These are all fairy tales.

A fairy tale is a story that often has characters like fairies, dwarfs, giants or mermaids.
This fairy tale is adapted from The Selfish Giant by Oscar Wilde. He was one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s.

1. Once upon a time, there was a large, lovely garden.
从前, 有一个美丽的大花园。
once upon a time 意思是“从前;很久以前”, 这是讲故事常用的开头语。类似的表达还有long, long ago, a long time ago等。
eg:Long long ago, there is a tiger named Huniu.
很久以前, 有一个叫虎妞的老虎。
Language Points
2. The giant cried in a loud voice.巨人大声地喊。
in a loud voice 意思是“大声地”;
in a low voice 意思是“低声地”。
eg:Please read the story in a loud voice, so that all of the students can hear you clearly.
请大声听读这个故事, 让所有的同学都能清楚地听见。
[拓展] 声音、价钱和速度论高低, 人口数字论大小。
eg: at a high speed at a low price
3. They ran away and dared not come back.
他们逃走了,不敢再回来。
run away 意思是“逃跑, 走掉; 逃脱”。
eg:The thief had run away when the policemen came.
警察来时小偷已经跑了。
There is a hole in my washbasin, and the water is running away. 我的脸盆上有一个洞, 水都流走了。
4. The next day,the giant built a high wall around his garden and put a notice on a board: DO NOT ENTER!第二天,巨人围着他的花园垒了一圈高墙,而且在一块木板上写了一条通告:勿进!
the next day 表(过去或将来的)“第二天”
eg:They arrived in Beijing on Saturday, and left for Shanghai the next Saturday. 他们星期六到达北京, 而下一个星期六又动身去了上海。
[注意]表示现在开始的“第二天” 用 “next day”
5.The poor children no longer had a place to play.
可怜的孩子们不再有玩的地方了。
no longer = not any longer “不再”, 表示动作、状态等不再延续, 强调时间。
eg:You are no longer a child.你不再是个孩子了。
no more = not…any more “不再”, 表示动作、状态等不再重复出现,强调次数。
eg:The baby didn't cry any more.这个婴儿不再哭了。
6.When spring came, flowers blossomed and the birds began to sing across the land.
春天到了, 花儿开了, 鸟儿鸣叫着飞过大地。
across “穿过”, 强调从某个平面的一边到另一边
eg:The girls walked across the square, singing happily.
那些女孩子快乐地唱着歌穿过广场。
across 也可以表示“横过”
eg:A bridge was built across the river last year. 去年这条河上建了一座桥。
across 还可以表示“在对面”
eg:He once lived across the road. 他曾在这条路对面居住过。
across 介词, “穿过” 强调从某个平面的一边到另一边 The boy can swim across the river.那个小男孩能游过那条河。
cross 动词, “穿过” 强调从某个平面的一边到另一边 Look left and right before you cross the street.过马路前要左右看。
through 介词, “穿过” 指从某个立体空间内穿过 He walked through the forest.他走过森林。
