Signs can sometimes be seen at the entrance of a house, expressing that a tramp(流浪汉) has passed. This special sign-language is frequently 36 by tramps to inform their 37 whether the host of a certain house is friendly or unfriendly, and to 38 them the trouble of making unnecessary calls.
Quite 39 one day, I came across a real tramp. He was such a rare sight these days that I stood some distance away and watched him. He was dressed just as a tramp should be 40 , old worn trousers, and a jacket many sizes too big for him. On his head there was a battered old hat and his boots were so old and worn; they were almost coming into 41 . But the man himself looked cheerful as if he had not been a 42 in the world. He rubbed his nose with his forefinger, 43 a funny turn, laid a small parcel by the front gate, and began 44 a sign made by a former caller. Although the sign was meaningless to me, it must have been 45 , for the tramp’s face lit up with 46 . He entered the front gate confidently and rang the bell. When the door opened, I saw him 47 his hat but couldn’t hear his words. The 48 was very short indeed, for no sooner had he spoken a few words than the door closed fiercely in his face. I felt 49 for him as he walked 50 out of the house, But just as quickly, his face lit up again and he moved quickly towards the gate. There he stopped, looked at the sign, and 51 his head seriously as if he had made a bad mistake. 52 deeply into his pockets, he produced a piece of chalk, rubbed out the 53 sign and made a new one in its place. He stared at it for a moment smiling to himself, then gathered his 54 , pushed back his hat and began walking towards the next house at an unhurried 55 , whistling as he went along.

Scores of dead pigs have been retrieved from a Central China waterway, just weeks after thousands were discovered in Shanghai's Huangpu River.
Authorities have been pulling the carcasses from Liuyang River in Hunan province since Saturday. More than 70 pigs had been retrieved as of Sunday, but an official figure has yet to be released.
The carcasses were probably dumped by pig farmers upstream and were carried along the river due to recent rainstorms, the Xiaoxiang Morning Herald reported on Monday, quoting an unnamed agriculture, forestry and water resources official for Changsha's Kaifu district.
“We have to immediately remove them in a sanitary way to avoid water pollution and contamination,” the official said.
Wu Guohua, another official, said it is rare to see such a large amount of dead pigs in the river.
The district environmental protection bureau said it will closely monitor the river's water quality to guarantee residents' safety.
“No bird flu virus was detected on the dead pigs,” Tan Jingming, deputy director of the Changsha animal disease prevention and control center, said.
A series of similar discoveries have been reported across China since residents started complaining on March 5 about finding dead pigs in Huangpu River.
There has been an abnormally high number of dead hogs following an outbreak of porcine circovirus, a common disease, plus changeable weather this winter, the Ministry of Agriculture said on its website.
“Authorities should seriously investigate where the dead pigs come from and harshly punish the pig dumpers,” said a resident surnamed Zhang, who said the situation posed a great threat to people's safety, especially after a new and deadly strain of bird flu was detected.
The discovery of tens of thousands of pig carcasses nationwide has raised concerns about how the country deals with numerous dead pigs every year.
The National Bureau of Statistics said China had about 700 million pigs in 2012, of which 18 million died of disease.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, pig farmers can get a subsidy of 80 yuan ($12) for each pig dead of disease. Regulations require animals that died in this way to be disposed of in a sanitary way, such as burial at least 1.5 meters deep or cremated.
But because the subsidy application process is complicated, many pig farmers choose to sell the dead pigs to illegal buyers, said Li Waiguang, a farmer in Yingtan, Jiangxi province.
“If authorities crack down on dead pig transactions, farmers will dump the dead into the nearest rivers,” he added.
Li suggested authorities establish sanitary treatment stations for dead animals to help farmers.
60. Which of the following statements is true?
A. Nearly 70 pigs had been retrieved, but the government has not released the exact figure.
B. The government will wipe away the pollution in the river in the near future.
C. The district environmental protection bureau has already monitored the river's water quality to guarantee residents' safety.
D. The Ministry of Agriculture said that there had been an abnormally high number of dead hogs because of a common disease and changeable weather this winter.
61. Which one can replace “crack down on” in the last but one paragraph?
A. put down
B. bring down
C. set down
D. get down
62. What is the author’s attitude towards the dead pigs?

B. indifferent
C. objective
D. optimistic

While their jobs may not be providing them with great excitement, respondents of the Win2000 Salary Survey are saying that they are pretty pleased with their current positions. In fact almost three-quarters of them report a modest to more than average sense of job satisfaction and a little more than ten percent say they are “very satisfied” with their work. So why then does an overwhelming majority of this contented group also report that they are considering changing jobs?
The easy and most popular theory says that it's all about the money. IT professionals with highly-prized skills in a very tight job market play salary-stick-em-up by raising their salary demands with each job hop. But this theory calls for a closer look. According to a recent Gartner Group IT market study, enterprises that are experiencing high rates of turnover on average actually offer higher salaries. The Gartner study cites "lack of career development opportunities" as the single most reported reason employees leave companies.
Mark Pecoraro, president and CEO of SuccessFactors.com, a workforce management firm, tends to agree: “One of the things we see is the strong desire of these professionals to keep on the cutting edge. These employees are taking control of building their knowledge tool sets and essentially writing their own career tickets.”
“INDUS Corporation, a Washington, D.C.-based IT firm, is a wonderful place to work,” says SearchWin2000 salary survey respondent James Voorhees. Voorhees got his start in IT as an INDUS technical writer. Now, he works as a network administrator, crediting his employer for creating a work environment that let him develop the skills he needed in order to change careers.
“An important part of the company culture is an emphasis on employee satisfaction," Voorhees says, pointing to "the company's willingness to let employees try new things ... which has given me several great opportunities to learn and gain experience in networking and software engineering.”
But INDUS' success relies on a steady series of contract work. Voorhees believes that his status as an IT newbie(新手) makes him at risk if these contracts should dry up. As a result he has adopted a mindset that is ready to seize an outside opportunity if it should present itself.
63. According to the Win2000 Salary survey, most of the respondents .
A. are considering switching their jobs
B. are disappointed at their incomes
C. are most satisfied with their work
D. are modest about themselves
64. The expression “keep on the cutting edge” can be understood as “ ”.
A. maintain good relations with other employees
B. stay in the leading position in the field
C. avoid suffering resulting from lack of money
D. seek harmony between body and spirit
65. What can be learnt about James Voorhees from the passage?
A. He works as a technical writer in INDUS Corporation.
B. He is looking forward to an opportunity to change his career.
C. He is not pleased with the working environment of his company.
D. He speaks highly of his employer for letting him learn new things.
66. The author wrote this passage mainly to inform us that .
A. job hopping does not always lead to better salary
B. well-trained professionals are most needed in the future
C. career development is the key to job satisfaction
D. new technology will bring about better opportunities
D
For thousands of Canadians, bad service is neither make-believe nor amusing. It is an aggravating and worsening real-life phenomenon that encompasses behavior ranging from indifference and rudeness to naked hostility and even physical violence. Across the country, better business bureaus report a lengthening litany of complaints about contractors, car dealers, and repair shops, moving companies, airlines and department stores. There is almost an adversarial feeling between businesses and consumers.
Experts say there are several explanations for ill feeling in the marketplace. One is that customer service was an early and inevitable casualty when retailers responded to brutal competition by replacing employees with technology such as 1~800 numbers and voice mail. Another factor is that business generally has begun placing more emphasis on getting customers than on keeping them. Still another is that strident, frustrated and impatient shoppers vex shop owners and make them even less hospitable —especially at busier times of the year like Christmas. On both sides, simple courtesy has gone by the board. And for a multitude of consumers, service went with it.
The Better Business Bureau at Vancouver gets 250 complaints a week, twice as many as five years ago. The bureau then had one complaints counselor and now has four. People complain about being insulted, having their intelligence and integrity questioned, and being threatened. One will hear about people being hauled almost bodily out the door by somebody saying things like “I don't have to serve you!” or “This is private property, get out and don't come back! ” What can customers do? If the bureau's arbitration process fails to settle a dispute, a customer's only recourse is to sue in claims court. But because of the costs and time it takes, relatively few ever do.
There is a lot of support for the notion that service has, in part, fallen victim to generational change. Many young people regard retailing as just a bead-end job that you're just going to do temporarily on your way to a real job. Young clerks often lack both knowledge and civility. Employers have to train young people in simple manners because that is not being done at home. Salespeople today, especially the younger ones, have grown up in a television-computer society where they've interacted largely with machines. One of the biggest complaints from businesses about graduates is the lack of inter-personal skills.
What customers really want is access. They want to get through when they call, they don't want busy signals, they don't want interactive systems telling them to push one for this and two for that —they don't want voice mail. And if customers do not get what they want, they defect. Some people go back to local small businesses: the Asian greengrocer, a Greek baker and a Greek fishmonger. They don't wear name tags, but one gets to know them, all by name.
67. At a business place of bad service, the worst one can get is .
A. indifference and rudeness
B. naked hostility and physical violence
C. having intelligence and integrity questioned
D. being insulted and threatened
68. One of the reasons for such ill feeling in the marketplace is that .
A. shoppers are usually strident, frustrated and impatient
B. shoppers often take businesses to court
C. businesses try every means to get customers
D. businesses use new technology instead of employees
69. What changes have taken place at Vancouver Better Service Bureau in the past five years?
A. More effective.
B. Less bureaucracy.
C. More business.
D. Better staff.
70. Young clerks often lack interpersonal skills chiefly because they .
A. are skilled in dealing with machines, not people
B. are not trained in simple manners at home
C. fall victims to generational change
D. take retailing to be a temporary job

第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题,每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填1个单词。
America has long been a heaven for immigrants from around the world. Until the 19th century, the majority of immigrants were from northern Europe. By the mid-20th century, they were coming from all over the world. In recent years, scores of refugees (难民) from Southeast Asia and Latin America have fled to American shores to find a place where human rights are respected.
The American idea of respecting human rights came from several sources. First, the colonists had been treated in a cruel way. They realized that people’s rights must be preserved. Moreover, the Bible and ancient Greek and Roman literature taught that people are born with equal rights. English writer John Locke emphasized that governments should protect these rights. As a result, the Declaration of Independence reflected the belief that God created all people equal. The US Constitution included 10 changes to guarantee the basic rights of citizens. This Bill of Rights promised freedom of religion, freedom of speech and of the press, the right to bear arms and the right to a fair trial.
Throughout American history, the belief in individual human rights has influenced government policies and laws. Slavery opponents argued that even slaves had rights as human beings. Finally, after the Civil War, slavery became illegal. Even today, US trade relations with other countries depend on whether they have a positive human rights record.
Human rights have become a global concern. The United Nations was established in 1945 with a belief in the basic human rights of all people. Three years later, the UN adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document stated that“all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights”.
Most nations in the world today would agree that human beings have basic rights. Of course, different countries have different attitudes towards the issue. But to Americans, no matter how you define the issue, people deserve to be treated like people.

When Sam first got to his boarding school with his parents, he was very happy. He thought he would be able to go home every weekend. When he was told he would not, he started crying because the thought of not seeing his parents was driving him crazy.
He was given uniforms and all other things that he would need for the term. He started crying when it was time for his parents to leave. He was then taken to the dorm, where he saw other children happy. He tried as much as he could to fit in but could not because his mind was at home. He started feeling homesick and wanted to go home as soon as possible.
He got sick soon because he could not eat the school food. He could not concentrate in the classroom. All he could think was being at home with his family. He had no mobile phone or other means to get in touch with his parents. He was angry and felt lonely. He thought his parents hated him and that was why they left him in a boarding school.

The story is about what Sam felt about his first boarding school life. As a child, he never left his parents, so he didn’t get used to dealing with everything in school independently.
Once I had a similar experience. I finished my junior middle school in a boarding school. At the age of 13, I never dealt with the daily things, such as washing clothes, taking care of money etc. especially I felt lonely because I hardly knew any people. At first, I could not get on well with my classmates and I always looked forward to being on holiday to meet my parents. I could not concentrate on my subjects. As time went by, I gradually adapted myself to the school life. I made several friends with our classmates and often took part in the activities, in which I improved my communicating skills. As I had a lot of interesting things to do, I finally enjoyed my school life.
Now, whenever I think of my first boarding school life, I think it instructive and unforgettable.
