1.Fill the dish half full with water.倒半碟水。
half full with water 是形容词短语, 在句中作状语, 表伴随状态。
Language Points
half 形容词, 意为“一半的”
half an/a +名词, 意为“半个……”
eg:half an hour 半个小时
half of… 意为“一半的……”, 后接名词时, 一般要在名词前加the、形容词性物主代词或指示代词等。此结构作主语时谓语动词和of后的名词保持一致。
eg:Half of the books are about science. 一半的书是关于科学的。
Half of the bag is empty. 袋子空了一半。
2.When the candle stops burning, it has used up all the oxygen in the air. 当蜡烛停止燃烧时,它已经耗光了空气中的氧气。
stops burning “停止燃烧” stop doing sth. “停止正在做的事”
eg:Stop talking, please.请停止说话。

use up = run out of “用尽; 耗光”, 动副词短语。
eg:He has used up all his energy. 他已筋疲力尽。

take up 开始从事;占据;接受 The computer takes up so much room.电脑占据了太多空间。
cut up 切碎 Cut up the vegetable.把蔬菜切碎。
give up 放弃 Don’t give up and you will succeed.

3. How far does the water rise 水面上升了多少?
far 在本句中表示“深(的程度)”

4. Because about one fifth of the air is made up of oxygen, the water rises and fills about one fifth of the jar. 因为空气的五分之一是由氧气组成的,所以水会上升到瓶子五分之一的位置。
be made up of 意思是“用·······构成或组成的”
eg: I want my staff to be made up of excellent workers.我希望我的员工都非常出色。

one fifth “五分之一” 分数的表达形式:分子用基数词, 分母用序数词, 当分子大于1时, 分母加 “s”
