1. If you are not part of a group, it can be difficult for you to be accepted. 如果你不是这个组的一分子, 别人就难以接受你。

One morning, as Sam was walking by a group of students, he smiled at them. 一天早上, 当萨姆从一群学生旁边走过时, 他向他们微笑了。
as conj. “当……时; 随着; 因为”, 引导时间状语从句, 侧重于主句与从句的动作同时进行。
eg:You will learn more knowledge as you grow older. 随着年龄的增长, 你会学越来越多的知识。
as prep.“像; 如同; 作为 ”
eg:As a student, we should do what we can to protect the environment.作为学生, 我们应该做一些能做的事来保护环境。
[拓展] “as” 的不同用法
as long as “只要”, 引导条件状语从句
eg:You can catch up with others as long as you work hard. 只要你努力就能赶上别人。
as soon as “一……就……”, 引导时间状语从句
eg:I will tell you the truth as soon as you come back.
你一回来我就告诉你真相。
[拓展] “as” 的不同用法
as long as “只要”, 引导条件状语从句
eg:You can catch up with others as long as you work hard. 只要你努力就能赶上别人。
as...as... “和……一样……”, 表示同级比较, 两个as中间用形容词或副词的原级
eg: This jacket is as new as yours. 这件夹克衫与你的一样新。
[拓展] “as” 的不同用法
as...as possible=as...as one can/could
“尽可能...../尽某人所能......”
eg:You should work as hard as possible. 你应该尽你所能努力工作。

reach 在本句中意思是“打动;赢得;影响”
eg:Sam's ability to reach a number of friends is the result of friendliness and kindness. 萨姆之所以赢得很多朋友, 乃是友好和善良的结果。
4. Somehow, he had to adapt to this new environment. 不管怎样, 他得适应新环境。
somehow “不管怎样”
eg:We have to arrive there before seven o'clock somehow. 我们无论如何必须七点钟前赶到。
somehow “不知怎么的”
eg:At that moment, I couldn't remember anything, somehow. 在那一刻, 不知怎么的, 我什么都想不起来了。
adapt “适应”, adapt to “适应......”.
eg:I must adapt myself to the new situation. 我必须适应新形势。

Those peasant workers have adapted well to the life in the city. 那些农民工已经很适应这座城市的生活了。
5. Later, he noticed the boy coming towards him in the hall with a warm smile on his face. 后来, 在走廊里他注意到那个男孩满脸微笑地向他走来。
notice 同 see,watch 等感官动词一样, 接复合宾语时, 宾语补足语要用不带to的动词不定式或动词的-ing形式。
eg:She noticed the man look at her several times. 她觉察到那个男子朝她看了好几次。
I noticed him looking into the window. 我注意到他正在往窗子里看。
6. Soon the boy asked Sam to join him and his group of friends for lunch. 不久,那个男同学邀请萨姆与他和他的一群朋友一起吃午饭。
join sb. “与·······一起(做同样的事);和·····做伴”
eg:Will you join us for lunch 和我们一起吃午饭好吗
join 还可表示“加入(成为·······的一员)”。
eg:He joined the army in 1986. 他1986年入伍。

join in 和 take part in都可以表示 “参加活动”。
attend “参加或出席正式的活动或场合, 如婚礼, 会议等”。
eg:How many people will attend tomorrow’s meeting 会有多少人参加明天的会议。
7. Before he knew it, Sam had a group of friends, and they all wanted to help him learn French. 不知不觉中, 萨姆交往了一群朋友, 他们都想帮他学法语。
before “在······前”, 可指时间和位置。
eg:Remember the words now before you forget them.趁着没忘, 现在就记记那些单词吧。
It was three hours before he reached our school. 他三小时后才到我们学校。
