Besides, poems usually follow certain patterns.
For example, in this poem the first line and the last line have three word. The second line and the third line have four words.

Match and complete the format of a five line poem.

Read the text again and answer the questions.
1. What are five-line poems about
They are always about a single topic.
2. What can we write in the first line
We can write a noun to state the topic of the poem.
3. What can we write in the other lines
3. What can we write in the other lines
We use a noun and an adjective or two adjectives to describe the topic in the second line.
We choose three words to describe what the topic does in the third line.
We choose four words to express a thought or a feeling about the topic in the fourth line.We can use any type of words here.
We use one word to say something about the topic in the last line.
1.It has five lines of text.正文有五行。
text 在本句中的意思是“正文”。
eg:I looked through the full text of the agreement.
我通读了那份协议的全文。

text还有“课文;教科书,课本”的意思
eg:The text of Lesson Three is easy to learn.
第三课的课文好学。
2. This style was created in the nineteenth century by an American poet.
这种诗歌形式是由一位美国诗人在19世纪创立的。
in the nineteenth century 在19世纪
表示“在几世纪”时, 用“in+the+序数词+century”。也可写作in the 1900s/ in the 1900's, 相当于during the nineteenth century
eg:We live in the twenty first century. 我们生活在21世纪。
[拓展] 表示“......世纪......年代”用“in the 基数词加s 或's”的形式
eg:in the 1980s = in the 1980’s 在20世纪80年代
3. This kind of poem always talks about a singe topic.
这类诗总是谈论一个单一的主题。
如果主语是由“限定词+kind/type/sort of+名词”构成, 谓语动词用单数形式。
eg:There is a kind of rose, which fills the air with fragrance when May comes. 有一种玫瑰, 进入五月就让空气中充满香味。
如果主语是由“限定词+kinds/types/sorts of+名词”构成, 谓语动词用复数形式。
eg:There are several sorts of cheese for sale in the shop.
商店里在出售几种奶酪。
I have met all kinds of tourists who come from Europe.
我遇到过来自欧洲的各种各样的游客。
4. Each line has a set number of words.
每一行都有固定数量的单词。
a set number of 意思是“固定(规定)数量的”, 。
a number of 意思是“许多的; 一些”。
eg:A number of workers are needed in this project.
这项工程需要很多工人。
[辨析] “number ”的不同用法
the number of ......的数量 后加可数名词复数, 谓语动词用单数 A number of friends came to his birthday party. 许多朋友都参加了他的生日聚会。
a number of 许多; 大量的 后加可数名词复数, 谓语用复数 The number of them was over eighty.其人数超过了八十。
5.Let's look at another two poems as examples.
我们再拿两首诗为例。
another two poems 的意思是“另外两首诗”
eg:May I make another one point 我可以谈一点吗?
[拓展] 表示“另外......个”还可以用 “基数词+more+名词”
eg:We need five more chairs. 我们还需要另外五把椅子。
[注意] 当基数词大于一时, 名词需要加“s”
eg:another three books = three more books
6. Here is how you can write your own five-line poem.
下面是你自己写五行诗的方法。
own 意思是“自己的; 属于自己的”, 用在形容词性物主代词后面加强语气。
eg:This is my own bike. 这是我自己的自行车。
He will insist on his own view. 他要坚持自己的观点。
of one's own “某人自己的”
eg:This is a book of my own. 这是我自己的书。
on one's own “独自地, 单独地”
eg:She lives on her own. 她独自过日子.
eg:It's a five minute walk from the library to the playground.从图书馆到操场需要走五分钟。
five line “五行的”, 复合形容词, 由“数词+连字符
+单数名词”构成
复合形容词, 在句子作定语, 修饰后面的名词
“数词+连字符+单位词(单数)+连字符+形容词”。
eg:three meter deep 三米深的
“形容词+连字符+名词 ed”。
eg:warm hearted 热心肠的

7. In one word, state the topic of your poem.
用一个词说明诗歌的主题。
in one word 在本句中的意思是“用一个词”
in one/a word还可以用作固定短语, 意思是“总之, 简言之, 一句话”。
eg:He is clever, kind, and honest. In one/a word, he is a man worth trusting. 他聪明、善良、诚实。总之, 他是个值得信赖的人。
in表示“用语言”;
eg:Write the letter in English. 请你用英语写信。
with表示“用工具、手段、材料等”;
eg:He caught the ball with his right hand. 他用右手接住了球。
on表示“用原料”;
Cars run on electricity. 汽车靠电力运行。
by表示“用手段、方式等”。
We can learn English by watching movies. 我们可以通过看电影的方式学习英语。
