2. The rest are from every part of the world: Asia, Africa, Central America, South America, Australia and other European countries. 其余的人来自世界各地:亚洲、非洲、中美洲、南美洲、澳洲和其他欧洲国家。
the rest “剩余部分, 其余; 其余的人”,
the rest of + 名词/代词, “剩余的······” , 作主语时其谓语的形式要由of后名词的数而定。
eg:The rest of her life was very happy.
她的余生是很幸福的。
Some of the students are playing football, the rest (of them) are playing basketball. 那些学生中,有些人在踢足球,其余的在打篮球。
[拓展] rest 还有“休息”的意思, 既可以做动词, 也可以做名词

3. In the 1970s and 1980s,that changed.在20世纪70年代和80年代, 这种情况改变了。

[辨析] “number”的不同用法
the number of ……的 数量 后加可数名词复数,作主语时, 谓语用单数形式 The number of homeless people has increased.无家可归者的人数已经增加了。
a number of 许多, 大量 后加可数名词复数, 作主语时, 谓语用复数形式 A large number of students are ill these days because of the flu.这些天我们班的许多学生都因为流感而病了。
5. It is important that people from different cultures can live together in one country. 来自不同文化的人们能够一起生活在一个国家是重要的。
it在句中作形式主语, 实际主语是that引导的从句。
important, impossible, necessary, proper等形容词后的that从句, 无论主语是第几人称, 谓语都可以用动词原形。
eg:It is necessary that he come back in time.
他及时回来是必要的。
