Two years ago, our 14-year-old son, Ben, asked us for a set of drums for his birthday. At first, we were very much against the idea because of the noise. “It’s better than watching TV or playing computer games in my free time,” Ben argued, “and it’ll keep me out of trouble.” In the end we gave in. “All right,” we said, “but you must consider the rest of the family and the neighbours when you play.”
That was just the beginning. Because drums are not the easiest instruments to transport (运送), the other members of Ben’s band started appearing at our home with their guitars and other instruments. So, from 3 pm to 6 pm on Saturday, the house shakes to the noise of their instruments and their teenage singing.
At least Ben’s hobby has been good for our health: whenever the band starts practicing, my husband and I go out for a long walk. And I must
admit that, although their music may sound a little strange, they are a friendly and polite group of young men. I cannot judge their musical skill, after all, I didn’t expect my parents’ generation to like the same music as I did when I was a teen. but they do play regularly in local clubs for young people.

For a long time, drinking morning tea has been an important part of life for Guangdong people. There are generally two types of tea drinkers. One is the regular tea drinkers. Jimmy spent all day helping others, giving out food to the poor and looking after abandoned animals which had no owners. He hardly did anything for himself.
One day, he met a famous doctor who thought the boy’s case was so special that he decided to visit him. So, with some medical equipment, the doctor tried to record what was happening inside the boy. What he discovered was surprising.
Each time the boy did something good, something like a thousand little angels (天使) got together around the boy’s heart. That explained the boy’s happiness. The doctor continued studying until he discovered that we all have our own angels inside us. When it starts to rain, most of us run inside to avoid getting wet. But have you noticed that some animals love to be out in the storm One of them is the earthworm (蚯蚓). People used to believe that earthworms left their homes on wet days in order to avoid drowning (淹没). The idea was that the rain water flooded the worms’ underground homes. The worms were then forced to leave and stay on higher ground so they would not drown.
Some scientists think that theory is all wet. Instead, they believe one reason why earthworms can live a long time in water is that they can breathe in water. In fact, they are great swimmers! This means they are in no danger of drowning in their underground homes like people used to think.
One thing we know for sure is that earthworms need to keep their skin wet. This is because they actually breathe through their skin. Earthworms breathe oxygen, just like humans do. However, earthworms take in oxygen through their skin. This needs that an earthworm’s skin stays wet. This explains why you’ll never find an earthworm sunning itself on a hot day!
Life under the surface of the ground suits the earthworm perfectly. Even if the ground surface is dry, the soil underground is wet and cool.
Scientists are still not exactly sure why earthworms come out at all, though. Maybe it is to move to a new home. They may come to the surface to find friends. Or maybe they just come out because they can!
