阅读理解阅读下列短文,从每题A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出一个能回答所提问题 或完成所给句子的最佳答案。
These days, the food that you buy comes from lots of different countries. When you go to the supermarket, you will see some kinds of fruits and vegetables you have never seen before. Have a look in your kitchen ,fridge, cupboard and fruit bowl and check where the food comes from. Perhaps there are apples from California, lamb from New Zealand, or potatoes from Egypt. You will probably be surprised how far food travels to get to your plate. This journey, from field to plate, is called food miles. A food mile is the distance that food travels from the farmer's field to the person who buys the food. Nowadays, food often travels thousands of miles to get to the consumer(消费者). Why is this, and what are the influences of these long distances
Traditionally, farmers sold their food in the local market, so the food didn't have to travel very far. The consumers also did not travel very far because they went to their local market to buy the food. This was a good system for farmers and consumers. However, there were some disadvantages. For example, consumers could only buy food that farmers produced locally. In addition, they could only get food that was in season. Now, because of modern technology, food comes from all over the world. We do not have to wait for spring or summer to buy strawberries or tomatoes. They are available in winter if we want.
Some countries have to import(进口) most of their food. This is because they have difficult climates. The United Arab Emirates(UAE), for example, gets 85% of its food from other countries. Even food made in the UAE often uses imported materials.
What's wrong with food miles Is this not a good way of increasing international trade I believe these miles are worrying for a number of reasons. First of all, because food travels such long distances, we need more planes, trucks, and ships to move the food. This means we use more oil or gas, so there is more pollution and more global warming. In addition, food that travels a long way is not fresh and usually not very tasty. Tomatoes, for example, are picked early and stored for their long journeys. For this reason, they are usually tasteless when they get to the consumer. Local food has a better taste, and it also reduces(减少) the amount of global pollution. We need to buy more local food.

Do you remember your dreams Do people have the same dreams Why do I dream
There are many questions about dreams. We dream during the REM (快速眼动) stage of sleep. We have about five periods of REM sleep during the night. The first REM cycle (周期) lasts about 10 minutes. As the night goes on, the REM cycle gets longer. By early morning, the REM cycle can last up to 90 minutes. Usually, it is in this last REM cycle that we remember our dreams.
Dreams change as people age. People may have several dreams each night. Some are like films and usually in color. They come to us over and over again. That may be because the dreamer is worrying about something and trying to find the answer. Sometimes we wake up with a good feeling from a dream. But often we can’t remember the dreams clearly.
It is reported that too much dreaming is bad for our health. The more we sleep, the longer we dream. The mind is hard at work. That is why we may have a long sleep and still feel tired when we wake up.
Do you feel a little sleepy after lunch Well, that’s normal. Your body naturally slows down then. What should you do about it Don’t drink coffee, take a nap, instead. There are many advantages of a daily nap. First of all, you can remember things better and make fewer mistakes. Also, you can learn things more easily after taking a nap. A 20-minute nap can reduce your pressure. Finally, a nap can make you cheerful.
But, there are some simple rules you should follow about taking a nap. First, take a nap at noon, about eight hours after you wake up. In general, a 20-minute nap is the best. If you sleep longer, you may fall into a deep sleep. After waking up, you will feel worse. Also, you should set an alarm clock. That way, you can fully relax during the nap. You don’t have to keep looking at the clock so that you don’t oversleep. Now, next time you feel sleepy after lunch, don’t get stressed. Put your head down, close your eyes and take a nap.

阅读理解阅读下列短文,从每题A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出一个能回答所提问题 或完成所给句子的最佳答案。
We choose food to eat every day. We might know some of the reasons for the choices, but food scientist Dr. Brian Wansink has found that we are unaware of 90% of our food decision. Here are some “big ideas” in his research on the hidden power that drives our eating.
Food for thought
In one of the studies, Dr. Wansink made volunteers eat chocolate yogurt in a dark room. He told them the yogurt was with a taste of strawberry even though they were all eating chocolate. Finally, 65% of volunteers described the yogurt as having a “nice strawberry flavor!”
The research shows that our imagination has an effect on our taste. If you expect a food to taste good, it will. So take a moment before you eat your unpleasant healthy food to remind yourself that you are eating delicious fish and chips.
Our eyes eat first
How your food looks is just as important as how it tastes. Dr. Wansink gave cakes to three groups of people. The cakes were exactly the same but served in different ways.
①Group one got the cake on a nice plate.
②Group two got the cake on a paper plate.
③Group three got the cake on a piece of paper.
Dr. Wansink then asked the people how much they would pay for each cake.
①Group one who got the cake on a nice plate would pay $1.27.
②Group two who got the cake on a paper plate would pay 76 cents.
③Group three who got the cake on a piece of paper would pay 53 cents.
Take some time to make your healthy food look amazing. Cut your fruit into a flower shape and put your colorful vegetables on nice plates. This works really well for your appetite(胃口).
Out of sight, out of stomach
Dr. Wansink also found that when people sat at the desk full of snacks, they ate 71% more of snacks a day than those sitting near a clear table. We eat what we see. As a result, put all the unhealthy food in your fridge.
Hide it and make it really hard to get to. The closer bad food is, the more you eat it.
1. How many ideas are mentioned in the passage
A.3 B.4 C.5 D.6
2. Why did the volunteers say the yogurt had a strawberry flavor
A. They didn’t like chocolate yogurt. B. The yogurt had a taste of strawberry.
C. The yogurt was made from strawberry. D. They thought they had eaten strawberry yogurt.
3. How can we make ourselves eat more vegetables we don’t like
A. Have the same vegetable every day. B. Serve vegetables on lovely plates.
C. Put vegetables on a piece of paper. D. Eat vegetables as soon as they are cooked.
4. To avoid eating too many snacks, we should NOT __________.
A. hide them. B. put them on the desk.
C. leave them in the fridge. D. make them really hard to get to.
5. What is the passage mainly about
A. Useful skills on selling food.
B. Ways to make healthy eating easier.
C. Ideas about how to avoid too many snacks.
D. Experiments to find out people’s favorite food.

We often find that weekends and holidays feel so short while classes and work feel so long. Actually, though, we know that this is not true. But we still wonder where that strange feeling comes from.
In fact, this is one of the ways that we’re tricked by time, according to the website. All that is interesting. The website lists several wrong impressions we often have about time. Let’s have a look.
First of all, emotions affect our time-keeping abilities. Negative emotions(消极情绪), especially anxiety and boredom, make time seem longer because they make us concentrate more on the passage of time. However, when we are enjoying ourselves, we pay more attention to what we are doing and are likely to lose track of (失去对……的意识) time.
Here is another example. In 2007, a group of scientists carried out a test. In the test, people fell 50 meters into a safety net and were then asked about their experience. Although the experience took shorter than 3 seconds, the people thought it was much longer than it actually was.
This is because of the way our bodies reply to danger, according to the scientists. Our bodies produce a chemical called adrenaline (肾上腺素) when we are faced with danger. It allows us to concentrate better so that we can stay alive. As a result, we are able to remember far more details ( 细 节 )over a short period of time, which makes it seem like time is going more slowly.
Another situation when we make mistakes about time is when we take afternoon naps (午觉). Have you ever had trouble telling what time it is after a long nap That’s because the best amount of time for a nap is 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, you enter a new stage of sleep called slow-wave sleep. If you wake up mid-way in this stage, it will take a while before you can correctly perceive (感知) time again.
Yes, time can be mysterious and there is no way to control it. So, perhaps the best thing to do is to make good use of every minute.
1. According to the passage, what possibly makes people feel so long

A. Negative emotions. B. Positive emotions. C. Adrenaline. D. Scientists.
3. According to the passage, in which situation do we make mistakes about time
A. We have many problems left in the test paper, but the time is up.
B. We have a math test when we fall down from a high place.
C. We may have trouble telling what time it is after a long nap.
D. We go to school on the school bus as usual on weekdays .
4. According to the passage , what will NOT happen when we are faced with danger
A. Our bodies will produce a chemical called adrenaline.
B. We are able to feel that time seems to go more slowly.
C. Adrenaline will make us concentrate better to stay alive.
D. We will forget far more details over a short period of time.
5.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage
A. Negative emotions, especially anxiety and boredom, make time seem longer because
they make us concentrate more on the passage of time.
B. When we are enjoying ourselves, we pay more attention to what we are doing and we are able to feel like time is going more slowly.
C. If we wake up mid-way after a long nap, it will take a while before we can correctly perceive time again.

Deep in the research lab ,the 16-year-old American student Alon Millet carefully drops a special solution (溶液) onto rows of beans in a plastic tray (托盘). It’s something he’s been doing for nearly three years. This high school junior is trying to help fight world hunger.
Last year, Millet was one of just four students who received a $10,000 (62,500yuan) award from US Agency for International Development ,an organization that is working to end poverty (贫穷). He was chosen from 1,700 high schools in more than 70 countries.
Millet’s experiments “could change the way plants are grown in the developing world, protecting them against drought (干旱) and natural disasters like typhoons”, said Courtney Mason, a program manager at the agency.
One day more than three years ago, Alon’s father, Yoav Millet, said that an Israeli company had used a protein (蛋白质) solution to make trees grow larger. And that, in turn, helped to produce more paper with fewer trees.
“So I started thinking, what else could this be used for ” Alon Millet said.
He chose bean seeds because the bean is an important crop in India, China and Southeast Asia. It provides a good amount of protein and grows quickly.
After three years of repeatedly putting the seeds into the solution, measuring, testing and examining, he proved the compound (化合物) in the solution could also make beans grow larger and survive in difficult environments. The process (过程) also does not need genetic modification (基因改造), which cannot be used in many European countries.
Donna Leonardi, who advises Millet, said she sees a mature (成熟的) researcher in Millet. Millet, she said, doesn’t have a personal connection (联系) to the bean. He doesn’t even like how they taste. Yet he sees the “big picture” in what his research could do for people. And he’s not afraid to fail. He sees problems as challenges.
Millet is now on his 26th experiment with his beans, continuing his search for a better understanding of how the compound is changing the bean.

It started with a trip to the waste transport station.
In 2011, Miranda Wang visited a waste transport station in her hometown of Vancouver. She and her friend Jeanny Yao, now a senior at the University of Toronto, were shocked to see the huge amount of plastic in the station.
So they decided to do something. As seniors in high school, they read through the hundreds of pages of scientific papers and had an idea: find bacteria ( 细菌 ) that can degrade ( 降解 ) plastic. The University of British Columbia invited Wang and Yao to use their lab space to start working on their project.
Now four years in, Wang and Yao finally made it. They are turning their high school science project into a multi-million dollar, award-winning business. They set up BioCellection last May, a
company that takes plastic pollution out of the ocean and then uses bacteria to break down these plastics into a product used in the textile (纺织) industry.
“Basically, we recycle ocean plastic pollution into usable materials,” Wang said.
BioCellection recently won the Grand Prize in Pennvention. It was also the top undergraduate team and the winner of the Social Impact Prize in the Wharton Undergraduate Business Plan Competition.
Though Wang and Yao have been developing their idea throughout college, this year they take their project to the next level, getting two patents ( 专利 ) and nearly $300,000 in funding. BioCellection makes money by both clearing plastic from the ocean and selling the product produced from the waste plastic. Under their business plan, BioCellection aims to become a $100 million company, taking 243,000 tons of plastic out of the ocean every year. “The most sustainable (可持续 的) technology comes from sustainable business,”they said.

A GOOD joke can be the hardest thing to understand when studying a foreign language.
There’s more to learn understanding a joke in a foreign language than understanding vocabulary and grammar.
Being able to understand local jokes is often seen as an ice-breaker for a language learner who wants to build friendships with native speakers.
“I always felt that humor was a ceiling (上限) that I could never break through,” said Hannah Ashley, who once studied Spanish in Madrid. “I could never speak to people on the same level as I would speak to a native English speaker. I almost came across as quite a boring person because all I could talk about was facts.”
In fact, most of the time, jokes are only funny for people who share a cultural background or understand humor in the same way.
Chinese-American comedian (喜剧演员) Joe Wong (Huang Xi) found this out first-hand (亲身经历). He had achieved great success doing stand-up comedy (美式单口相声) in the US, but when he returned to China in 2008 for his first live show in Beijing, he discovered that his humor didn’t translate. People didn’t think his Chinese jokes were as funny as his English ones.
In Australia, many foreigners find understanding jokes about sports to be the biggest headache. “The hardest jokes are related to rugby (橄榄球) because I know nothing about rugby,” said Melody Cao, who was once a student in Australia. “When I heard jokes I didn’t get, I just laughed along.”
In the other two major English-speaking countries, the sense of humor is also different. British comedian Simon Pegg believes that while Britons use irony (讽刺)-basically, saying something they don’t mean to make a joke--every day, people in the US don’t see the point of using it so often. “British jokes tend to (倾向于) be more subtle (不易察觉) and dark, while American jokes are direct with their meanings, a bit like Americans themselves,” he wrote in a newspaper.
1. By using the underlined sentence, the writer means that _______.
A. you need to learn about a culture to understand its jokes
B. local jokes can help you to understand the local culture better
C. making jokes can help you form friendships with native speakers
D. understanding jokes requires excellence in vocabulary and grammar
2. What can we guess about Hannah Ashley _______
A. She feels confident in using Spanish.
B. She believes that it’s better to tell the facts than jokes.
C. She thinks that Spanish people do not have much of a sense of humor.
D. Not being able to understand their humor makes her seem boring to Spanish people.
3. Joe Wong is used as an example to _______.
A. prove that it can be difficult to translate jokes
B. show that there are cultural differences in humor
C. show that your language ability influences your sense of humor
D. suggest that bilingual people (双语者) have no problems making people laugh
4. What are American jokes like _______
A. Ironic. B. Subtle. C. Direct. D. Dark
5. From the article, we can learn that _______.
A. Americans might not be able to enjoy British jokes
B. British people’s dark jokes often make people uncomfortable
C. English native speakers can all understand English jokes easily
D. jokes about sports are the most difficult ones for foreign people

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong.
Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles(肌肉).
The study also found the effect(效果) is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners. Scans showed that grey matter density(密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference. “Our findings suggest that the structure(结构) of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.
It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn. Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible (灵活的),” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings had the same result in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and thirty-four. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.
1.From Paragraph 1 and Paragraph 2, we can learn that ___________.

A major development to self-driving cars may change the way we will drive in the future. Google, the leading company in self-driving technology, has changed its develop plan. It had driverless cars built by car factories, but now it will start building its own cars.
Google has started to build some kinds of experimental electric self- driving cars that look like a Smart car or Fiat 500. There is no steering wheel(方向盘),gas pedal or brake. The only things a human passenger controls are a red “e-stop” button(按钮) for fear stops and a start button. The car’s only “friendly” face is designed to make it help people accept self-driving technology.
Google workers took part in a long experiment, in which they used self-driving cars for their usual travel to work. No accident happened, but Google’s heads realized that depending on a human passenger to drive in an emergency(紧急情况) wouldn’t work because they may be reading, working , or sleeping. Now the self-driving car drives by itself if the driver takes his hands off the wheel for over ten seconds.
Google’s self-driving cars are now limited(限定) to a speed of 25 miles per hour for safety reasons. The cars aren’t allowed to drive on highways. However, a Google engineer said that once the cars are solved to run safely, we can drive at the speed of 50, even 80 miles an hour.
Google recently announced that its cars had covered 700,000 miles of public roads, and they were now running in busy city streets. People who love self-driving cars say this will improve transport by making roads safer, cutting down accident, and making less pollution.
Of course, there’s no need to look for parking at a crowded shopping mall. Instead, users could let their self-driving cars drop them off to park itself. A mother who took a test ride said that having the car would allow her more time to catch up with her son. The cars could also allow people who might not be able to drive to enjoy the hand-free driving. And drunk driving Not a problem. It is very likely that by 2020, driverless cars will be common. Do you believe so
1. What equipment do the self-driving cars have
A. A gas pedal. B. A brake.
C. A steering wheel. D. An “e-stop” button and a start button
2. How fast can people drive a self-driving car now
A. 25 miles an hour. B. 50 miles an hour.
C. 80 miles an hour. D. 100 miles an hour.
3. What has Google company already done
A.Google has changed its development plan and helped other factories make cars.
B.Google has already had car-testing experiments in all the states in the US.
C.Google has realized some problems and tried to solve them.
D.Google has asked its own workers to buy the cars and travel to work.
4. Which advantage of self-driving cars is not mentioned
A.They can start the engine by itself and make people’s hands completely free.
B.They can help to solve air pollution and reduce car accident.
C.They can park by themselves and make mothers look after young kids easily.
D.They can help those disabled people to enjoy the driving.
5. What will happen if emergency happens when someone is driving a driverless car
A.If the driver presses the “e-stop” button, the car will drive by itself at once to keep safe.
B.If the driver is reading, working or sleeping, he can’t handle the situation in time.
C.The car’s friendly face will work and help the driver accept the situation and stay calm.
D.The self-driving car will break the speed limit and run at a speed that the driver tells it.

1. According to this passage, food miles means_______________.
A. the origins of the food B. the influences of longs distances
C. the journey from field to plate D. the disadvantages of imported food
2. Some countries, like the UAE, have to import most of their food because of______.
A. long distances B. difficult climates
C. fresh and tasty food D. modern technology
3.In the last paragraph ,the writer mainly wants to encourage readers to ________.
A. use imported food often B. increase international trade
C. travel long distances D. buy more local food
4.According to the passage ,which of the following is NOT TRUE
A. At present, food often travels a long way to get to the consumers.
B. The United Arab Emirates gets its food from other countries completely.
C. Because of modern technology, it’s easy to import food from all over the world
D. If we use more oil or gas to carry food, it can cause pollution and more global warming.
5. This passage is mainly talking about ________.
A. how local food travels from field to your plate
B. where different kinds of food come from
C. how and why some countries import their food
D. what food miles means and its influences on people’s lives

However, the pair's main focus is on the influence of this technology. “We hope that the younger generation would never see plastic pollution.” They said.
