Module 4 Seeing the doctor
Unit 2 We have played football for a year now.
(Reading and writing)
Part 1 Analysis of the teaching material
This module is about health, hygiene, and healthy living. The passage in this unit consists of four short stories of four different people. These four stories tell readers about these four peoples’ different ways of doing exercise. Students will learn more about present perfect with “for” and “since” in this unit.
Part 2 Analysis of the students
Students of Grade 8 have grasped some basic reading skills, such as skimming and scanning. They are quick-minded and thirsty for new knowledge. Students are familiar with this topic--- health, and have gained some common knowledge about health and exercise. After learning the first unit in this module, they can already talk about illnesses and symptoms, and can role-play the doctor patient conversations. They also know that sometimes illnesses come from unhealthy life style.
Part 3 Teaching aims
Based on the new standard curriculum and the syllabus, the learning objectives are listed as follows.
1 Knowledge objectives:
—To master the key words and phrases (New words: well, active, daily, weak, exercise, pet)
—To understand some difficult sentences to comprehend the passage better. (1.I have had him for three months now and I feel really healthy.2. Since then, it has become part of my life.)
2 Skills objectives: At the end of this lesson, students will:
—Read and understand passages about health routines, and can talk about their own health routines.
— Be able to write about health problems and give health advice to their friends or families.
3 Moral aims: by the end of the lesson, students will:
—Understand the importance of exercise in healthy living.
—Be aware of their own unhealthy habits such as: playing too much computer games, and not enough daily exercise.
—Develop a healthy living habit and do more exercise every day.
Part 4 Key and difficult points
It can be difficult for students to
1: To use the new words and phrases correctly and skillfully.
2: To get an overall understanding of the whole text.
3: To retell the passage in a certain order.
4: To write down their own stories and give health advice to others
Part 5 Teaching and learning methods
In my lesson, the follow methods will be used: PWP, task-based approach.
Part 6 Teaching aids:
I will use the multimedia to increase the teaching capacity and improve the teaching efficiency.
Part 7 Teaching procedures
The teaching procedures consist of six steps.
Step 1 Warm up & Lead in
1. Listening to a song about exercise
2. Watch pictures and talk about healthy and unhealthy activities.
3. Ask and answer some questions:(1) What did you do last weekend (2)Did you do something healthy, or unhealthy
(Purpose: After these two questions, students can associate the language to their own lives, which makes learning more efficient and create a real context for them to use the language not only to express ideas but also to think.)
Step 2 Fast reading
First, students are supposed to read the passage very quickly and answer 3 questions:
(1) Who are the four people Match them with the five pictures you have just seen.
(2) What is the passage about
(Purpose:In this task students will scan the passage and find out key words to do matching instead of read it sentence by sentence. They will also know that main ideas can be found in the titles. Then they develop and practice their scanning and skimming skills.)
Step 3 Detailed reading
1. Read for problems:
Task1. Read the passage carefully and find out the four persons’ health problems if they have.
Anna:
Wang Wei:
Thomas:
Richard:
Task2: Ask students to talk about the four people’s problems and try to give advice to help them. (use “you should/shouldn’t……”or “Do/Don’t…”)
By finishing task2, students can know how to give advice, and will be curious about what the people in the story will do next.
2. Read for ways to change and results
Ask students to read again and find out their ways to solve the problems and how they feel now.
In this activity, students get to know the third reading strategy, that is: Finding the sequence of the events will help us understand what we are reading.
3. Get the structure of this passage
Help students to understand the passage as a whole by getting a clear understanding of its structure.
By summarizing the structure, students also know how to tell a story about health problems.
Step 4 Post-reading
1. retell the passage
put the whole class into 4 groups and each group will retell a story with the help of the structure we have already summarized.
Retelling is a good way to remember the details, it can also help them to practice using the new words and phrases.
2. The story of Colin (group work)
Look at the pictures of Colin. Use the way they have learnt to tell the story of Colin.
3. Our own problems and stories
Talk about your own or your friend’s health problems with your partner, and give advice to each other. Then write them down as a short passage.
I will ask some students to read in front of the class.
In this step students have enough chance to practice what they have learnt, express their own ideas and think whether their own lives are healthy or not.
