system of artificial breeding techniques (人工繁殖技术), laying a foundation for the birds’ later reintroduction into the wild.
“China’s protection of crested ibises is a paragon (典范) in the world’s history of preserving endangered wildlife,” Zhang told China Daily.
